Australia Day racing in Sydney heads to Warwick Farm for an eight race card, headlined by the Australia Day Cup (2400m). The weather is overcast, the track is good (4) and the rail is out five metres from the 1000m-Winning Post; Out three metres for the remainder.
Race 1. (13:00) Tab.com.au Plate 1200m
2 Irish Success (Bet Now: $4.80) is a Matty Smith trained three year old who was kept safe in betting when resuming at Canterbury where he attempted to lead all the way and to his credit he gave a pretty solid kick but just found Al Mah Haha too good on the day, and that horse has run well again since, so the form looks good.
3 Kookabaa (Bet Now: $6.00) is a Chris Waller trained gelding that is first up here. He was around the mark for the most part last time in but couldn’t quite crack it for a win. Trials leading in have been sharp and he has had good experience at Warwick Farm, something that probably shouldn’t be undersold, especially in a maiden.
4 Reflectivity (Bet Now: $9.00) is a son of All Too Hard that resumes for Team Hawkes. Bred to be anything but hasn’t lived up to the early hype. Had a two run Spring prep, both in hot maidens and was far from disgraced each time. Just given the one soft trial to prepare, so he might need the run, but he has quality.
Race 2. (13:35) Book ATC Summer Hospitality Handicap (66) 1600m
1 Amanito (Bet Now: $3.90) is a son of Pierro for the Snowden camp who is putting together a tidy record. Strong debut winner at Newcastle before failing at Kembla over 1400m. Then ran at the track/distance again and the punters landed some good bets with the gelding finishing over the top under a smart ride from Tye Angland. Mile no issue, rates highly.
2 Rockin’ Ruga (Bet Now: $3.00) is a progressive gelding for the Waterhouse/Bott team who debuted with a close up fourth to Al Mah Haha at Canterbury before racing here last Wednesday where he did a bit of work on speed yet kept finding under Tim Clark for a narrow but good win. Maps super here and should take some beating.
5 Cool Dude Ausbred (Bet Now: $13.00) looks to have a decent engine under the hood. Problem is he just does too much wrong. That was the case last time out at Canterbury in a field of four where he sat last throughout and wanted to do plenty wrong behind them when attempting to make ground. Tongue tie goes on now to hopefully relax him.
Race 3. (14:10) TAB Handicap (80) 1100m
2 Missile Coda (Bet Now: $4.40) on top. Team Snowden trains this promising mare, who is resuming after a mixed Winter/Spring prep. Ran really well in the Winter but by the end she probably had enough and was looking for the paddock. Has looked pretty sharp in a couple of barrier trials and is unbeaten fresh.
1 Lake Lugarno (Bet Now: $4.80) is a beauty for the Barry Molly camp at Forbes. Puts herself on speed, gives her all and fights. That was the case last time out at Canterbury when leading all the way and winning in fast time. Think she has the early toe to come across these and the claim for Innes Jr is a big tick.
6 Once More A Lady (Bet Now: $3.50) is a daughter of Congrats that resumes for the Joe Pride team. This mare was solid without setting the world on fire in the Winter but in saying that, she did contest much stronger races than what she faces here. Two trials leading in have been encouraging and she can sprint well fresh.
Race 4. (14:45) #theraces Handicap (77) 1000m
9 Brook Magic (Bet Now: $2.40) looks very well placed here by Joe Pride. Talented filly that is first up after a solid Winter prep, which ended with a down the track effort in the Quezette behind Crown Witness. Looks a jump/run type and appears wound up to win first up off the back of a couple of sharp trial victories.
4 Rose Of Man (Bet Now: $4.00) is a Terry Robinson trained mare who has come back in outstanding order. Resumed with a gritty win at Moruya before racing at Randwick on New Years Day where she was backed in from double figure odds and the plonk was landed with a dominant on speed win. She is normally ridden cold, but ridden near the speed, she is being much more effective. Hard to ignore her.
1 Mana (Bet Now: $5.00) is a talented galloper that resumes for the Joe Pride yard. Goes much better with give in the track but he looks wound up to run well to my eye off the back of a sharp trial win here. No claim either, with Bowman being booked. I’ll take that as a good lead that the horse is ready to go.
