The Sydney Spring Carnival continues this Saturday at Randwick, headlined by the inaugural edition of the $2 Million Invitation. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out eight metres from the 1000m-Winning Post; Out five metres for the remainder.

Race 1. (12:30) World Gym Castlereagh Kirkham 1000m
1 Contemporary (Bet Now: $2.70 TOP ODDS) on top for me in the opener. James Cummings trained colt that has already had a race start, which came over 900m down the Flemington straight where he was raw and new, understandably so, but switched on and surged late to just miss out on the win. Tick over trial at Warwick Farm was a lovely piece of work and with race experience/fitness, I think that holds him in good stead.
2 Midori Fuji (Bet Now: $14.00 TOP ODDS) looks to have his share of talent. Kermadec colt that led throughout to win a Warwick Farm trial, drawing clear late under little riding and it was a good piece of work. He’ll likely land on speed here from the good draw and suspect he’ll be strong at the end.
8 Belriah (Bet Now: $11.00 TOP ODDS) is a Pariah filly for Gary Portelli that has had a couple of trials to get ready for start one. She trialled at the official 2YO set at Kensington. Then went to Warwick Farm where she had inside running and went through the motions nicely to win the trial. Needs to improve, but she did improve big time from trial one to trial two.
Race 2. (13:05) Tab Hcp (c3) 1800m
Admittedly it is a Highway, but I think 7 Foodie King (Bet Now: $7.00 TOP ODDS) is one of the better gambles on the card. Michael Mulholland has this guy flying at the moment. He ran in the 1600m Highway here two weeks ago and in the form guide it will say 9/17, beaten over four lengths, but he should have gone close to winning. Got badly held up at a vital stage before eventually getting clear and produced a sharp last 200m. He’ll eat up 1800m and with better luck, I’m confident he goes close.
3 Whatsin (Bet Now: $8.00 TOP ODDS) is yet to prove herself beyond 1400m but off the Highway run last time, 1800m should be ideal. The Lord Desanimaux Highway seems to be the key form reference from two weeks back and this mare didn’t have the best of luck. She should be strong at the end and is a key chance.
6 Proven Class (Bet Now: $26.00 TOP ODDS) should be suited up to 1800m. I was on this mare in the Lord Desanimaux Highway last time and she just got too far back in the run. Never really a winning threat, but her finale was more than sound I thought. Got upside to come and up in trip, she can threaten.
Race 3. (13:40) Brian Crowley Stks 1200m
1 O’President (Bet Now: $8.50 TOP ODDS) is a big watch. Chris Waller trained colt that had just one soft trial leading into the Roman Consul and I just think the lack of fitness didn’t help his cause given the fast overall time and run race behind Paulele. He has credits in the bank, so want to give him another chance.
You don’t often see Chris Waller send a debut maiden winner straight to Stakes company so when he does, you have to take notice. 5 Able Willie (Bet Now: $2.25 TOP ODDS) is the horse I’m referring to and his debut win on the Kenso track was simply outstanding and his late splits were that of a very good horse. Confident he measures up.
2 Mazu (Bet Now: $3.90 TOP ODDS) is a very interesting runner. Team Snowden trained colt that looked a Golden Rose/Caulfield Guineas type in the Autumn but three runs back from a break suggested he isn’t up to that level. Has been given a fresh up and looked to trial up nicely behind Classique Legend. Market watch for sure.
Race 4. (14:15) Midway (bm72) 1200m
I think 4 Media Starguest (Bet Now: $10.00 TOP ODDS) can resume a winner. Ron Quinton trained four year old that resumes, having not raced since June 2 at Warwick Farm when back in the run and did make up ground without really threatening behind Jungle Book. The run prior, he was excellent in the Inglis Guineas, so he has the form to be winning this and looks to have trialled well leading in.
3 Air To Air (Bet Now: $4.00 TOP ODDS) has the talent to blow this field away. Problem for her is that she has such an awful racing pattern. She could easily be a multiple Stakes winner if she had the rub of the green, so that is the talent she has. Two trials to get ready, she’ll be launching late.
I’m interested in 10 Serena (Bet Now: $26.00 TOP ODDS), a Robert Pearse trained that is first up. Her last run came on July 31 in a Midway here when far from disgraced behind Ashman, who of course came out to win the Cameron soon after, so the form does read quite well. Resumes without a trial, but a must for exotics at odds.
Race 5. (14:50) Robrick Lodge Filante Hcp 1400m
4 Criaderas (Bet Now: $4.00) just wins this if he brings anywhere near his best. Talented animal for James Cummings that resumes. Tried to force his way into the Doncaster in the Autumn but things didn’t go to place for him. Couple of trials to get ready and though the latest trial was ugly to the eye, keep an eye on past the post. 200m after, he was in front of the field. I think he’ll finish over the top and potentially head to Perth for a crack at the Railway.
2 Quackerjack (Bet Now: $9.50) is a Mark Newnham trained gelding that is first up and you would think has eyes on the Villiers in search of securing a Doncaster berth. This guy hasn’t raced since January when a narrow second to Bandersnatch in the Carrington. Two trials to prep and he looks spot on for a first up tilt.
