Gai’s Choice has earned herself a trip to Queensland to chase a black type win after a dominant performance at Rosehill on Saturday.
The David Pfieffer-trained mare stormed home to win the SCCF Ken Callander Fellowship Handicap (1300m) by six lengths ahead of Titbit ($8.50) and Brookton Tiara ($12), who took out third in a photo finish.
Sent out $4.40 favourite from barrier one, Gai’s Choice stuck to the rails for most of her run before breaking into a gap in the straight.
It was her second win from as many starts since returning to her Pfieffer after a stint with Brett Partelle.
“I haven’t changed much of what I used to do with her last time but I think maybe she’s just a more mature mare and knows what she’s here for. She’s going great,” Pfieffer said.
The Warwick Farm trainer has his sights set on the Listed Gai Waterhouse Classic (1350m) on Ipswich Cup day on June 16.
“That’s probably the aim for us. We want to make her a stakes-winning mare hopefully,” he said.
Gai’s Choice’s win brought up a winning double for jockey Peter Robl after he took out the JR Turk Handicap (1200m) aboard Air Comet.
He praised Pfieffer for getting the mare back to her peak.
“I think she’s going better than she’s ever gone,” Robl said.
“She’s probably going good enough at the moment that if she’s going to win a Listed race it’ll be in the next couple of runs.
“(The Gai Waterhouse Classic) is the ideal race. She’d be hard to beat.”
