A nine race card has been assembled for Randwick on Saturday. The weather is fine, the track is soft (6) and the rail is out six metres for the entire circuit.
January Cup 🏆: View the Field and Odds for the January Cup
Race 1. (13:15) SKY RACING ACTIVE (BM72) 1100m
Tricky race. Leaning towards 1 Matowatakpe (Bet Now: $6.00 TOP ODDS). Bjorn Baker trained four year old that was ridden quite warm when resuming in a 78 over 1200m here two weeks ago. First 600m was sub 35 and those in front had to tire, including this guy. Drawn to stalk the speed and won’t mind the genuine give in the track. Plus the claim helps.
5 Brazenpine (Bet Now: $13.00 TOP ODDS) looks well placed back to this level for Team Snowden. Has contested a couple of strong 78 races to start the prep, the latest being a few weeks ago when far from disgraced in defeat behind Our Bellagio Miss. 78 back to a relatively thin 72 and third up from a spell, should just about be at peak fitness.
6 Favra (Bet Now: $8.50 TOP ODDS) is a son of Dissident that resumes for Nathan Doyle. Hasn’t raced since July 25 at Rosehill when back and failing to come on behind impressive winner Dancing Gidget. Thought he moved well in a recent Wyong trial and his best is certainly good enough to run a competitive race here fresh at odds.
Race 2. (13:50) TAB HIGHWAY HCP (C3) 1200m
4 Pinnacle Prince (Bet Now: $1.65 TOP ODDS) looks the one to beat quite clearly. His first up win here two weeks ago was outstanding from where he was in the run and the sustained speed he was able to produce was that of a horse who could well be a Country Championships contender. Any hint of improvement from that run and he’ll take this out.
3 Toro Toro (Bet Now: $6.00 TOP ODDS) looks just about ready to win. He’s third up here for Stephen Jones and do feel the rise to 1200m suits. Ran in a Highway over 1100m here two weeks ago and I really liked the way he finished his race off from the back when third to impressive Pinnacle Prince, who looks a Country Championships contender. Think that’s the right form for this.
1200m is short an ideal trip for 6 Texas Storm (Bet Now: $34.00 TOP ODDS) but he can a cheeky race fresh. He has run well at Highway level before albeit over a slightly further trip than this. Two of his three career wins have come fresh and interesting he resumes without a trial, so I think watch the market late and see what it does with him.
Race 3. (14:25) SCHWEPPES (BM72) 1600m
4 Zing (Bet Now: $2.90 TOP ODDS) is nearing a win for Chris Waller. Has done little wrong in both runs back from a break, resuming with a close up third at the midweeks at Warwick Farm before going to the mile here two weeks ago. Thought J Mac rode a perfect race aboard her but second up against a hard fit Bowery Breeze, think that was the difference in the end. Knocking on the door to win one and gets her chance.
9 Fifteen Aria (Bet Now: $3.80 TOP ODDS) is a Fastnet Rock filly for Chris Waller that looks like she will eat up the mile. Debuted over 1300m at Warwick Farm and it was hard not to be impressed by the way she chased down those in front, then fending off late challenges. Bred to be a good one and appreciate the 1600m, so she rates highly.
2 Foxborough (Bet Now: $4.80 TOP ODDS) is a hard fit and in form mare for John Sargent. Comes here after a very positive ride from J Mac saw her lead throughout to win a couple of Wednesdays back at Warwick Farm. Suspect Chris Williams will be positive from the wide gate and with the claim, she’s well in.
Race 4. (15:00) THE AGENCY REAL ESTATE (BM88) 1400m
The 78 to 88 leap isn’t an easy one to take successfully but do feel that 5 All Time Legend (Bet Now: $1.55 TOP ODDS) can do it. He was dominant when resuming with a win here two weeks ago over 1200m. Sat off the speed before edging into clear air and away he went. It was a great return and his splits late were very good. He can beat these for sure.
Well done if you found 10 Dream Circle (Bet Now: $9.50 TOP ODDS) here two weeks ago at the big odds. He looked a midweek class horse at best, but his recent efforts at Saturday metro level were encouraging and he finished right over the top to win and win well under JVO. Question now is can he repeat his winning ways?
2 True Detective (Bet Now: $15.00 TOP ODDS) can be an improver up in trip for Chris Waller. Caught the eye fresh at Rosehill behind Pandemic before racing here where he just got too far back in the run and was never a factor behind Big Parade. Think a rise in trip will suit him and off the first up effort, he’s a knockout hope against these.
Race 5. (15:40) RANVET (BM78) 1500m
6 Brutality (Bet Now: $4.50) looks to be in for a nice prep for Joe Pride. Loved the way he knuckled down to win a couple of Wednesdays back at Warwick Farm, sitting off the speed before getting towards the best part of the track and letting down strongly to score. Harder here, but like him up in trip and has more upside than most.
