Champion jockey Jamie Kah is making significant strides on the road to recovery after suffering a major fall earlier this month, according to fellow rider Ben Melham. Speaking at Flemington over the weekend, Melham expressed his delight at the progress Kah has shown in recent days as she battles the effects of a heavy concussion.
Melham shared his insights on RSN927’s Racing Pulse, revealing that Kah’s active personality has been a challenge during her mandatory rest period. “She’s supposed to be resting and not watching too much television, but she’s getting frustrated,” he said. “She’s an outdoors type of person and she’s locked up in her room doing her rehab.”
Despite this frustration, Kah’s determination to stay connected to the racing world has seen her sneak in some Racing.com channel viewing, albeit against doctor’s orders.
Kah sustained her injuries during a fall from Flyball in the VRC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) at Flemington on March 11. Since then, she has been heavily sedated to facilitate her brain’s recovery.
Although Melham could not provide a specific timeline for Kah’s return to racing, he emphasized the encouraging signs she has shown in recent days. “The last couple of days have been really good,” Melham reported. “She’s just taking the necessary steps on the doctors’ advice.”
With no set time limits for recovery from brain injuries, Kah’s medical team is focusing on her overall health rather than rushing her return to the track. Melham concluded, “Day by day, step by step, she’ll be ready when she is ready.”
