A bumper nine race card has been set down for Geelong on Wednesday for Geelong Cup Day. The weather is fine, the track is soft (5) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.

Race 1. (12:40) Canadian Club (Bm70) 2400m
10 Cherokee Brave (Bet Now:Β $SP.00) for me in the opener. Danny O’Brien trained gelding that comes through a 1700m race at Warrnambool when back off the speed and in a race dominated by the leader and eventual winner, Unfair Dismissal. The sharp rise in trip I find interesting but he maps perfect, he gets B Shinn and gets home track advantage.
5 Muktamil (Bet Now:Β $SP.00) commands respect for Busuttin/Young. He ran over 3000m at The Valley last start and I thought was given every chance in the run under Mott but just found one better in Privileged Son. Back to 2400m should be fine, he’s hard fit, in form…appeals.
11 Bellakai (Bet Now:Β $SP.00) is a mare in form Symon Wilde and has earned a crack at this kind of race. Not sure she beat much at Mount Gambier last time but the way she gave them a start and a beating, and how strong she was in the run to the line, was impressive. Think she can measure up.
Race 2. (13:15) Brandt Colac (Bm64) 1100m
7 Under And Over (Bet Now:Β $SP.00) looks the map horse and with clear air, she’ll take holding out. She hasn’t raced since Nov 24 over 1000m at The Valley when just off the speed and kept finding the line but couldn’t quite get there when third to Our Cracklin Rosie. Maps to get a good run near the speed and IMO, will take holding out.
11 Thames (Bet Now:Β $SP.00) has a good engine under the hood for James Cummings and despite a tricky gate, she commands respect. She ran over 1200m at The Valley last time and while she was held by Stoli Boli, she kept on and was quite good in defeat. Tricky draw, but with luck running, she takes beating.
13 Grinzinger Love (Bet Now:Β $SP.00) has done little wrong this time in for Danny O’Brien. She was far too good for a moderate bunch at Echuca two back before going to Murtoa where she was ridden with somewhat of a sit and kept on in a pretty good effort. Maps to no work and while I doubt she wins, she can run top four.
Race 3. (13:50) Scaada Sustainability (Bm70) 1300m
9 Great Gust (Bet Now:Β $SP.00) is the each way speck for me in what looks an open contest. He was kept quite safe in betting when resuming at Sale but he was outstanding I thought, giving them a start and a beating in an electric return. The rise to 1300m suits and drawn inside, he can settle much closer in the run and still be effective late.
4 Dual Pressure (Bet Now:Β $SP.00) is in for a good prep for Matty Ellerton. This gelding resumed down the straight at Flemington and kept finding the line from off the speed but was no match late for the impressive winner Isthmus. Back to a bending track, fitter and up in trip, I say he only runs well.
2 Wolfy (Bet Now:Β $SP.00) should appreciate a rise to 1300m. He ran over 1200m down the straight at Flemington last time when back near last in the run and while he was never threatening, he kept finding the line in a solid enough effort. If he is within range, he has the finale to be dangerous.
Race 4. (14:25) Marcus Oldham College (Bm64) 1400m
Really open race this so going to back 13 Dramaticus (Bet Now:Β $SP.00) each way. Not sure he beat much on debut at Bendigo but what I liked is the way he dug in when required to fend them off and win, finding under pressure and was strong to the line in winning. Presses forward and for mine, will only run well.
3 Delivering (Bet Now:Β $SP.00) has a tricky gate to overcome but he’s racing really well at present for Ciaron Maher. He ran over 1400m at Ballarat last time when near the speed and he fought hard but couldn’t quite get the win when second to Laa De Sha. If the wide gate can be overcome, he’s a key threat.
5 War Drama (Bet Now:Β $SP.00) has to be given another look. He ran over 1400m at Cranbourne last time out where he got back in the run and failed to get involved behind Think Winning, making up minimal headway so forgive and forget. His best is good enough so I wouldn’t be dismissing him.
Race 5. (15:00) Geelong Classic 2200m
1 Lavalier (Bet Now:Β $SP.00) is racing like he will eat up 2000m after two runs at the Flemington 1800m on the bounce, the latest being a few weeks back in the Super Impose where he got back and did make up ground but was never threatening. Just needs a positive ride and I do think that the rise in trip will be ideal.
4 Hot Too Go (Bet Now:Β $SP.00) is knocking on the door to win and for mine, commands respect. He attempted to lead throughout over the mile at Seymour last start, giving a very strong kick from the front and just couldn’t quite finish the job when second to Cavalry Man. The rise to 2200m is the query but if he gets a soft lead, he’ll take running down.
