Trainer Ciaron Maher is confident that Pride Of Jenni is in peak condition as she gears up for her return in the Group 1 Memsie Stakes at Caulfield on Saturday. While race tactics are always a consideration, Maher’s primary focus has been on ensuring the mare’s fitness leading up to the race.
Pride Of Jenni last stunned the racing world with an extraordinary victory in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) in April, where she led by more than 30 lengths mid-race and still won by 6.5 lengths. Although the 1400 metres of the Memsie Stakes may limit her ability to establish a significant lead, Maher remains confident in her preparation.
After a positive gallop on Tuesday morning, both Maher and jockey Declan Bates are pleased with her condition. “I am very comfortable where she’s at fitness-wise,” Maher said. “She’ll just do her thing, and hopefully that’s good enough.”
Pride Of Jenni faces a tough field that includes defending Memsie Stakes champion Mr Brightside, but Maher is optimistic about her chances if she performs at her best.
Pride Of Jenni is the $2.20 favourite with betting apps in Memsie Stakes odds.
