A nine race program has been assembled for Belmont on Saturday. The weather is fine, the track is soft (5) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (14:03) TABTOUCH W'SPEED PLAT. (RS0MW) 1600m
Tricky race but leaning towards 2 General Grant (Bet Now:Β $2.40). He ran here last Wednesday when wide no cover for the trip and looked under pressure on the turn but he kept finding under pressure and surged hard late to get up and record a strong win. Up to the mile should be ideal and has more upside than most.
1 Speedy Miss (Bet Now:Β $4.20) has been around the mark this prep for Team Pearce and isn’t far off a win I feel. Ran over 1400m here three weeks back and kept finding the line from off the speed in a solid effort when third to Beat The Bell. 1600m is a query but the claim and gate one helps.
6 Many Mansions (Bet Now:Β $6.50) should be suited up to the mile again for the Gangemi team. Won the maiden two back over the mile at Kalgoorlie before having a mini let up and racing in the General Grant race mentioned above where he was very keen behind the speed and that brought him undone late. If he can relax better in the run, he’ll take beating.
Race 2. (14:38) FREE ENTRY TO BELMONT PK PLATE 1400m
Good race for the 3YO’s with a bit of depth engaged. I’m with 4 Cheerful Moment (Bet Now:Β $6.50) for Lindsey Smith. Expected to spank them last time out in a Northam maiden hence the $1.55 SP and he duly bolted up under Harvey, crossing to lead and winning comfortably. Harder here, clearly, and drawn wide, but I think can get across comfortably, land on speed and prove hard to beat.
The unbeaten run of 2 Trix Of The Trade (Bet Now:Β $2.45) came to an end here a fortnight back. Raced over 1200m when on speed and gave a solid kick when asked for the effort, but found one better in He’s A Sizzler. The query is 1400m, but perhaps with a more conservative steer, he’ll be more effective.
3 Gorgeous Gossip (Bet Now:Β $41.00) will likely lead this field up and give cheek. That is exactly what she did when racing here last Wednesday and looked the winner for a few strides but tired late when fourth to General Grant. Back to her own age, she’ll lead and run a cheeky race at odds.
Race 3. (15:17) TABTOUCH BETTER YOUR BET-RS1MW 1200m
2 Dunbar (Bet Now:Β $3.10) is a hard horse to catch from a betting perspective but take away the betting angle, he’s racing really well, and I think can take this out. Ran over this track/distance two weeks ago when back in the run and in a tricky spot. Sliced his way through the field and made up good ground behind Zephyr Queen. If the breaks go his way, he has the engine under the hood to beat these.
1 Sassy Trader (Bet Now:Β $2.30) has found winning form and could well go on with it. Led throughout and was dominant when winning here last Wednesday, albeit in a much easier than this, but his confidence should be up now, he likely leads this field up and will take beating.
4 Absolute (Bet Now:Β $10.00) has run well in town previously and from a soft gate, is a first four threat. Had excuses last time out at Kalgoorlie when wide no cover and tiring late when fourth to Turbo Power, a proven city performer. Does no work from the draw and is capable of figuring in the finish.
Race 4. (15:57) CROWN PERTH (BM63+) 1600m
Tricky race. I’m with 5 Roman Flirt (Bet Now:Β $2.30) for Team Pearce. Didn’t handle the bog and perhaps needed the run when resuming over 1200m here. Found a dry deck over 1400m at Northam last time out and under a lovely ride from Pike, she sprinted hard and was able to get there, just, with four lengths back to third. Like her up to the mile and Pike sticks.
Big tick for 8 Special View (Bet Now:Β $4.50) is that he gets to a more suitable trip. Was a few weeks between runs when racing over 1200m at Pinjarra a couple of weeks ago when leading and giving a solid kick but just feeling the pinch late. Jumping straight to the mile is interesting but has upside and potentially gets a soft lead.
9 Vintage Stock (Bet Now:Β $20.00) is a staying mare for Alan Matthews that resumes. This girl hasn’t raced since May 1 over 2200m at Ascot when off the speed and failing to come on behind Come Right Back. She can pull out a decent run fresh and has trialled very well to get ready.
Race 5. (16:37) AMELIA PARK (RS1MW) 1400m
3 Campese (Bet Now:Β $1.95) looks one of the better bets on the program. Michael Lane trained gelding that has had two runs back from a spell and has been quite strong each time, resuming with a second to Kaptain Kaos before an unlucky second to Zephyr Queen two weeks ago. That form is A1 for this and up to 1400m, I’m keen on him.
