The in-form three-year-old Oliveanotherday has booked a shot at stakes company in Adelaide after extending his outstanding autumn campaign with another commanding win at Caulfield on Saturday.
The gelding has now won all three starts this preparation by a combined margin of 10 lengths, with trainer Tom Dabernig saying the results have come as no surprise given the opinion he has long held of the horse.
“I always thought he was well above average and we knocked back some big offers from Hong Kong,” Daberbig told Racing.com.
“It’s hard to say what he’s beating but horses like Bacash ran really well at Flemington in a good form race, so that’s a good indication.
“He’s a horse that from early doors showed us plenty. He took a little time, being a Nicconi, to mature but his prep he’s been faultless.
“Today, there were a few question marks with the track and things. We always thought he liked the softer ground, and he travelled up so easily and put them away comfortably, so we couldn’t have hoped for anything better.
“Last time in, he won well at Geelong, and he didn’t like the turning track at Moonee Valley and he pulled up a little shin sore, so we put him away and that’s been the making of him.”
The Group 2 Tobin Bronze Stakes (1200m) in Adelaide on April 25 is now on the radar, with the race falling two weeks before the Group 1 Goodwood, which Dabernig indicated could also be considered before the gelding heads for a spell.
“We don’t want to go too far into the winter but three-year-olds have a good record in the Goodwood, so we’ll see.”
Starting at $2.35 with bookmakers, Oliveanotherday travelled strongly throughout and had the race under control well before the finish, eventually scoring by two lengths over Empire Song ($20), with Bacash ($3.80) finishing third.
