What a great day today! Brilliant day!
Looking back at some great races from the history of Caulfield Guineas Day, it is no surprise that this is ranked by some punters to be up there with the best days in Australian racing.
Here is a quick look at today’s racing.
RACE 1 – CARLTON DRAUGHT HANDICAP (1200m)
Can’t say it is a race I’m really interested in. I think I’ll watch.
RACE 2 – GROUP 3 THOROUGHBRED CLUB STAKES (1200m)
Still not overly keen to play, but I’ll be very interested to see how HOLLYWEIRD goes. I had a big wrap on her in the spring.
RACE 3 – GROUP 2 HERBERT POWER HANDICAP (2400m)
Now we are talking! This is the final chance for many of these horses to qualify for the Caulfield Cup. As stated on Centrebet RacingRoom, I’m going to be cheering for SAPTAPADI. Looks the best of the internationals in the race, and I respect Kerrin McEvoy enormously in these staying races. Biggest danger, who is at silly odds, is MY SCOTSGREY. Wasn’t suited last week, I think he’ll go well here. Next best SHEWAN, who should have won two weeks ago, while BAUER looked back to his best last start and despite his problems, could go well.
RACE 4 – GROUP 2 SCHILLACI STAKES (1000m)
BLACK CAVIAR. KARUTA QUEEN. STIRLING GROVE. KULGRINDA. Easiest preview ever. I don’t really care about the minor money, just sit back and watch Black Caviar trounce her opposition.
RACE 5 – GROUP 1 CAULFIELD STAKES (2000m)
Gutted, absolutely gutted, by the scratching of At First Sight. I hope he’s right to take his place next week in the Caulfield Cup! Even more confident about LION TAMER now. Easier race than the Underwood Stakes and I think he can cement his place towards the top of Cox Plate markets. I’m interested in MIGHTY HIGH. Carried a massive weight in a handicap a few weeks back, and he wasn’t disgraced by any means. I think he’ll be more suited here. SINCERO and PLAYING GOD next best.
RACE 6 – GROUP 1 TOORAK HANDICAP (1600m)
The markets say I’ll look a fool after today’s racing. But I’m really confident about MUFHASA, or KING MUFHASA as he’s known here. He’s in career best form, he has good form links from his Futurity Stakes run here and I think he’s way over the odds. Should I have made him my best bet? Well, that’s up for debate…and I think I was a bit silly doing that! But I’ll look good if he wins anyway! I think TOORAK TOFF is the omen bet, and he looks the biggest danger. Outside of that, TORIO’S QUEST and LUEN YAT FOREVER are the other two that intrigue me.
RACE 7 – GROUP 1 CAULFIELD GUINEAS (1600m)
RACE 8 – LISTED NORTHWOOD PLUME STAKES (1200m)
Typically tough mares race. GYBE is racing in career best form, it is hard to overlook her. VALENTINE MISS looks the toughest to beat. DUBLEANNY has been racing below her best but she is well worth a place ticket in this grade, while PANIPIQUE was good last start.
RACE 9 – BMW HANDICAP (1400m)
I’m finding it hard to split TESTA MY PATIENCE and UTAH SAINTS, so I’m going to stay out!
