Castelvecchio headlines the nominations for the Caulfield Guineas

The countdown to Caulfield Guineas Day is on, with nominations closing today for Caulfield’s two 1600m classics.

A total of 324 three-year-olds have been nominated for the $2 million Caulfield Guineas (1600m), a huge increase on the 2018’s 267. The Schweppes Thousand Guineas (1600m) has also received a sharp rise on last year’s total of 237 nominations, with 285 fillies entered off the back of the doubling of prize money to $1 million.

Nominations for the Ladbrokes Caulfield Guineas are headlined by four Group 1-winning juveniles; Richard Litt’s Champagne Stakes winner Castelvecchio, Anthony Cummings’ J.J. Atkins Plate victor Prince Fawaz, Golden Slipper winner Kiamichi, trained by James Cummings, and Anthony Freedman’s Ladbrokes Blue Diamond Stakes champion Lyre.

Godolphin duo Lyre and Kiamichi lead the list of 24 fillies that have dual nominated for the Ladbrokes Caulfield Guineas and Schweppes Thousand Guineas, along with Ciaron Maher and David Eustace’s two-time Group 1 runner-up Loving Gaby.

Also among entries for the Schweppes Thousand Guineas are Godolphin’s Magic Millions Classic two-year-old winner Exhilarates, Jason Warren’s flying filly Brooklyn Hustle, and Blue Diamond Stakes runner-up Lankan Star, prepared by the Lindsay Park team.

Ladbrokes Caulfield Guineas Day on October 12 will provide one of the highlights on the Australian sporting calendar with four Group 1 events on offer, including the $1 million Caulfield Stakes (2000m) and $500,000 Toorak Handicap (1600m), as well as the $400,000 Group 2 Schillaci Stakes (1100m), which offers the winner the Melbourne Racing Club’s slot in the $14 million TAB Everest.
