Comeback sprinter Hay List will gallop at Gosford on Tuesday ahead of a hastily arranged barrier trial at Randwick on Friday.

Because the trials were moved from the Randwick course proper to the Kensington track, the trials were either 1200 or 850 metres with trainer John McNair not satisfied with either distance.

Following discussions with the Australian Turf Club, a 1000 metre heat has been added with seven horses to run including Tullamore and Rangirangdoo.

Tullamore had originally been entered for a 1200m heat and Rangirangdoo was to run over 850m.

“Neither distance was suitable for Hay List,” McNair said.

“He needs to trial and we would have had to go to Wyong which meant Glyn Schofield couldn’t ride him.

“I spoke to the club and they have arranged another trial so all’s well that ends well.”

Schofield will travel to Gosford on Tuesday to ride the dual Group One winner who is scheduled to resume in the Lightning Stakes (1000m) at Flemington on February 18.

“He’s going to Gosford to work in the morning,” McNair said.

“Tuesday will be his first gallop this preparation.

“With the gallop and the trial it means we are on track to start in the Lightning.”

The main focus of Hay List’s autumn will be in Sydney where his campaign is likely to include the Challenge Stakes, the TJ Smith and the All-Aged Stakes.

Hay List was run down in last year’s Group One TJ Smith (1200m) by Black Caviar then proved his mettle over 1400 metres when he backed up to win the All-Aged.

He also finished second to Black Caviar in the Lightning Stakes and the BTC Cup at Doomben.

While Hay List sat out the spring carnival with a leg infection, the unbeaten Black Caviar continued on her winning way to take her record to 16 wins from as many starts.

She seems assured of win number 17 when she resumes in Friday night’s Group Two Australia Stakes at Moonee Valley.
