New Years Day Racing in Sydney heads to the Kensington track at Randwick for an eight race card. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out five metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (13:35) PRESS STATEMENT @ VINERY HCP 1100m
5 Parakeet (Bet Now: $3.10 TOP ODDS) on top for me. Daughter of Kermadec for James Cummings that is on debut off the back of two trials. Really liked her first trial at Hawkesbury before contesting a 1000m trial at Randwick where she was pushed out but responded well behind impressive trial winner Nuclear. Has had the right grounding for this and stable is starting to hum along with their juveniles.
4 Jemss (Bet Now: $5.00 TOP ODDS) looks a progressive filly for David Payne who is coming back to 1100m after debuting over 1200m at Randwick where they really ran along in front, which ensured she was out the back and chasing, but picked up and was good late when fourth to impressive winner Aim. Back to 1100m is the knock, but shouldn’t be as far back this time around.
Interested to see how 2 Ashra Jahre (Bet Now: $9.50 TOP ODDS) goes. Mark Newnham trains this filly, who is first up, having not raced since her debut in the Gimcrack where she was wide no cover for the trip and dropped out behind stablemate Every Rose. Two trials leading in have been solid enough and she does have the race experience on her side.
Race 2. (14:10) SKY RACING ACTIVE HCP 1550m
Having a throw at the stumps each way in the shape of 4 Celtic Love (Bet Now: $9.50 TOP ODDS). She resumed over 1200m at Randwick, a distance clearly short of her best, and while she ran last to Seasons, she was only beaten four lengths and ran the best late splits of the race. Love her up to 1550m and this is borderline a provincial class race, not a race that has Stakes class mares engaged compared to last start.
5 To Your Health (Bet Now: $4.00 TOP ODDS) comes through the right form races and is racing well. Just not winning and her winning strike rate is a concern. In saying that, this is easily the weakest race she has contested in some time. Attempted to lead all the way at Randwick last time and kicked strongly, only going down very late when fourth to Asharani. Can win, but couldn’t take shortish odds for her.
Very interesting that 2 Whiskey Shooter(Bet Now: $7.00 TOP ODDS) backs up from Friday where she contested the Belle Of The Turf at Gosford. She was part of a mad speed battle with Toryjoy and both brought each other undone by going way too hard. Stable wouldn’t back her up unless she’s come through that gut buster well. At her best, can win.
Race 3. (14:45) DRINKWISE PLATE 1400m
Going the way of the Anthony Cummings trained filly 8 Strange Charm (Bet Now: $13.00 TOP ODDS), who resumed over 1100m at Gosford and felt the pinch late when fifth to Phoenix River in what has turned out to be a pretty good form race and that event was run in fast time. She was chasing that speed and knocked up late given she had just one soft trial leading in. Has since had a 1000m trial win, so she’s tuned up to go and gets Nash from gate one.
Can 2 Mars (Bet Now: $4.80 TOP ODDS) repeat his last run? Did nothing on debut at Canterbury, which ensured he started $101 here last start and despite sitting wide no cover for the trip, he kept coming and was really good in defeat when second to Electric Girl in fast time relative to the meeting. Repeats that here and he should go close.
4 Nyami (Bet Now: $7.50 TOP ODDS) is a Charm Spirit gelding for Chris Waller who was kept pretty safe in betting when debuting over 1250m at Canterbury and just lacked the change up speed to go with them late but stuck on and was pretty good in defeat behind Hellbenders. Runner up was Battleground and he went close to winning the Gosford Guineas, so that clearly reads well for this.
Race 4. (15:20) SCHWEPPES HCP 1250m
I think back in overall depth and back on a favourable track sees me in the corner of 1 Mansa Musa (Bet Now: $4.80 TOP ODDS). Attempted to lead all the way over 1100m at Randwick just under three weeks ago but did too much work on speed and tired late behind Superium, with that form being ticked off last Saturday. He should find the front here and prove very hard to run down.
3 Knowitall Jack (Bet Now: $4.20 TOP ODDS) is a son of Pierro for Mark Newnham that resumes. This gelding hasn’t raced since August 28 over the Warwick Farm mile where he was at the end of a decent prep and just looked a tired horse when down the track behind Stryke Rock. Been given a good break and his two trials leading in have been encouraging to the eye.
5 Crafty Tycoon (Bet Now: $10.00 TOP ODDS) is a David Pfieffer trained gelding who finished down the track here first up behind Mansa Musa but his next two runs have come through red hot form races, firstly at Warwick Farm behind Embracer before going to Kembla and working home well behind Adelong. Both of those horses have won in town since, so it reads very well for this.
