A good field comes together for this Listed race headed by Group 1 winner, Sizzling who is an early quote of $1.90. Most of these will be targeting the $1M 3yo Magic Millions race on the Gold Coast, 12th January.

Brodies Gold Edition Plate Guide
1. Sizzling – C Munce (5)
An excellent effort when resuming behind Snitzerland 1200m in the Blue Sapphire Stakes at Caulfield before finsihing sixth (beaten 1 3/4 lengths), behind Nechita in the Coolmore Stud Stakes on Derby Day. Group One winner who looks perfectly placed under these conditions and should go very close. The one they’ll have to beat.
Odds: $1.90
2. Saluter – D Browne (13)
Resumed with a good effort under 59kgs when second to Players Choice over 1000m and then went one better at his most recent start, recording a long neck win over Spot The Rock in a Class 6 race over 1200m. Obviously going well but has drawn poorly for a horse that likes to race handy.
Odds: $7.00
3. Platinum State – J Byrne (1)
Gelding by Falvelon who has won three of his past four starts including his last start head win over Reflectance in Open company. That run was early October but has been kept honest with a length trial win on the Gold Coast on the 20th November. In good form, drawn well and has won four from six at this track.
Odds: $51.00
4. Holey Gadoley – J Stanley (12)
Returned from a spell with a fifth (beaten 4 ¼ lengths) behind The Conspirator over a 1000m on the 1st December under 58.5kgs. Better for that run and drops a little in weight but has drawn poorly and from seven starts this track, has only registered one win, that being a narrow victory over Stolen Kisses in April.
Odds: $67.00
5. Noogoora Burr – (11)
He ran fourth to Sizzling in the Group 2 Champagne Stakes (1200m) during the winter before failing on the Heavy ground in the Group 2 Sire’s Produce in June. He is having his first start since then and drawn wide.
Odds: $21.00
6. Reflectance – M Cahill (8)
Well bred son of Redoute’s Choice who has won three of his six starts thus far including a dominant last start win over 1500m in Open Company, late October. He hasn’t raced since but had a good hit-out in a Doomben Barrier Trial on the 4th December. Not to be underestimated and is worth including at $11.00
Odds: $11.00
7. The Conspirator – P Hammersley (7)
He has won three of his four starts including his last two outings. Settled on pace and got the job done when resuming from a let to register a head victory over Mishani Persuader and then 1 ¼ win, again I Open company and over the 1000m a fortnight ago.
Odds: $21.00
8. Lucky Hussler – M Palmer (9)
Bolted in to win a Doomben Maiden by 5 ½ lengths when resuming from a spell before jumping straight to Open Class at his last start and recording 1 ¼ length win over Sookie and Mishani Persuader. Has been impressive at both runs this time in and good style of win last start – has to go into calculations.
Odds: $6.50
9. Players Choice – M Hellyer (6)
Good win two starts back in Open Company over Saluter (won by a length) then had a month off and before running third, with every chance in the run, to The Conspirator. Drawn well and is yet to miss a place in four starts but may just find a few of these a bit too slick.
Odds: $26.00
10. Mishani Persuader – (4)
Won two (Lismore Maiden and Ballina BM 55) before a let and resuming with a good head second to The Conspirator in Open Company and then, at most recent start, going one better and winning a Class 3 over Candente. Gave the older horses weight last start and seems to be improving with each run. Drawn nicely and will put his best foot forward.
Odds: $26.00
11. Grayson Square – G Cooksley (14)
Debuted with a win head win at 30/1 in a Doomben Maiden back in August before a brief let-up and returning with two close-up fourths behind Reflectance and last start, Platinum State. Not out of place in this company but the second to widest gate will mean he’ll have to do it harder than most.
Odds: $41.00
12. Qfighter – G Colless (15)
A colt by Jet Spur out of the smart race mare Suzy Grey and who was 1 ¼ length second to The Conspirator at her most recent start. That effort to his record to two wins and two seconds from six starts and but has drawn the widest gate and both of her wins have been in races of lesser depth than this one.
Odds: $17.00
13. Snipzu – (2)
A filly who is lining up for twentieth start! She headed south for the Spring Carnival with the pick of her runs being a sixth (beaten 3.1 lengths) behind Cavalry Rose in the G3 Thoroughbred Classic. Sat handy last week in the , the Listed Mode Plate, only to weaken badly in the run home and finish a well beaten third last of seventeen. Not on her most recent efforts.
Odds: $101.00
14. Discreet – T Bell (3)
Only has the one win from eleven starts but despite that stat, form reads ok. Finished fourth behind Hoss Amour in the Listed Centenary Stakes and ran second to Saluter last preparation. Tackles this race first up and from good draw, might be worth a closer look.
Odds: $13.00
15. Ain’t She Sweet – L Cheshire (10)
She was spelled after 2-1/2 len 7th behind Platinum State back in September before resuming with a good finish to run third behind Angelus Belle in a Class 3 on the Toowoomba Cushion Track. Would have to improve again to figure here.
Odds: $126.00
SUMMARY
Whilst Sizzling looks the one to beat, I don’t know if I’ll be rushing in at this price. He has had a back injury and with the 3yo Magic Millions race his target in four weeks time, just a slight query on how wound up he’ll be. In this big field, he’ll be kept honest so unless he gets out in price, I’m opting for Reflectance. Liked the look of Reflectance in each of his starts and I’m expecting him to run a big race at each-way odds of $11.00.
