It quite literally is a case of David vs Goliath at Canberra this afternoon.
Gai and Adrian’s Tulloch Lodge brings the unbeaten YALETOWN (Vancouver-Marianne) to Canberra this afternoon for a crack at the Canberra Guineas Preview over 1400m.
He then will be set for the $150,000 Canberra Guineas on 8 March, followed by a shot at Gr 1 level races.
But in his way is a small, locally trained 3YO filly named MOLLY NAILS (Tavistock-Maritimo).
And their clash looks the pick of the day’s racing.
Yaletown led all the way showing all of the famous bone and muscle attributes imbued each training session by Gai and Adrian, on debut at Kembla.
Over today’s trip, he just dominated a maiden field, but a good maiden field at provincial level.
Gai and Adrian often take very talented types to Canberra to get experience and wins under their bet. Golden Slipper bound unbeaten filly Tilianam is a classic example.
She led all way to win at Canberra before going to town and winning and forcing her way into the Golden Slipper field.
It’s unknown at this point if Yaletown is that progressive but certainly today is a stepping stone to the Australian Guineas and Australian Derby honours if he comes through as the stable suspects he will.
BUT….the green as grass little filly Molly Nails, trained by Matty Dale, is as raw as a fresh cut off side beef. She, however, can run like the wind.
Her maiden win at Wagga back in late January had to be seen to be believed.
She sat off the speed back in 4th to the bend over 1200m, but just went bang when asked to and despite shying from the whip and running all over the place she won by a widening near 8 lengths giving the impression this trip will suit a great deal.
And punters have rallied overnight.
A stack of cash has come for her to knock over Yaletown and she was by 10am this morning paying $1.70 with Sportsbet.
This race is on at 2:50pm this afternoon.