Race 5. (16:00) BOWERMANS OFFICE FURNITURE HCP 1800m
5 Killer Instinct (Bet Now: $3.20) looks one of the better bets on the card. John O’Shea trains this progressive middle distance horse, who ran over 1550m here last time when back off a slow speed and really had no chance but had to like the way he worked home when fourth to Invinciano, beaten just under three lengths. Up to 1800m is a big tick and should take some beating.
9 Switching To Win (Bet Now: $21.00) is a son of Frankel for Team Snowden that was enormous in defeat first up at Canberra over the mile given he was wide no cover for the trip, back near last, yet still ran on and found the line well, just missing out on the placing when fourth to Giocoso. Clearly harder here, but that resumption was very encouraging and up to 1800m clearly a big tick.
6 Birth Of Venus (Bet Now: $20.00) is a Chris Waller trained mare that hadn’t done a great deal in two trials before resuming under the lights at Canterbury where she was back near last on a night where on speed was the spot to be. Didn’t mind her finale behind Reflectivity. May need one more run, but she does find a very winnable race here.
Race 6. (16:40) GRUNT @ YULONG AUSTRALIA HCP 1000m
Really keen to see 4 King’s Champ (Bet Now: $7.00) return for Gerald Ryan. Returns as a gelding, where he showed good promise as a 2YO, but as a colt, he was doing plenty wrong. Had a trial in October and was impressive. Freshened up and ran in a trial a couple of weeks ago and loved the way he closed off from the back in fast time. Luck from the gate is needed, but if he gets it, he finishes over the top.
5 North (Bet Now: $5.50) is a son of Deep Field for the Snowden camp that was well supported when resuming over 1000m at Wyong and loomed to win, looking the winner for a few strides, but Invincible Kiss had the suck run behind the speed and got the split, dashing too good late for North. Fitter now is North and should take some beating.
Good little test for 2 Kiss My Swiss (Bet Now: $11.00). Joe Cleary has placed her beautifully in the country but she has to come to town now given her rating. Her jump and run racing pattern will win her more races than lose them, which is a great asset to have and with the claim for Chris Williams, she does get in pretty well and will give them something to chase.
Race 7. (17:20) TERRITORIES YEARLINGS @ SALES HCP 1400m
I can smell a stable first up assault with 9 Blast (Bet Now: $16.00), resuming for Anthony Cummings. This bloke hasn’t raced since May 29 when down the track at Warwick Farm behind Statuesquely. Form around him from the Autumn does read very well. Has had three trials this prep. First two were without blinkers and he went like a hack but they went on in the latest trial and loved the way he went in a good trial. Sits off a good speed and if he gets luck, he can win.
3 Voila (Bet Now: $3.90) straight to 1400m looks a little query but I think Chris Waller has her going well. Ran over 1150m here last time out where Bowman gave her a sweet steer just off the speed and loomed large to win, hitting the front in the straight but was nabbed late. Think a rise in trip will suit…but 1400m? Not sure, but have to wait and see.
1 Subban (Bet Now: $27.00) is better suited over a bit further but I think he can run well here fresh. Bryce Heys trains this stayer, who hasn’t raced since June 8 over 2400m at Randwick where the track was bottomless and he couldn’t pick his feet up at all behind Fanciful Toff, who at the time was flying. Better suited at 2000m/thereabouts, but like him at 1400m first up.
Race 8. (17:55) TAB VENUE MODE HCP 1500m
2 Snips (Bet Now: $4.20) will do me here. David Pfieffer trains this gelding, who was a few weeks between runs when racing over 1400m and was a little unlucky to the eye, but considering the winner Rocha Clock bombed the start by five and still won, hard to make excuses for those in behind. Fitter and up to 1550m, he looks one of the hardest to beat.
7 Zouologist (Bet Now: $3.40) is a Chris Waller trained galloper that was enormous over 1400m here behind Rocha Clock given he was wide no cover throughout and gave the perfect drag up to the eventual winner, but he toughed it out and stuck to the task really gamely in defeat. Off that, 1550m should be fine for him and finds a winnable race.
5 Dalmatia Prince (Bet Now: $8.00) is worth a look here for Todd Howlett. He resumed at the midweeks at Rosehill over 1300m and liked the way he found the line late in the race when third to a progressive galloper in Excellent Proposal. You’d like to think the extra 250m will suit this gelding and though his second up record isn’t flash, hard to ignore the resumption.
