The Perth Summer Racing Carnival at Ascot continues this Saturday, headlined by the Group l Winterbottom Stakes (1200m). The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out four metres for the entire circuit.

Race 1. (15:24) TOURISM WA TROPHY 1500m
Have to give 4 Western Temple (Bet Now: $3.20) another chance. This Adam Durrant trained gelding was a beaten odds on pop three weeks ago when near the speed and chasing the speed, which left him without many petrol tickets left for the straight when third to Abdicator. Think the depth here isn’t as strong, Pike remains on…he’ll do me, but would want $2.5+ before entertaining him as a bet.
2 Cockney Crew (Bet Now: $3.40) is the very interesting runner. Talented animal for Kieran McDonagh who hasn’t raced for six weeks since winning impressively over 1800m here. That was to be his last run leading into the Railway last Saturday but wasn’t 100% the days leading in and was scratched. May want further and the run under the belt, but has class.
1 Abdicator (Bet Now: $4.50) landed some bets at odds when winning the race mentioned above. He got into a lovely spot from the barrier under Azzopardi and when asked for the big effort, responded very well and finished best to win. Creeping up in the weights now, so hard to see him maintaining a margin over Western Temple, but has the win next to his name.
Race 2. (16:04) MRS MAC'S PLATE 1000m
In the corner of 4 Levitate (Bet Now: $3.30) for the Simon Miller team. Mighty effort on debut at Belmont over 1200m after missing the start and was forced to race wide throughout, running a very game second. Freshened up and ran over 1200m at Bunbury where he led all the way and proved far too good for his rivals. Don’t mind him back to 1000m, lands on speed and will be tough to get past I dare say.
2 Downforce (Bet Now: $3.10) is on the seven day back up for the Neville Parnham stable after racing at this track/distance last Saturday when sitting off the speed before being presented wider on the turn and finishing off strongly to nail Miss Tycoon right on the peg. Back to his own age now and from the inside gate, Parnham has a few options. He’s hard to beat against this lot.
1 Mia Dolce (Bet Now: $16.00) is three weeks between runs since racing at this track/distance when on speed and copping pressure, giving a kick for a few strides but couldn’t match with them late when sixth to Massimo, who franked that form by winning the Placid Ark last Saturday. The depth here is nowhere near as strong and her best is good enough to give this a shake at decent odds.
Race 3. (16:44) AMELIA PARK HANDICAP 1100m
2 Fire And Rain (Bet Now: $6.50) is a talented four year old for Paul Jordan that is first up, having not raced since Australia Day when leading all the way over 1200m here in a 3YO handicap, running good time from the front in a smart performance. Been given a good break but loved the way he went in a recent Belmont trial win when not really asked for an effort and winning in good time. Hard to beat.
8 Rebel Knight (Bet Now: $3.70) is a son of Universal Ruler that was hard in the market when resuming over 1000m here two weeks ago when just off the speed and presented to win at the top of the straight but had no answers for the finale produced by Undisclosed, who is a sharp short course sprinter with good change up speed. Has the run under the belt now and up to 1100m appeals.
7 The Nicconian (Bet Now: $4.80) is a Neville Parnham trained gelding that had trialled up pretty well prior to resuming over 1000m here a fortnight ago and I thought his run had plenty of merit to it given he did a little bit of work in the run from a wide barrier and stuck to the task gamely when third to Undisclosed. Draws barrier one so gets a very economical run and prove hard to beat.
Race 4. (17:24) FURPHY HANDICAP 1800m
Back in trip isn’t ideal for 10 British Bessy (Bet Now: $5.00) but she’s a really handy mare who tries had every time she steps out and she’ll be strong at the end. Ran over 2150m here last time out when just off the speed before being presented on the turn with full momentum and held a safe margin to the line in an impressive win. Back in trip is the knock with her, plus a tricky gate, but she’ll be strong late compared to others who are suspect.
7 Sophie’s Song (Bet Now: $9.50) is a Simon Miller trained mare who is racing really well this time in but is yet to win and is just starting to become costly for punters. This mare ran over the mile here two weeks ago when on speed and trying hard but had no answers late for the finale produced by Sublime Image, a Team Williams trained galloper is in ripping form. First look at this kind of trip, but has the right racing pattern.
I think up to 1800m will suit 8 Son Of Bacchus (Bet Now: $12.00), who comes through the Sublime Image race from two weeks ago where he did a bit of work in the run from a tricky gate and tried hard but couldn’t finish it off when running third. Think a step up in distance will be ideal for this four year old and he did run well at a staying trip as a three year old last season. Hard to beat.
