Nine races will be run and won at Doomben this Saturday. The weather is fine, the track is soft (5) and the rail is out half a metre for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (11:47) Gadens Handicap (85) 2000m
Any sign of improvement from the resumption and 7 Lord Gododdin (Bet Now: $7.50) should be taking this out. Was keen on him running well fresh at the Sunny Coast and for a few strides he looked the winner. His condition just gave out late and was beaten by a hard fit/in form Picka Plum. Fitter and up to 2000m, I’m really keen on this Waller stayer running well.
Up in trip with weight relief will suit 5 Galtero (Bet Now: $2.70). Just think 1800m with a big weight found him out at the Gold Coast (Metro) a few weeks back. Looked to get into a decent enough spot but just couldn’t finish the race off behind Polemic, a horse he had covered the start prior when winning, so I think the set up here is better and he did win impressively the start prior.
It’s an interesting race plan with 2 Outraged (Bet Now: $10.00). Got the bikkies for us two back at the Gold Coast (Metro) before stepping back to the mile last Saturday, a trip short of his best, but found the line well enough and his late splits weren’t too bad. Much better suited at a staying trip and a repeat of his win at the Gold Coast will see him hard to beat against this lot.
Race 2. (12:22) Spicers Retreat Handicap (0MW) 1600m
Third up from a spell and up to the mile, happy to be in the corner of 8 Highway (Bet Now: $6.00). This mare was very good from the back fresh behind Sienna Rose over 1400m at Eagle Farm before racing at the same track/distance when again getting back and finding the line well. Racing as if extra ground will suit, which is what she gets here, and looks one of the hardest to beat.
1 Ready For Danger (Bet Now: $7.00) is gradually getting to peak fitness for Matty Dunn and looks a key chance here despite the wide gate. He comes through the Murwillumbah Cup where he chased strongly against the track pattern for the day and got close to beating Boncosta in an excellent effort. The gate will likely ensure he gets back to last, but if he can get a drag up into the race, he’ll be dangerous.
Bryan Dais looks to have 11 Rossmay (Bet Now: $13.00) flying. Loved her win fresh at the Sunny Coast before a good fifth to Sienna Rose at Eagle Farm. The stable then sent her to Rosehill and I thought she handled herself quite well when a closing third to Wimlah. That wasn’t the strongest Saturday race in Sydney, but much stronger than this, so on that basis, has to be rated as a leading chance.
Race 3. (12:58) Herron Todd White Handicap (Class 6) 1350m
9 Francisca (Bet Now: $4.80) hasn’t won in over a year but I’ll be in her corner here. Late market push said she’d need the run fresh at Eagle Farm two weeks ago and that’s how it panned out when back and closing off okay without really threatening behind Veranes. Has a really good second up record and for mine is much better suited at 1350m. Hard to trust, but giving her a chance, perhaps last chance.
6 Smug Satisfaction (Bet Now: $3.80) is yet to do the seven day back up but hard to ignore what she did last Saturday at Eagle Farm. Fradd gave her a peach steer just off the speed before angling wider and it was just a matter of pushing the button, which he did and the mare bolted up. Bit more depth here, but Michael Costa looks to have this mare absolutely flying.
2 Barefoot (Bet Now: $5.00) is a talented mare for the Sears camp that resumes. This girl is having her first run as a 4YO, having contested some good races right throughout the Autumn/Winter, highlighted by a close up fourth in the Magic Millions Guineas. Resumes without a trial, but 1350m fresh tells me she’s forward enough to run well and does have class.
Race 4. (13:33) Kestrel Solutions Plate (Class 3) 1200m
Said it was D-Day for Sienna Rose a few weeks back and she won. It’s D-Day this Saturday for 4 Macewen (Bet Now: $3.20). Just missed out on the win at Doomben first up before racing at Eagle Farm a few weeks ago and I thought he was very disappointing behind The Tenor after getting a decent enough run off the speed but in saying that, Ditmas did control things and walked mid race. Hopefully a genuine tempo this time around, he gets clear air and finishes over the top.
1 Fuji Flyer (Bet Now: $3.00) is 2/2 this time in for Gillian Heinrich and the way he’s going, he deserves a crack at Saturday grade. Somewhat lucky to win fresh given how unlucky subsequent Eagle Farm winner Smug Satisfaction, but he proved it was no fluke last start with a dominant win after sitting near the speed. Confident he can run well against this lot.
What to do with 6 The Fire Trap (Bet Now: $5.00). Matty Dunn was really bullish on this horse being a Magic Millions Guineas horse last Summer but the then three year old just didn’t measure up at all and for the most part was disappointing. Then raced at Eagle Farm and didn’t have much luck behind Chapter And Verse. Been given a good break and he has trialled well leading in.
Race 5. (14:08) Vae Group Handicap 1050m
Can’t get away from 1 Single Bullet (Bet Now: $7.50). The race just panned out perfectly for him two weeks ago at Eagle Farm, sitting off a fast speed on dry ground and unleashed his customary turn of foot to get the done impressively and on the line rather softly. Looks to be a stack of speed engaged here and he’ll get dry ground again, so have to give him a serious chance again.
