Swettenham Stud has confirmed that leading sire Toronado has been withdrawn from covering duties for the remainder of the current breeding season after suffering a significant infection that has led to lameness.
The Victorian farm said the decision followed advice from some of Australia’s leading veterinarians, who recommended a complete break to give the 15-year-old stallion the best chance of a full recovery.
“Toronado has played a huge role in the history of Swettenham, as well as in the Victorian industry, and we really see him as part of our family. His health and wellbeing come first to everyone at the farm, so this was a straightforward decision,” said Adam Sangster, principal of Swettenham Stud.
“We are very grateful to the understanding shown by all the breeders who had mares booked to him. While it is unlikely he will cover again this season, we are confident that, as a 15 year-old, he still has many promising years ahead of him.”
Swettenham added that breeders with bookings have been contacted and that further updates will be provided as Toronado progresses through his recovery.
