The Adelaide Cup Carnival continues this Saturday at Morphettville where it is Lord Reims Stakes Day. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out eleven metres from the 1200m-Winning Post; Out eight metres for the remainder.
Lord Reims Stakes 🏆: View the Field and Odds for the Lord Reims Stakes
Race 1. (12:51) Pike & Joyce (bm82) 1600m
Was with 6 Ironclad (Bet Now: $2.30) at his Australian debut two weeks ago over 1200m here when really keen on his chances and see no reason to drop off. That was 1200m on a somewhat testing track, something I don’t think he liked, but in the end, class got him home. Fitter, up to a suitable trip, firmer footing…keen.
2 Ritratto (Bet Now: $1.85) is destined to have a crack at blacktype soon I feel. Mick Huxtable has done an outstanding job with this horse. He was out of sorts several months ago, so the stable sent him back in grade and since then, his confidence has gone through the roof with wins and dominant wins. Hard to beat once again.
Not sure 5 France’s Boy (Bet Now: $23.00) can win, but can certainly sneak a first four spot. Sat on speed at this track/distance two weeks ago outside Ritratto and tried hard, but couldn’t match it with that guy but stayed on and was sound in defeat in running third. He’ll have a similar style run and is honest.
Race 2. (13:26) Holdfast Insurance (bm60) 1050m
I’ll take a chance with 5 Larkham (Bet Now: $4.00). Ryan Balfour trains this gelding, who hasn’t raced since May 30 on the Parks track when just fair in what looked a strong 3YO race won by Silver Lining, beaten just over three lengths. Go back to his debut win, he smashed the clock and looked Stakes class so he’s more than capable of beating these and has had two jumpouts/one trial to get ready.
6 Three Tears (Bet Now: $3.70) is a Peter Hardacre trained mare that is racing so well at the moment. Has won her past two, both coming over 1000m at Murray Bridge. Latest effort saw her sit wide no cover for the trip yet she kept finding under pressure and was too good. Harder here, but have to like the way she is going about it.
2 Chucky (Bet Now: $5.00) doesn’t win out of turn but is usually thereabouts. Resumed at Gawler when sitting back, wide with cover, before peeling wider and letting down strongly, just missing out on the win. He’ll take good improvement off that and the lead here might well be that Pannell sticks.
Race 3. (14:01) Tab Adelaide Cup Day 8/3-bm68 1100m
Michael Hickmott has a smart filly on his hands in the shape of 2 Echoes In Eternity (Bet Now: $2.00) and I think she can win again. 2/2 this time in. Scraped in to win her maiden at Murray Bridge but nothing was scraped about her win here three weeks ago. She gapped them and the change up speed was impressive. See no reason why she can’t win again.
7 Pimm’s Party (Bet Now: $3.70) looks suited back to 1100m. In the run, she looked the winner when racing over 1250m on the Parks track last time but couldn’t quite finish it off behind River Twain. Better suited here in a fast run 1100m I feel and the lead here is that Stubby rides her over Daily Spirit.
Not sure what to do with 5 Daily Spirit (Bet Now: $8.50). Was somewhat against her when she raced in a 1200m maiden here two weeks ago but she found the front and got control. Once that happened, it was race over and she was too good. Harder here, but now she has won a race, can she go on with it?
Race 4. (14:36) Bill Swinton 80th (bm82) 1050m
3 Taken Off (Bet Now: $3.30) is a beauty for Phillip Stokes. He is in a rich vein of form at the moment and is potentially on trial to tackle better races during the Carnival. He has won his past two, the latest coming a few weeks back on the course proper here where he sat back off the speed before peeling wider and finishing over the top for an impressive win. He’s the one to beat.
Fresh legs at 1050m, think it’s an ideal race for the David Jolly trained 9 Toff Love (Bet Now: $20.00). Resumed with an impressive win at big odds at Murray Bridge before going back to 1100m at Gawler and worked home well late when third to Rock Hard. Third up, very likeable.
If 11 Little Rich Boy (Bet Now: $9.50) is to win this race, he will have to jump and run, making this a proper 1050m contest. Has to break them up early by setting a good speed. Sat near a fast speed here two weeks ago and despite being out of petrol tickets late, he clung on. Harder here, but weight relief and will give himself every chance.
Race 5. (15:11) Zilzie (bm78) 1800m
Fiter and up to 1800m I do like for 4 Nasseb (Bet Now: $27.00). Was 1700m back to the mile when racing here two weeks ago. He got back in the run and made up minor headway without really threatening behind Ritratto. Much better suited here I feel and back up in trip, his best is good enough to beat these.