1400m is the query with 1 Ohbeeh (Bet Now:Β $5.50) but gee he’s a beauty for Jim Taylor that is just so honest. Looked the winner for the most part when racing here a fortnight back but was getting the staggers late and was nabbed on the peg by Gunmetal Grey. If he finds the front and gets control, potentially a cheap furlong, the 1400m might well be okay.
4 Marlize (Bet Now:Β $16.00) is racing really well this time in for George Dupre. Suck run behind the speed and was able to get the job done two back at Pinjarra before racing here two weeks ago and I thought she worked to the line pretty well when third to Devoted Star. Similar field here, just has to overcome the tricky draw.
Race 6. (17:20) MRS MAC'S(BM72+) 1400m
Safe option is 5 No Apology (Bet Now:Β $5.00). Stephen Miller trained gelding that resumed at this track/distance three weeks ago where he had the suck run behind the speed before angling into clear air and I loved the way he kept coming under riding, surging late to get the better of his rivals. Run of the race from the inside gate and is hard to beat.
Market will be fascinating with 9 Fangio (Bet Now:Β $5.50), a quality mare for Roy Rogers that resumes. This girl hasn’t raced since March 20 at Ascot when wide no cover and feeling the pinch late behind That’s Funny Az. Resumes without a trial, but a good lead is the stable finds Pike to ride.
3 Red Publisher (Bet Now:Β $7.50) is ten years of age but gee he’s racing well for Ashley Maley. Ran over the mile here two weeks back and ran his usual honest race, being game in defeat when third to True Attraction. Think back to 1400m is no issue for him and should be thereabouts again.
Race 7. (17:55) QUAYCLEAN (BM66+) 2200m
Those who have read my Belmont previews in recent weeks will know about the theory with 10 Sugar Cain (Bet Now:Β $3.70) that she only runs well for one rider, William Pike. He jumped on her two weeks ago here and bless her and bless Pike at the $7, she was able to drive hard late and win. Now she’s found winning form, she can keep winning at this level.
1 Born To Try (Bet Now:Β $3.40) should appreciate getting to a more suitable trip. Lindsey Smith trained mare that was seven weeks between runs and 2200m back to the mile when racing here three weeks back and I thought she was pretty good from off the speed when third to Kelly’s Callisto. Back up in trip, with the claim, she’s a definite winning threat.
2 Picture Perfect (Bet Now:Β $5.00) is three weeks between runs for Team Williams since racing in the Kelly’s Callisto race mentioned above. He was off the speed throughout and looked to travel well but when the sprint went on, he couldn’t go with them and battled late. He’s proven at this trip, so stepping up in distance is a key positive.
Race 8. (18:30) JOLLY BEGGAR STAKES (BM78+) 1000m
I want to give 4 Son Of A God (Bet Now:Β $7.50) another chance. Forgive and forget he went around first up in the Newmarket three weeks ago. Just went way too keen in the run and used all his energy before the straight. If he can relax in the run, he can bounce back to his best, which sees him win this IMO.
8 Iseered Iseered (Bet Now:Β $2.30) has done little wrong in his career to date for Luke Fernie and I think can measure up here. Strong win from him first up here a fortnight back, producing a brilliant finale from off the speed to win and win well. Soft gate to use and has upside to come.
Fast run 1000m should suit 5 Jericho Missile (Bet Now:Β $18.00). He ran over 1200m here last time out when back off the speed and though did make up ground, was never really a winning threat. Interesting he comes back to 1000m but he’ll be strong at the end off a good speed.
Race 9. (19:10) FURPHY (BM66+) 1000m
I’ll take a chance with 12 Spin The Knife (Bet Now:Β $3.80), a talented three year old for Luke Fernie that resumes. This guy had a three run Autumn prep as a juvenile to start his career, winning impressively on debut before being luckless in the Supremacy. Then went to the Karrakatta and was a nutcase in front, dropping out late. Trialled very well leading in and big tick is that the stable finds Pike for the resumption.
5 Silkinize (Bet Now:Β $17.00) is a pure dry tracker so the weather forecast for later this week is ideal for him to find positive form. He has just been battling of late, his latest run seeing him finish second last behind Crystal Spirit a few weeks ago. His best is more than capable of causing problems.
9 Solid Azza (Bet Now:Β $35.00) is an interesting runner. David Harrison trained mare that resumes, having not raced since finishing midfield in the Fitzpatrick Plate during the Albany Carnival behind Echo Effect. Sprints well fresh and stable finds Harvey to steer. Just a matter of where she gets to from the gate.
