Manikato Stakes Information

The Manikato Stakes is a Group 1 race held at Caulfield Racecourse in Victoria each year and is the one of the premier races of the Spring Carnival.

The Manikato Stakes (1200m) boasts a total prize pool of $2,000,000 and is run under weight-for-age conditions.

The Manikato Stakes 2026 will be run on September 27, 2026 at Caulfield Racecourse.

The Manikato Stakes is the ideal launching pad into the VRC Sprint Classic (1200m) and it follows up from the Moir Stakes (1000m).

Given it’s a sprint race, barriers you’d think would be important. But that isn’t the case, with the most successful barriers in the last 30 years being 10 and 11, with five wins each.

Manikato Stakes History

The Manikato Stakes is one of Moonee Valley’s great sprinting features, boasting a rich history since its first running in 1968.

Originally known as the Freeway Stakes, it became the Manikato in 1984, honouring the champion sprinter who won it twice.

Elevated to Group 1 status in 1989, it has since become a marquee weight-for-age sprint on the calendar.

Legendary winners include Vain, Rubiton, Sunline, Miss Andretti, Buffering and Chautauqua, while modern stars like Bella Nipotina and Imperatriz have kept the tradition alive.

Imperatriz’s 2023 triumph was historic, completing a clean sweep of Moonee Valley’s four major sprints across consecutive starts.

The race is known for tight finishes, with Chautauqua’s dominant 2015 win a rare exception.

From three-year-old sensations like Sepoy to seasoned champions like Hey Doc, the Manikato has consistently showcased Australia’s fastest horses.

From 2024, it takes pride of place on AFL Grand Final eve.
