It was a massive result for America in the Middle East, one that had nothing to do with geopolitics but everything to do with sport, as the largely unheralded Magnitude stunned the racing world in the Dubai World Cup.
On paper, the race appeared to be Forever Young’s to lose, with the dual Saudi Cup and Breeders’ Cup Classic winner seemingly poised to become the world’s highest prizemoney earner with victory.
As the field assembled at Meydan, few would have doubted Forever Young’s chances, especially given he was out to atone for his third placing in the race the previous year.
For much of the race, there was little to concern his supporters.
Magnitude jumped quickly and took control up front, while Forever Young settled in an ideal stalking position just off his outside, always within striking distance.
The first real sign of trouble came on the home turn.
Although Magnitude had travelled comfortably throughout under Jose Ortiz, it wasn’t until he was asked to quicken on straightening that the race took shape. The American runner kicked nearly two lengths clear, suddenly putting the pressure squarely on the favourite.
Forever Young gave chase, but despite closing to within a length at the finish, the writing was on the wall well before the line, with the Japanese star unable to reel in the leader when it mattered most.
The result delivered both shock and admiration in equal measure.
Magnitude’s victory was a testament not only to the horse but also to trainer Steve Asmussen, who had him primed to perfection, and to jockey Jose Ortiz, whose front-running ride proved decisive.
In one of the world’s richest races, the Dubai World Cup, Magnitude produced a performance that will be remembered as a masterclass in execution on racing’s biggest stage.