11 Rotating Soul (Bet Now:Β $SP.00) is a massive price here I feel. I was quite keen on her last time at Cranbourne but just forget she went around. The race was a mess, she was back, held up…and just never got involved. The debut in the Oaks Trial was very good and up to 2200m in a thin race, I think she’ll only run well.
Race 6. (15:35) Sen Track (Bm70) 1700m
10 Musgrave (Bet Now:Β $SP.00) is a little while between runs but is genuine and to me seems an each way play. Ciaron Maher trained gelding that ran over 1700m at Warrnambool where he got held up at times but that said, he was never a factor in an on pace dominated affair won by Unfair Dismissal. Think with luck in running, he’s good enough to take this out.
4 He’ll Rip (Bet Now:Β $SP.00) commands respect for mine. Corstens/Larkin trained gelding that ran over 1400m at Flemington where he got into a decent spot off the speed and worked home well enough when second to a handy horse in Saban. The rise in trip is fine and third up from a spell, he should just about be hard fit, ready to go.
2 Verifier (Bet Now:Β $SP.00) should appreciate a rise to 1700m. This guy resumed over 1400m on Seymour Cup Day where he got back in the run and while he was never threatening, he kept finding the line in a good effort behind Titan Of Choice. Better set up here. he commands respect.
Race 7. (16:10) Geelong Cup 2400m
Landed with 9 Unusual Legacy (Bet Now:Β $SP.00). He was quite good in defeat I thought in The Metropolitan. He got into an awful spot from a good gate, wide no cover for a fair chunk of the race, but he stayed on to run third to Land Legend. Gets a big, big jockey upgrade, and with better luck, he takes beating.
14 Birdman (Bet Now:Β $SP.00) is the clear X Factor. UK import that is with Chris Waller after formerly being with Jessica Harrington. The fact he is running here tells me that the stable must be happy with the way he’s going and want to get him into the Melbourne Cup, which is the good lead because Waller is happy to be patient with imports.
6 The Map (Bet Now:Β $SP.00) was horrendous in this race last year but she is going much better 12 months on. She ran in the Herbert Power at Caulfield where she got back in the run and while she was never a winning threat, she kept finding the line and was pretty good in defeat. Gets J Kah, maps to do no work and be strong late.
Race 8. (16:45) Rex Gorell Volkswagen Plate (Bm84) 1200m
4 Barber (Bet Now:Β $SP.00) each way for me. Handy galloper for James Cummings that hasn’t been too bad in two runs back, the latest coming over 1200m at The Valley when off the speed and kept finding the line in a pretty good effort behind Baraqiel. If he can settle closer in the run and still be effective late, he takes beating and looks a big price.
11 Moby Dick (Bet Now:Β $SP.00) is getting towards D-Day if indeed he is going to be a Stakes class horse or just a benchmark galloper. Both runs back have come down the straight at Flemington, winning fresh before a close up fourth where he was looking the winner but couldn’t quite finish the job. Third up, hard fit, back to a bending track, D-Day i say.
8 I Am War (Bet Now:Β $SP.00) is a very interesting runner. Trevor Andrews trained gelding that resumes, having not raced since the Manikato last year when down the track and outclassed when last behind star mare Imperatriz. He is a horse who can sprint well on the fresh side and his trial work has been more than encouraging.
Race 9. (17:20) The Sporting Globe (Bm78) 1500m
I am confident that 6 Modown (Bet Now:Β $SP.00) will win this and then win the Final during Cup Week. Ridden like it was a barrier trial fresh at Sale before going to Sandown where the race shape was against him, he kept finding the line behind Freak Of Nature. Third up, hard fit and B Shinn on, intent is there to say he’s here to rumble. Very keen.
11 Boltsaver (Bet Now:Β $SP.00) is on the seven day back up for Rhys Archard after racing last Wednesday at Caulfield where he got back to near last in the run but I really liked the way he finished his race off in defeat behind Russian Meteor. Has a gate to settle much closer in the run and J Kah on, he appeals.
5 Unseen Ruler (Bet Now:Β $SP.00) is a must for exotics. He resumed over 1400m on Seymour Cup Day where he got back in the run and while he was never threatening, his finale was quite good in defeat behind Titan Of Choice. Fitter and up in trip, maps to do no work…dangerous at odds.