7 Starspangled Rodeo (Bet Now: $10.00) is third up from a break and should just about be at peak fitness. Bjorn Baker trained gelding that comes through the Big Parade race from three weeks ago here when attempting to lead throughout and tried hard, but lacked the class to finish it off. Form has been ticked off and up to 1400m, he can improve.
Race 6. (15:25) Geyer (bm78) 1600m
4 Lord Ardmore (Bet Now: $21.00) should love the rise to the mile. Former Kiwi that made his Australian debut over 1400m at Warwick Farm. It was essentially a barrier trial and for a horse that is best suited at 2000m+. he had no chance but was good in defeat behind Suave, who ran well last Saturday in a good race. Form reads well and this looks a good set up.
11 Five Kingdom (Bet Now: $13.00) looks beautifully placed in a race like this. He ran in an 88 here three weeks ago and ran a super race despite being outclassed on paper behind Wairere Falls, beaten just under five lengths. 88 to 78 is usually a good recipe, so he has to be respected here.
7 Elizabeel (Bet Now: $7.00) is a talented mare for John Sargent that is on the seven day back up after racing last Saturday over 1400m here. She didn’t get the rub of the green but was good late behind Promise Of Success. Fitter and up to the mile, and back a bit in depth, she appeals.
Race 7. (16:10) City Tattersalls Cup 2400m
3 Zeyrek (Bet Now: $2.80) is a working progress for Team Hawkes. Bias helped him I thought two back in the Kingston Town. Then in The Metropolitan, where he again got a suck run behind the speed and battled on pretty well in defeat when fourth. Most progressive of this lot and is hard to beat.
2 Cepheus (Bet Now: $6.00) is back on track. Jury was out after a couple of plain runs but they slapped the Blinkers on in the Hill Stakes and he ran a much improved race when third to Think It Over, who won again last Saturday. Fitter and up to 2400m, if he brings that form, he’ll go close here.
5 Skymax (Bet Now: $9.50) looks to be ticking along nicely. Resumed and looked in need of the run in the Premiers Cup Prelude. Mini freshen up and ran in the Colin Stephen when on a strong speed and fought on gamely behind Entente. Getting towards peak fitness and I think will give cheek.
Race 8. (16:45) Bondi Stakes 1600m
1 Hilal (Bet Now: $2.35) has finally got another win on the board. Can he go on with it? He was dreadful in the Golden Rose but perhaps the key gear change of Tommy Berry back on may have been the difference when he finished best to take out the Stan Fox two weeks ago. I’m backing him in to go on with it now.
2 Coastwatch (Bet Now: $3.90) has done little wrong this time in for Chris Waller. Game third in a high rating Golden Rose. That ensured he was odds on in the Stan Fox and to my eye, he seemingly had every chance and was run down late by Hilal. Is he looking for the paddock? Market will be the guide.
8 Keefy (Bet Now: $26.00) creates interest. Formerly with David Vandyke, he now finds himself with Brad Widdup. This guy lacks the class of some of these, but is hard fit who lands on speed. Du Plessis just went too slow on him at the Sunny Coast and was caught napping I thought instead of letting him roll. He’ll run a bold race from the front.
Race 9. (17:35) The Invitation 1400m
IMO, I think 12 Startantes (Bet Now: $9.50) can only run well here. Quality filly for Rob Heathcoate that comes back to 1400m after running a game third in the Flight Stakes behind Never Been Kissed, who went on to run well in the Spring Champion. Two big ticks for me. One, drop of rain is perfect and two, 52kg. Gee she gets in so well and is very likeable.
I think potential bad luck from a wide gate is the only negative for 6 Entriviere (Bet Now: $3.30). She’s a star mare for Jamie Richards that has been kept on ice since an outstanding effort in the Golden Pendant where she made a sustained run against the track pattern yet kept finding the line when third to Vangelic. Tick over trial behind Classique Legend was a lovely piece of work…I wasn’t sure about her at 1400m but after the Golden Pendant, I think she’ll be fine.
2 Nudge (Bet Now: $11.00) looks to have returned in really good order. Resumed two weeks back in the Northwood Plume at Caulfield and closed off her race with real purpose from off the speed when a close up third to Dirty Thoughts. Excellent return given she was first up over an unsuitable trip. Like her up to 1400m and she’ll be strong at the end.
Race 10. (18:10) Southern Cross Group (bm88) 1200m
9 Gravina… (Bet Now: $2.10) surely. Just surely he wins this. Should be 2/2 this time in but poor rides have cost him dearly, especially here three weeks back behind Big Parade where his late splits were simply enormous. Won’t mind give in the track and I think he wins.
She’s a beauty 6 Belluci Babe (Bet Now: $6.50). It was just a win first up at Gosford, but she proved that wasn’t just a win with a ripping effort from off the speed two weeks ago in the Nivison behind Minhaaj. She’s proven she can measure up against the better Mares and back in grade, she appeals big time.
10 Electric Girl (Bet Now: $11.00) has done little wrong in two runs back from a break. Resumed with a win at Gosford before going to the Nivison where she seemed outclassed on paper but in the end was far from disgraced in defeat. Back to benchmark company, she can take this out.