7 Greek Hero (Bet Now: $4.80) is working up to a win I think. Team Freedman trained gelding that disappointed as favourite in the Nowra Cup two back before coming back to 1400m here. He had the suck run behind the speed and tried hard. Just couldn’t quite get there when fourth to Dream Circle. Not far off a win and finds a suitable race.
Back to 1500m I do like for 3 Come Along (Bet Now: $11.00). He ran over 1800m here two weeks ago, a trip probably just a bridge too far for him, but he stayed on and was sound in defeat behind Amica. Back to 1500m is a big tick, he draws soft, hard fit and racing well. Has to be included.
Race 6. (16:20) HEINEKEN (BM88) 1200m
I’m keen on 7 Handspun (Bet Now: $6.50) running well here fresh for James Cummings. Her record is very consistent and more often than not is around the mark. Resumes off the back of two trials and has looked pretty good each time, notably without the Blinkers. Draws to stalk Big Parade and I think she’ll be strong late.
Can you trust the version of 2 Big Parade (Bet Now: $1.90) that turned up three weeks ago returns here? If he brings that version to this race, he wins again. It was a masterstroke by Mark Newnham to take the Blinkers off. He relaxed so well on speed and once Parr pressed the button, away he went and he was dominant. Repeats that here and he wins again.
11 Pandano (Bet Now: $17.00) looks hard to beat against these. Paul Perry trained gelding that arguably should have won fresh on Hunter Day at Newcastle. Then had a freshen up and raced here three weeks back where he was just off the speed and battled away well in somewhat testing conditions when fourth to Big Parade. Hard fit now, knockout chance.
Race 7. (17:00) JANUARY CUP 2000m
Been waiting and waiting for Mark Newnham to step 11 Fulmina (Bet Now: $5.50) up in trip and he does so here, so for me, this is D-Day for her. Was on her two back when she was beaten over the mile. Stayed at that trip in the Belle Of The Turf where she was again good late, looking for more ground. Gets to 2000m, down in the weights and rain will only help her cause.
2 Spirit Ridge (Bet Now: $2.60) is heading in the right direction for Mark Newnham. Ran in the Summer Cup two weeks back at this track/distance. He looked in a bit of trouble early on in the straight but once he got the gap, he drove through hard and surged to get up and win. Think this race is well within reach for him.
1 Wolfe (Bet Now: $8.50) races best when he gets dry ground and controls from the front, so interesting to see how he goes. Took the sit behind Greysful Glamour in the ATC Cup and that was the end of the race with that mare dominating from the outset and proving much too good. Wolfe was first up, so think he’s got improvement to come, and hoping for a more aggressive steer.
Race 8. (17:40) PRECISE AIR (BM78) 1800m
1 Kiss The Bride (Bet Now: $9.50) looks ready to win now. Was on him at the big odds when racing over the mile two weeks ago here and in a sit/sprint, he couldn’t produce the change up speed but stayed on and was very good. Now getting to a more ideal trip and getting towards peak fitness, think he’s a great gamble against these.
5 Criminal Code (Bet Now: $6.00) is starting to put it together now. Has taken a little while to find his feet from WA now he is with Chris Waller but recent efforts suggest he’s figuring it out. Won two back at Warwick Farm before stepping up to the Randwick 1800m a fortnight back and he chased strongly when second to Amica. He can bounce back.
9 California Longbow (Bet Now: $14.00) can be a big improver at odds. Trialled up like a jet prior to resuming here and on face value, the run was plain, but the way the track played, he had no hope so I’d just put a line through that run. Off the trial, I think he’s come back really well and is a knockout chance.
Race 9. (18:15) TAB (BM78) 1500m
Paul Cave has 12 Bowery Breeze (Bet Now: $5.50) going very well this prep and I think the mare can win again. The bets were well and truly landed with her when she won here two weeks ago. Got a wet track, got a good speed to sit off and a lovely ride from an in form Kathy O’Hara ensured she would get the win. Now she has a win on the board, could well go on with it.
16 St Covet’s Spirit (Bet Now: $7.00) deserves another chance. Good two back behind Bluff’N’Bluster before backing up a week later and you could say she ran a week later, but it was pretty much a barrier trial. J Mac was probing for the run but clipped heels and nearly fell. Total forgive. Back to her Mares grade, she does appeal.
8 Strawb (Bet Now: $5.50) has the talent to blow this field away, but her barrier manners are a real issue for her. She is just that fraction slow to begin and it means she has to settle near the back and make a sustained. That’s what she tried to do at Warwick Farm last time and to be fair, she got very close to beating Brutality in an excellent effort. If she puts it all together, she can win.