Race 5. (17:59) MAGIC MILLIONS-TATTERSALL'S CUP 2100m
If we can get each way odds about 6 Friar Fox (Bet Now: $7.00), I’ll be keen to bet up. This girl looks to be flying. Comes through the Ascot Gold Cup and I think you can make a case that she should have won. Parnham tried to hold the back of Forceful but couldn’t and that cost her in the end I think. Like her up to 2100m and with better luck this time around, she can win this for sure.7
4 Forceful (Bet Now: $1.95) is a little query at 2100m but hard to ignore the thought process of the stable. He comes through the Ascot Gold Cup from two weeks ago where I thought Pike gave him every chance just off the speed and was there to win but couldn’t hold out Taxagano in a thrilling finish. I think with a more conservative steer, the 2100m should be fine.
Back up in trip does look a good recipe for 7 Brother’s Keeper (Bet Now: $19.00), who was back in trip when racing over 1800m here last Saturday in a race not really suited for him and he just didn’t have the speed in the legs behind Harry Thomas. This looks more his go I feel and despite the class/depth rise, he’s a must for exotics.
Race 6. (18:35) WESTSPEED PLATINUM SERIES FINAL 1400m
The query is that 3 Not To Be Mist (Bet Now: $3.80) may want a touch further, but ability wise, I think he’s the best in the race. Ran over this track/distance two weeks ago when back in the run before Pike weaved his magic wand and he got the gaps at the right time and burst through to score a big win. Draws to get clear air from the outset and will be strong late.
1 Sir Mambo (Bet Now: $9.50) is a ripper for Martin Allan who despite the big weight and wide gate, is likeable. He ran over this track/distance a fortnight ago when near the speed and fighting on pretty well in defeat when fourth to Royal Command. He’s been up a while but continues to race well and if he can luck from the gate, he’s hard to beat.
I think the weight relief will really help the Dion Luciani trained 14 Bee Quick (Bet Now: $12.00), who lumped 58.5kg in a Class One at this track/distance two weeks back when near the speed and trying hard when midfield behind Mr Kunafa. I think the 58.5kg just bogged her down late so down in the weights this time around, she can bounce back.
Race 7. (19:10) COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL 1200m
Good little test for 1 Mr Genoa (Bet Now: $2.60) but I think he can take this out despite the weight. Luke Fernie has had this horse for three runs and has won all three, all of which have come on the home track at Kalgoorlie. The latest came four weeks ago over 1200m when finishing best from off the pace. The two big ticks for this guy are barrier one and Pike taking the ride.
2 M’Lady (Bet Now: $5.50) is a proven city performer and is flying this time in for Sarah Childs, who has had the mare for three runs, all three coming on her home track at Geraldton, the latest win seeing her produce an impressive win at this trip via sustained speed despite drawing tricky. Tricky once again, but has great early toe and will look the winner.
3 Read The Riot Act (Bet Now: $7.00) is a Roy Rogers trained gelding that is going really well I feel. If this was 1400m, I’d declare him. Ran over 1230m at Albany last start when back off the pace and working home strongly to run fourth to Wild Fusion. Should get a lovely run off a good speed and he will be strong at the end.
Race 8. (19:50) WINTERBOTTOM STAKES 1200m
I think with the barrier draw and a strong tempo on the cards, the race just sets up perfectly for 1 Trekking (Bet Now: $2.70). This bloke brings the A1 form into this having placed in the Everest, the highest rating sprint race in the world. He then went to the Redzel and clocked brilliant late splits behind Pierata. That’s A1 sprint form and just has to bring that here to greet the judge.
10 Vital Silver (Bet Now: $9.00) is one of a couple at decent odds. He was close up behind Sunlight down the Flemington straight in the Gilgai fresh before going to the Manikato where he ran the race of his life, running second to loving Gaby after looking the winner for a few strides. Back home, been primed for this race, Melham on, I think he will only run well.
Trekking is the one to beat on form, but at the odds, 9 Endless Drama (Bet Now: $23.00) is the each way bet in the race. Tony Pike has had this as a target for this guy since his last start flop back home in NZ. All he wanted was an inside gate and he’s got the perfect barrier to use. Has form around Te Akau Shark and Melody Belle and we saw how effective that was during the Spring.
Race 9. (20:40) CROWN TOWERS HANDICAP 1200m
1 Heart Of Coeur (Bet Now: $4.00) is a progressive gelding for the Martin Allan team who comes here in really good form after bolting up here last Wednesday at this track/distance when coming back in trip and producing a brilliant finale from off the speed to get the job done and win comfortably in reasonable time. Harder here, but a repeat effort of last start and he’s going to take some beating here.
2 Stormy Ruler (Bet Now: $10.00) is a Michael Lane trained gelding who has been very good at the provincials in recent times but yet to really prove himself in town so he gets a good chance here. He won last time out at Albany and though he didn’t beat much, he was impressive on a day where those on speed were advantaged. Stable rarely gets it wrong when bringing them to town so he gets respect.
3 Argent D’Or (Bet Now: $41.00) is a very interesting runner. Former Steve O’Dea galloper that is making his WA debut for the Fred Kersley stable. Before O’Dea, he was with Joe Pride in Sydney and had run some pretty good races in town without winning. Interesting he resumes here without a trial, but he’s in the right yard to do something fresh, so I reckon watch the market.
