SA metro racing this Saturday heads to Gawler. The weather is fine, the track is soft (5) and the rail is out three metres from the 800m-400m; True for the remainder.
Race 1. (12:55) Cornerstone Stud Mdn Plate 1506m
6 Gosden (Bet Now: $1.65) on top in what looks a two horse race. Resumed at Morphettville on Boxing Day and had to make a sustained run from off the speed, just dying on the run late when a narrow second to Starlite Valley. Better for the run, sits closer from gate one, he’ll do me.
5 Coyote (Bet Now: $4.50) is a fascinating runner. Michael Hickmott trained gelding that resumes, having not raced since July 30 when having his first run for the stable and I thought was a tad plain. Given a good break and thought his recent trial win was a lovely piece of work.
7 Quick Return (Bet Now: $5.00) hasn’t been too bad in two career outings. Beaten a lip on debut at Murray Bridge by Kung Fu Fighting. Then went to Oakbank where he didn’t seem entirely happy on the tight track, which can be the case for a number of horses. Off the debut, he’s in the mix.
Race 2. (13:30) Thank You John Hatch Mdn Plate 1506m
Slightly back in trip I hate for 5 Charm Slinga (Bet Now: $3.00) but he’s got more upside than most. Ran over the mile at Morphettville in a maiden last time out when back in the run and making up really good ground late when third to Race Against Time. That looks the right form for this.
11 Yellow Idol (Bet Now: $2.05) ran second in that maiden mentioned above. She was near the speed throughout and seemed to have her chance but she was only nabbed late in a good effort. Should get a lovely run from the inside gate and for mine, only runs well against these.
4 Yowza (Bet Now: $5.50) has had numerous chances to break the maiden tag but gate one and the claim helps his cause in a thin race. Ran at Naracoorte last time out when copping heat on speed and tried hard, but just felt the pinch late when fifth. Not sure he wins, but one for multiples.
Race 3. (14:05) Tab Mdn Plate 1200m
11 I Am Bene (Bet Now: $2.25) is on debut but I think she’s one of the better bets on the card. Andrew Clarken trained filly that is having start one but gee I was taken by her trial win last week at Strathalbyn where she bolted up under minimal pressure and ran good time relative to the class for the morning. Draws soft, Gatt sticks from the trial, she’ll do me.
3 Dingabledinga (Bet Now: $5.00) is a Team Jolly trained three year old that is on debut. This son of Clangalang trialled at Strathalbyn last week and looked to move quite well when a narrow second to Fore. Tricky gate to overcome, but he looks a likely type and finds a winnable race.
1200m has to be a query with 14 Redwinelover (Bet Now: $9.00), but a jockey upgrade and soft gate helps her cause. Forgive the last start effort at Oakbank when doing too much work from the wide gate and tiring late. Should get a suck run near the speed and is one for exotics.
Race 4. (14:40) Adelaide Plains B'stock (bm76) 2106m
It’s amazing what a win can do for a horse and it’s well and truly turned the career of 4 Ichibansan (Bet Now: $3.00) around. Once upon a time, he was a non winner, but he won his maiden three back at Murray Bridge and since, has gone bang bang at Morphettville, the latest run being the Southern Speed Final. Hard to beat if he holds his form.
3 Resurge (Bet Now: $5.00) is a Team McEvoy trained gelding that is a month between runs since racing at Morphettville when back off the speed and closing his with purpose when third to Call Me Shamus. He does seem to enjoy having his runs spaced so with that, he commands respect.
9 Flow Meter (Bet Now: $71.00) is 12 years of age having start 184 but he’s racing with a healthy amount of zest still. He got back to near last in the run last time out in the Southern Speed Final but he worked to the line pretty well despite never being a winning threat behind Ichibansan. Doubt he wins, but one for multiples.
Race 5. (15:15) Trimboli Services (bm56) 1200m
2 Kungka Maru (Bet Now: $4.00) has only won the one race but has shown talent to suggest that winning strike rate doesn’t truly reflect her ability. Wide no cover at Strathalbyn last time out but battled away strongly when second to Miss Langtry. Bursting to win again and gets her chance here I feel.