3 Meet Mr Taylor (Bet Now: $1.70) does look hard to beat. He is a noted on speed sprinter for Kelly Schweida, but he can take a sit if need be, as we saw three back on a bog track when outside the leader before putting them away and gapping his rivals. Took a sit in the trial on Tuesday and loved the way he closed off under a hold. If he leads and gets a cheap furlong, game over. Still hard to beat if he takes cover.
A horse who can sit off the good speed is 8 Another Whiskey (Bet Now: $41.00), who hasn’t won in a little while, but on his day is an honest animal. He comes through the Single Bullet race from two weeks ago at Eagle Farm where he got back off the speed and tried hard but couldn’t quite finish it off when sixth to the Gary Portelli runner, beaten three lengths. Good record at Doomben so an improved showing wouldn’t shock.
Race 6. (14:43) Rostron Carlyle Rojas Plate (Class 3) 1200m
She may want a bit further, but I’m in the corner of 3 Drumadoir (Bet Now: $12.00). This mare was unwanted in betting when resuming over 1200m at Eagle Farm two weeks ago but I really liked the way she found the line late after getting well back in the run, finishing fifth to Veranes. May want 1400m, perhaps a mile, but there looks to be good speed here, so she’ll get her chance.
Not sure what to make of 15 Veranes (Bet Now: $5.00). Thought she had every chance at the Gold Coast (Metro) two starts ago before backing up a week later at Eagle Farm and under a lovely ride from Robbie Fradd, the mare finished best in a tight go to get the win. Consistency has been her downfall throughout her career, but there does look to be a bit of it this time in.
14 She Za Boss (Bet Now: $15.00) could be a sneaky chance at odds. This Liam Birchley trained mare gapped them to win two back at the Sunny Coast, beating recent impressive winner Doom. Then went to Ipswich where she was heavily backed but had no luck in the run, sitting wide throughout in a total forgive. Should be able to slot in from the gate this time around and is $15+. Crazy considering she was even money last time.
Race 7. (15:22) JLL Handicap 1110m
6 Written With Ease (Bet Now: $6.50) for me. Stuart Kendrick trains this filly, who contested some decent races during the Winter Carnival and was far from disgraced. Dropped back in grade, bolted up and was spelled soon after. Her trial win a couple of weeks back at the Sunny Coast was outstanding and the form out of that has been good. Have to be with her here.
Great to see 3 Gem Of Scotland (Bet Now: $3.30) back at the races. Rex Lipp done a fab job with her during the Autumn/Winter, winning several races and measured up at blacktype company before being spelled. She does seem a filly who doesn’t need much work to get ready and she did run very well with fresh legs last prep. One of the hardest to beat for sure.
If there’s one going around at silly odds, it is 4 Magic Trick (Bet Now: $12.00) for the Sears stable. Started decent odds when winning here two back before going to Ipswich where he started longer odds but under a lovely ride from Michael Cahill, he was too good for them once again. Short course racing appears his go in life, he’s in form and has the runs under the belt.
Race 8. (16:02) Bentleys Handicap (Class 6) 1350m
Can 4 Langhro (Bet Now: $2.50) be trusted? The gentle hands of Michael Cahill ensured he relaxed first up at the Gold Coast (Metro) three weeks ago and once the gaps appeared, he showed a brilliant turn of foot and was most impressive in winning. He can get quite keen in the run, so that’s the query here up in trip, but if he relaxes like first up, he’s the one to beat.
10 Enterprise Prince (Bet Now: $10.00) deserves a crack at Saturday grade. Mick Lakey has this bloke going really well at the moment, winning his past two. Surged hard to finish best two back at Ipswich before going to the Sunny Coast where he was given a lovely ride by Brad Stewart and clung on late to get the win. Think 1350m on the tight track will suit, like it did at Ipswich when winning, and is a leading chance.
6 Brains (Bet Now: $14.00) is a knockout chance IMO. This Tony Gollan trained galloper was really good late fresh behind Tokoriki Lad before going to Eagle Farm two weeks ago where he got back in the run and didn’t really come on at all behind Oink. He is 2/3 third up so the pattern is there to bounce back and you’ll get decent enough odds to find out just how well he’s going.
Race 9. (16:42) TAB Handicap 1350m
Potentially could be lovely placement from Team Snowden when it comes to 2 Grande Rosso (Bet Now: $19.00), who has had two runs in Melbourne to start his prep and while he hasn’t set the world on fire at each outing, the depth in those races has been far stronger than what he faces here. Gets a soft draw, dry ground, fitter…the set up is there for him to bounce back hard.
1 Order Again (Bet Now: $4.40) is the interesting runner. Class horse of the field for Brian Smith who resumes, having not raced since the Winter Carnival, where the highlight came in the Lord Mayors Cup when winning impressively over the mile, so 1350m here is short of his best, but he can sprint well fresh and he does have a bit on these in terms of class, so watch the market.
I think back in trip will suit 10 Aqua Vite (Bet Now: $20.00). He was well specked at odds when racing over the mile at Eagle Farm last Saturday but gee he was disappointing behind Kubis after getting a decent enough run near the speed. He does have a very good record at Doomben and perhaps back to 1350m will spark some improvement. Outside winning chance.