Now that 2 Lord Vladivostok (Bet Now: $2.80) has found winning form, can he hold it? Took forever to get there last time but he surged when it mattered and the verdict went his way in a close finish. Was only second up, so you’d like to think there is improvement to come and up to 1800m is ideal.
9 Dreamed (Bet Now: $13.00) looks suited up in trip for Ryan Balfour and is a definite winning chance. Ran over the mile here three weeks back where she was off the speed and chased strongly, just missing out on picking up Echo Boomer. Two runs at the mile now, so the rise to 1800m should suit her.
Race 6. (15:46) Accolade Wines (bm60) 1540m
8 Trumpsta (Bet Now: $6.50) looks to have returned in good order. Phillip Stokes trains this gelding, who was somewhat luckless fresh at Strathalbyn before going to Murray Bridge where he looked in a bit of trouble but got a narrow split, drove through and was too good. Fitter, up in trip, likeable.
4 Echo Boomer (Bet Now: $6.00) is a mare that can be hard to trust at times but she does have the Patrick Payne polish and comes here as a last start winner at this track when finishing best from off the speed under Lachie Neindorf. Metcalfe and her 3kg claim comes in handy and maps to get a soft run off the pace.
Fitter and up in trip, 2 Canford (Bet Now: $51.00) can be dangerous here. Resumed over 1400m and was just never a factor after getting back in the run. Just couldn’t get involved so forget he went around. This looks a more suitable target for him and can pull out a decent run when produced second up.
Race 7. (16:26) Terry Howe Printing (bm64) 1200m
On top is 2 Tully’s Gold (Bet Now: $3.40) for Ryan Balfour. He is several weeks between runs, having not raced since December 19 at Gawler when on speed and trying hard. Just couldn’t quite finish it off when fourth to Ice Ghost. Been given a break and his tick over jumpout suggests he’s ready to go.
3 Midnight Storm (Bet Now: $3.50) is a leading contender. Formerly with Jim Smith but is now with the Macdonald/Gluyas camp. First run for the stable came at this track/distance two weeks ago when near the speed and for a few strides, he was hailed as the winner, but nabbed late by Pindaric. That form reads well for this.
12 Four Of A Kind (Bet Now: $10.00) is a key threat here. Phillip Stokes mare that was unwanted in betting late when racing here two weeks ago but I thought her run was solid from off the pace, working home well late behind Pindaric, running fourth. Think firmer footing helps her cause and has the change up speed to win.
Race 8. (17:06) Lord Reims Stks 2600m
Think 3 Long Arm (Bet Now: $3.10) can win this and then win the Adelaide Cup. Progressive import for the Gelagotis team that was very good in winning at Caulfield last time. Had to lump 60.5kg over 2400m and just kept finding late, surging hard to get up on the peg. He’ll eat up 2600m here, down in the weights, upside…really keen.
1 Mongolian Marshal (Bet Now: $18.00) has upside to come and is suited up in trip. Resumed two weeks ago in the Birthday Cup where was first up and nearer the inside, which wasn’t the spot to be as the day progressed. He stayed on though and given he was fresh, the run was a pass mark. Back on firmer footing, he can win for sure.
2 Eperdument (Bet Now: $23.00) won this race last year and is ticking along nicely towards another crack at it em route to the Adelaide Cup. Dominant win two back in the Strathalbyn Cup before backing up six days later in the Birthday Cup and worked home well when second to Declares War. She has found form and is holding it, so has to be respected.
Race 9. (17:46) Furphy (bm68) 1600m
6 Icecrusher (Bet Now: $8.50) is racing so well at the moment. Shayne Cahill trains this mare, who ran at Gawler at the midweeks where Cahill rode a perfect race on the mare, tracking the speed before edging wider towards the best part of the track and away she went. She was dominant and off that effort, has to be respected.
1 Ice Ghost (Bet Now: $10.00) is racing really well at the moment. Far from disgraced two back at Murray Bridge behind subsequent Stakes placegetter Mystyko before racing on the course proper here when back off the speed and chasing strongly to run second to Taken Off. Holds his form, hard to beat.
13 Flying Pierro (Bet Now: $21.00) doesn’t win out of turn but is honest and usually thereabouts. That was the case when racing here three weeks ago, working home nicely from the back to run fifth after spotting those in front a decent start. Not sure I could back him to win, but a win wouldn’t shock at all.
