Group l racing continues at Randwick this Saturday where it is Spring Champion Stakes Day. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out five metres from the 1600m-Winning Post; Out four metres for the remainder.
Spring Champion Stakes 🏆: View the Field and Odds for the Spring Champion Stakes
Race 1. (12:35) Tab Highway Hcp (c3) 1600m
I think 3 Proven Class (Bet Now: $26.00 TOP ODDS) is worth an each way ticket. Good return from this mare over the mile at Goulburn when ridden cold from the wide gate and worked home well without threatening. Has run well at Highway level before and has got more upside than most.
11 The Fossil (Bet Now: $13.00 TOP ODDS) is flying for Sam Kavanagh and his consistency was rewarded two weeks ago with a strong win in 1500m Highway at Rosehill. Admittedly he had the rail, which was no disadvantage, and drove hard late to nab them on the peg. Harder here, but he’ll run another positive race.
18 Lord Desanimaux (Bet Now: $7.50 TOP ODDS) has only won the one raced, but he’s a very honest animal for Terry Robinson. Got back and flashed late nearer the inside when a narrow second to The Fossil at Rosehill two weeks back in that messy Highway. Couldn’t back him to win, but a first four threat.
Race 2. (13:10) Midway (bm72) 1400m
2 Always Sure (Bet Now: $7.00 TOP ODDS) can bounce back for Gary Moore. Impressive winner over this track/distance two back before racing at that same set up next time where he was okay but perhaps bogged down by the weight. Has the same weight, but this is a massive drop in depth and looks to map super.
10 Different Strokes (Bet Now: $2.90 TOP ODDS) is a progressive galloper for Kim Waugh who is potentially on the Four Pillars path. Not sure he beat a great deal at Wyong last time but he put them away strongly and was dominant late. Putting together a tidy record and confident he can measure up here.
6 Noble Soldier (Bet Now: $15.00 TOP ODDS) is a progressive animal for Team Price that should appreciate a truly run 1400m. Sat back in the run at Hawkesbury last time and came with a well timed run to get up and score a pretty sharp win I feel. Off that, 1400m is no issue and has the in form Regan Bayliss steering.
Race 3. (13:45) Cerrone (bm78) 2000m
16 Olympic Gaze (Bet Now: $21.00 TOP ODDS) would be a living breathing at the provincials. That said, I think he can win here because there are no stars. I thought he was excellent from the back last Saturday here behind Wairere Falls, a race which was much, much stronger than what he faces here. Up to 2000m, I think he’ll take beating.
3 Yiyi (Bet Now: $7.50 TOP ODDS) is a query at 2000m but is racing really well at the moment for Chris Waller. 12/10 from Collett saw him win a fortnight back at Rosehill. Had the dream run near a slow speed and once it became a sit/sprint, it played into his hands and he was too good. 2000m is the question mark, but he has the Waller polish.
6 Bazooka (Bet Now: $13.00 TOP ODDS) is starting to put it together now and with that in mind, he goes on top. David Payne trained gelding who was struggling to win. He fell in to win at Hawkesbury but since then, he has been quite good. Good at Kembla two back before racing at Rosehill two weeks ago where he chased strongly, just missing out on picking up Yiyi. Like him up to 2000m and is hard to beat.
Race 4. (14:20) Stan Fox Stks 1500m
2 Coastwatch (Bet Now: $2.05 TOP ODDS) is a beauty for Chris Waller. Doesn’t have a turn of foot but is talented, toughs it out and is rarely far away. Impressive winner two back in the Ming Dynasty before going to the Golden Rose where he ran out of his skin when third to In The Congo. Off that, he’ll eat up 1500m, in the right camp and has the A1 form.
5 Akihiro (Bet Now: $17.00 TOP ODDS) is three weeks between runs for Gary Portelli since contesting a Midway here, which on paper is inferior form, but given he was out wide and back, making ground, he was one of the runs of the meeting, and those that made ground out wide that meeting, they dominated last Saturday ie Never Been Kissed, Montefilia. Fair track, hopefully, and he’ll take beating.
3 Hilal (Bet Now: $7.00 TOP ODDS) can bounce back if he found something near his best. He was awful in the Golden Rose. He didn’t handle the pressure at all and caved in quite badly late, finishing well and truly down the track. He gets Tommy back aboard and a drop in depth, so he can improve.
Race 5. (14:55) Roman Consul Stks 1200m
Fitter and back to set weights, I’m quite keen on 1 Sword Of State (Bet Now: $6.50) bouncing back for Jamie Richards. It’s been a frustrating prep for this high class three year old. Resumed in the Heritage when lumping 60kg, doing work in the run…just a messy race. He has the brilliance to bounce back in a big way.
Trekking does look the #1 seed for Godolphin re Everest, but a big performance from 2 Paulele (Bet Now: $2.05) here could change that. He’s 3/3 at Randwick and returns to the track for the first time since an electric win in the Rosebud where he smashed the clock with the big weight. Two runs since have been strong and back to Randwick, he’ll take beating.
