The Golden Rose Stakes is a big event each year in Australian racing. Because it is the first Group 1 race of the spring racing carnival, this race attracts a lot of attention from the racing community. Run over 1400 metres, the Golden Rose Stakes attracts horses that are keen to make their mark in mile races later in the season.

Both the Group 2 Theo Marks Stakes and the Group 3 Kingston Town Stakes are run on the same day as the Golden Rose Stakes, with a total of over $1.3 million prize money on offer. Along with being a great race in its own right, the Golden Rose Stakes is a great indicator for other prestigious events held in the upcoming season in Sydney and Melbourne.
In recent years, the Run to the Rose has been a great warm up event to this race, with Paratrooper in 2005 and Denman in 2009 both managing to win both events. Mentality won the Run To The Rose in 2006 before placing third in the Golden Rose Stakes, with other placegetters also featuring in both events.
The Group 3 Silver Shadow Stakes and Group 3 Up and Coming Stakes are also important warm up races for this event, with Court Command winning an Up and Coming/Golden Rose Stakes double in 2006 while Duport winning the 2008 Golden Rose Stakes after placing third in the Up and Coming Stakes.
The Golden Rose Stakes has changed a lot over recent years, being run as a Group 2 event until 2004 and becoming a Listed race for 2005. This event then became a Group 3 race in 2006, reverted back to a Group 2 event in 2008-09, and started its life as a Group 1 event in 2010. The 2011 race was won by Manawanui, who overcame a fast finishing Smart Missile in second and Helmet back in third.