6 Wounded Soldier (Bet Now: $21.00) should be strong late here. Ran over 1200m at Strathalbyn last time out where he got back to near last in the run and was never really a winning threat, but liked the way he finished his race off when fourth to Geandge. Hasn’t won in a while but this is a thin race.
5 Olive Grove (Bet Now: $21.00) hasn’t been too bad in three runs back from a break. Runner up in the first two runs for the campaign before going here three weeks ago where he got a mile out of his ground and was never a factor behind Tanja’s Dream. Expecting him to run a much improved race.
Race 6. (15:55) Coopers Brewery (bm82) 1100m
Giving 2 Terbum (Bet Now: $3.40) another chance. Three weeks between runs for Phillip Stokes since racing at this track/distance where he was smashed in betting. He was held up for a few strides, but overall, I thought he had his chance when a close up third to Midnight Storm. Perhaps getting to the outside of horses with clear air, he can bounce back.
7 Spanish Heirloom (Bet Now: $6.00) is a beauty for Travis Doudle. Just found the tempo a bit too hot two back on the Parks track behind Tequila Time. Then went to Gawler when on speed and showed good fight, looking the winner but had to settle for a narrow second to Midnight Storm. Like her at 1100m and has the right racing pattern.
4 Street Life (Bet Now: $17.00) has a good record at Gawler and can bounce back. Resumed at this track/distance three weeks ago where the market took a set against him, suggesting he would need the run and that is how it panned out when down the track behind Midnight Storm. He is a proven performer at this level and higher, so giving him another look.
Race 7. (16:35) Holdfast Ins. Brokers (bm68) 1200m
5 Shellshocked (Bet Now: $5.50) is in a purple patch for the Richards/Moyle camp. Thought it was a very good ride from Voorham to win on Boxing Day. She made sure the gelding wasn’t far away from Chosen Blonde, within range at the top of the straight, and wore him down late given that horse is suspect at the end of the race. Has found winning form, he can hold it.
2 Our Deep Agenda (Bet Now: $8.00) is getting closer to a proper end of prep run I feel. Signs were there last start that he might be looking for the paddock when leading and feeling the pinch late behind Dominus. He must have pleased the stable since to warrant continuing the prep.
8 Crown Harmonium (Bet Now: $12.00) can sneak a first four spot for the Hickmott/Riggs camp. Resumed at Morphettville on Boxing Day and worked home okay from off the speed when fourth to Sparkup, beaten just under two lengths. I think she’s in with a shout if she can overcome the tricky draw because the resumption was a definite tick.
Race 8. (17:15) Gj Civil (bm60) 1100m
You know what you are going to get with 1 Secret War (Bet Now: $2.25). He’ll bounce in front, roll along, and look to give his all. Bolted up at this track/distance fresh before going to Morphettville on Boxing Day when leading and looked home but was nabbed late by Great Leveller. Last bit will test but he’ll look the winner.
6 Ultimate Victory (Bet Now: $6.50) is in the mix for Peter Blanch. Resumed at Morphettville where he had the suck run behind the speed and presented to be the winner, but couldn’t quite finish it off when third to likely type Fighting McLaren. Better for that run under the belt, he’s a definite threat.
4 Mysticano (Bet Now: $13.00) loves racing at Gawler and I think has returned in good order. Ran over this track/distance three weeks ago and worked home okay without really threatening when third to dominant winner Tanja’s Dream. Third up now so hard fit and does have a liking for Gawler.
Race 9. (17:55) Kingsford Hotel (bm60) 1506m
4 Frankel Star (Bet Now: $5.50) is three weeks between runs for Matty Seyers since racing at this track/distance where he had a good run in transit behind the pace before getting clear air and finishing off strongly when a narrow second to Getouttheway. Bursting to win one and gets his chance.
2 Getouttheway (Bet Now: $5.00) won here three weeks ago and it was an impressive win. Sat wide with cover before peeling wider into clear air and unleashing a powerful finale to nab Frankel Star late in a driving go. He only runs well at Gawler it seems so with that in mind, he’s got to be respected.
Interesting placement by the Macdonald/Gluyas camp to run 10 Sadler’s Song (Bet Now: $7.50) against the older horses. Ran here three weeks back against her own age at this track/distance and I thought was a bit on the plain side when fourth to Run And Tell. Gets a suck run from gate one and with the claim, she’s in with a shout.