Race 5. (15:20) TAB Rewards Handicap (71) 1200m
6 Tswalu (Bet Now: $5.50) for me. Talented mare for David Pfieffer who resumed with a top win at Wyong before going to Randwick where she loomed large to win but just couldn’t dash when required, settling for third to Fortensky. The drop back in depth and back to racing on her home track are the two ticks for me to have her on top.
7 All In The Reflxes (Bet Now: $4.50) had trialled up a storm prior to resuming at Canterbury where I think pilot error cost her the win when second to Forbidden Kisses. King elected to ease out instead of staying in. I think if she chose the latter, she wins. But in saying that, the run was still good. On her home track now, she should take some beating.
8 Bold Chance (Bet Now: $7.50)is a talented gelding that resumes for the Kris Lees stable and could be a horse on the path towards the Provincial Championships, so it’ll be interesting to see what he does here. Had been doing well on the Mid North Coast before Lees sent him to Wyong and he bolted up before being tipped out. Looks ready to go off the trials.
Race 6. (16:00) Vili's Pies Australia Day Cup 2400m
Pretty confident that 7 Cordero (Bet Now: $2.80) can put this lot away. He has put together three sharp wins, the last two coming over the 2400m at Randwick, the latest coming a tick under two weeks back when ridden a treat by Jay Ford, who rode the horse with great patience and that was rewarded at the end. Looks so well placed.
4 Vassal (Bet Now: $4.80) is a one batter for the Chris Waller team but usually with these staying races, they take their turns at winning and he may get a chance. Last start second in the Tatts Cup behind Prince Cheri was solid enough and to the eye, he looked to trial well on Monday. Not badly treated at the weights either.
5 Dee I Cee (Bet Now: $9.50) is on the quick back up for the Waterhouse/Bott team after racing in the Gosford Cup last Thursday where I thought he did a really good job from the back to run fourth to the low flying Singing, who’d start nearly odds on against this lot. Reads well for this and big tick with the short turnaround.
Race 7. (16:40) 2018 ATC Membership Handicap (75) 2200m
4 Peribsen (Bet Now: $3.90) is a one batter, but he will be run the trip and that is why I have him just on top. To be fair, he was gone 400m out last time at Kembla but he just kept finding under Tye and held on to beat Varuska, who won at Newcastle on Saturday, so the form reads well. He’ll eat up 2400m and has upside.
1 Irish Optimism (Bet Now: $10.00) was somewhat unwanted in betting when racing over 1900m at Canterbury last time out but with some help from a lovely steer from Declan McDonogh, the gelding finished over the top and scored a sharp win given he was only second up. Little query at 2200m but who am I to doubt Chris Waller.
6 The Gavel (Bet Now: $12.00) has been given three weeks off since racing over the 1900m at Canterbury where he had a bit of each way support at odds but after receiving a nice sit just off the pace, he couldn’t quite go on with it when fourth to Beijing Board. Hard to trust, but is a winner at 2200m and this is a thin race.
Race 8. (17:20) ATC Handicap (75) 1400m
14 Aquatic (Bet Now: $5.00) is a bit of a non winner but gee he is racing well despite that. Closed off with purpose last time out at Randwick out wide when second to the potential blacktype mare Sugar Bella. Has only won the one race from 20 outings, but he is racing much better than that record suggests. Definite threat.
The Warwick Farm 1400m isn’t ideal for 1 Wahng Wah (Bet Now: $9.00) but in terms of quality, she’d have most of these covered. Thought her effort last Friday night over the 1550m at Canterbury was excellent when just missing out on picking up Francesco. Thought she’d step up in trip not come back so that is a concern, but hopefully she won’t concede too much of a start from the draw.
12 Vaniloquio (Bet Now: $14.00) is a beauty for the Clarry Conners team. He has rarely run a bad race for the stable since coming from Hong Kong. Ran here last Wednesday and closed off well late to run second to the above average Danzie. That does read well for this. Now he’s hard the hard 1400m run under the belt, he’ll be better off.
