Scans have cleared Noel Callow of serious injury after a barrier accident at Werribee but Matt Pumpa will be sidelined for at least six months after fracturing his hip in an incident at Flemington.
Victorian Jockeys Association chief Des O’Keeffe said it was initially feared that Callow had broken his right leg on Thursday when he was pinned in the barriers by six-year-old first starter L’Esprit at Werribee but he was later found to have only severe bruising.
“It is not a significant injury so you would think Noel would be back within a couple of weeks,” O’Keeffe said.
However the news isn’t as good for Pumpa who fractured his hip in two places when dislodged from a horse at Flemington trackwork on Tuesday.
“He’s had surgery in two places but it’s estimated that he will out for a minimum of six months,” O’Keeffe said.
He said Pumpa was expecting to be discharged from Epworth Hospital on Friday or Saturday.