9 A Very Fine Red (Bet Now: $13.00) is racing like she will appreciate the 1200m. Mark Newnham trained filly that was an eye catcher late in the Heritage when back and finishing off her race with purpose nearer the inside. 1200m is an unknown, but she is racing as if she will be suited.
Race 6. (15:30) Angst Stks 1600m
Fitter and up to the mile, I think 1 Amrelinha (Bet Now: $4.60) deserves another chance. Jamie Richards trained mare that resumed three weeks ago in the Bill Ritchie. She was never really a winning threat but didn’t mind her finale behind Atishu. Gets to a more suitable trip and is a class runner.
3 Kiku (Bet Now: $4.80) has got upside to come and I think has returned pretty well. Resumed two weeks back at Rosehill. I thought it was a plain ride from J Mac. No real initiative and it was more or less a barrier trial. Good late and is screaming of a horse wanting further, which she gets here. Hopefully can use the gate to advantage.
2 All Saint’s Eve (Bet Now: $13.00) deserves another chance. John O’Shea trained mare that was far from disgraced fresh in the Tramway behind Zaaki. She then took on the boys in the Shannon and only beat one runner home, but was close up behind surprise winner Yonkers. Third up, hard fit now, her best is good enough to give this a shake.
Race 7. (16:10) Silver Eagle 1300m
Is 12 High Supremacy (Bet Now: $12.00) back? Jury was out at the end of last prep but he looked to trial up enormous prior to resuming here, where he was kept safe in betting, but the ride from Nash was just a peach, one of several winners for the hoop for the meeting. He bolted clear late and that run could be a run of a horse potentially on a Golden Eagle path. Keen to see how he goes.
Fitter, up in trip, I want to give 11 Equation (Bet Now: $8.00) another chance. Resumed without a public trial three weeks ago here and just didn’t really get the rub of the green at any stage in what was a messy race won by Triple Ace. Showed good promise in the Autumn, so want to give him another look.
10 Blondeau (Bet Now: $16.00) can be dangerous. Chris Waller trained four year old that resumed behind Triple Ace a few weeks back. Rail hugging ride by Bowman and 200m out looked the winner, but just failed to pick up Triple Ace, but still a good effort. If he can build off that, he’ll take beating.
Race 8. (16:50) Spring Champion Stakes 2000m
2 Profondo (Bet Now: $3.70) has no idea what he is doing, but no doubting he is the best horse in the race. No doubt he was going to win the Gloaming until he shied at the whip use from Robbie Dolan and he threw the race away. 6-12 months time, he’ll make a lovely horse, but I think he still has the scope to be taking this out.
1 Head Of State (Bet Now: $3.60) is the one to beat if Profondo still shows signs of being raw and new to the racing game. That was why he won the Gloaming IMO. His professionalism and race sense was on display whereas the runner up couldn’t put it together. That said, it was still a strong win and he commands respect.
6 Raging Bull (Bet Now: $34.00) is still a working progress for David Payne but the stable won this race last year and the guy knows a thing or two about a progressive younger stayer. He beat nothing at Wyong last time, but he ran good late splits for a stayer and did it being eased down late. This horse has always looked a Spring Champion/Derby horse since day one, so keen to see how he goes.
Race 9. (17:30) The Nivison 1200m
Gee 1 Sweet Deal (Bet Now: $8.00) is well in here and just appears so well placed. John Thompson trained mare that resumes and is in desperate search of Group l glory. I doubt it will be this prep, but she can win some good races in the meantime, including here. Dry track tick, good trials tick and I think she’ll get an ideal cart over via Madam Legend, and on dry ground, I think she’s the best on the program.
It was hard not to focus on Classique Legend, but in his trial, 5 Minhaaj (Bet Now: $6.50) worked home very strongly between runners and produced a lovely piece of work. This former Hayes/Dabernig runner is now with John O’Shea and looks to be enjoying life for the new stable, so watch the market.
6 Athiri (Bet Now: $19.00) should be suited up to 1200m and back to Mares grade. Took on some solid sprinters first up over 1100m at Caulfield. She was near the speed and looked likely on the turn, but when the leader came home in 33.98, those from behind had no chance, including this girl. Hard to beat here.
Race 10. (18:05) Dyson Sprint (bm78) 1000m
3 On The Lead (Bet Now: $2.50) is the one for me. I think the Freedman camp has him flying. Good fresh at Kembla behind Andermatt. Then went to Gosford and looked the winner when presented, beaten narrowly late by Belluci Babe. 1200m on dry, hard fit, he gets his chance to get the win for the prep.
12 Marnix (Bet Now: $6.00) has only won the one race but he has got talent. Last run was March 3 at Warwick Farm when third to Kiku, who went on to become a Stakes winner, so that form reads super for this. Two trials to get ready for his return, so I think he’s ready to go here.
11 Battleground (Bet Now: $16.00) is a loose cannon upstairs but I think he’s racing well. Just needs to relax in the run. Last couple of runs have come at Highway level, where he has pulled his head off in the run and had nothing left for the straight. Tumbles in weight, sits off a fast speed, his best can see him threaten for a first four spot.
