Trainer Gavin Bedggood hopes to one day see debut winner Burning Heartz in an Oaks race, but first he is looking to gather a Stakes win with the filly.
A debut winner at Sandown on July 1, Burning Heartz is Adelaide bound to run in the Group 3 South Australian Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) at Morphettville Parks on Saturday.
Bedggood had considered giving Burning Heartz a break after her Sandown victory, but reasoned a Stakes win on top of the debut win would look good on her record.
Another factor in deciding on a trip to Adelaide was the track condition which was in the heavy range on Friday after the filly scored on a heavy track at Sandown.
“I had the option of tipping her out and putting her away for the spring, but’s shown us that she’s very adept on wet ground,” Bedggood said.
“There was this Stakes race, so it’s a chance to have a two-year-old that’s a city winner with the chance to add some Black Type to her name.
“It is almost mission accomplished if she could do that.
“She’s got good ability. Wet ground is zero issue, and she’s drawn a good barrier, so I think she will be very competitive over there.”
At some time in the near future, Bedggood said Burning Heartz would require a break, which in turn may rule out the possibility of a start in the VRC Oaks (2500m) at Flemington in November.
But Bedggood said there was plenty of Oaks’ options in the autumn where the tracks may be more suitable.
“We’ll reassess what happens after Saturday’s race, but she will need a break at some point,” Bedggood said.
“How long that is, I’m not too sure.
“You would like to think she could be an Oaks filly, but that may be in the autumn when the tracks are a bit softer too.”
