Group 1 star Sepals has bounced back from a nasty leg injury and is set to line up in Saturday’s $10 million Golden Eagle (1500m) at Randwick.
Trainer Cliff Brown revealed the gelding required staples to his near hind leg after suffering a deep cut when he faded badly as favourite to finish last in the Group 1 Toorak Handicap (1600m) at Caulfield two weeks ago.
Brown admitted he initially feared the campaign might be over. “The first two or three days until Wednesday morning I thought ‘We are in a bit of trouble here,’ but from that point on, he has just been sensational,” Brown said.
“He’s in Sydney now and he galloped great during the week so he’ll go to The Golden Eagle with Ethan Brown to ride. He ended up with two staples in his back leg and I just thought ‘What will I do’? But since then he’s really come on.”
Sepals, the Group 1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes winner, is rated a $15 chance to claim the rich four-year-old feature at Randwick.
With Sepals back to full fitness and heading north for one of Sydney’s richest races, all eyes will be on his performance as he looks to add another Group 1 to his growing resume.
