The Grafton Cup Carnival continues on Wednesday with the first of the two big days, Ramornie Handicap Day. The weather is fine, the track is soft (6) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
Ramornie Handicap π: View the Field and Odds for the Ramornie Handicap
Race 1. (12:29) Winning Edge Presentations-c2 1600m
1 Sokudo (Bet Now:Β $10.00) has to carry the weight but to counter that, he does boast a fair amount of class compared to this bunch. Outclassed in the Spear Chief two back before going to Ipswich where he was far from disgraced in defeat behind Prospectus, a Saturday metro winner, and a solid one, so that clearly reads well for a Class 2.
It’ll be interesting to see where Matty Dunn goes with 2 Divine Eleven (Bet Now:Β $2.80) given he is also accepted for Eagle Farm, but I would assume is better placed here. In saying that, he did win a Class 1 at Doomben fresh and bets were landed at odds despite sitting wide no cover for the trip. If that hasn’t busted him, he’ll take beating.
9 Lord Avatar (Bet Now:Β $16.00) doesn’t have the runs on the board compared to most engaged here, but he has got ability and I’m convinced he’s racing well. Forget he went around at Kempsey last time out. Wide no cover for the trip and at that track, that is an awful spot to be. Better luck here and an improved showing is on the cards.
Race 2. (13:04) Cpsu Nsw Wage Growth Rural-c6 2200m
6 Oakfield Cherokee (Bet Now:Β $4.60) looks really hard to beat in a race like this. He was hard in the market last time out in the Grafton Cup Prelude and was supported to beat the class runner of the field, Purrfect Deal, but in the end, you can’t substitute class and the mare was much too good. Back to this level, Oakfield Cherokee appeals.
7 Rider In The Snow (Bet Now:Β $20.00) hasn’t exactly done a great deal since arriving in Australia from France, but this is clearly the easiest race he has contested. Had a stack of excuses last time out at Randwick so has been freshened up, trialled okay since and his best would see him spank this lot.
1 Flying Mojo (Bet Now:Β $8.50) is usually thereabouts for Neil Godbolt and despite being poorly weighted, I think he’ll be around the mark. Ran in the Cup Prelude and didn’t disgrace himself at all behind Purrfect Deal, who would be $1.50 in a race like this. He’ll run his usual honest race.
Race 3. (13:39) Good Intent Hotel Mdn 1000m
I’ll take a chance with 6 Schiller Bay (Bet Now:Β $3.30), a Jenny Graham trained gelding that resumes. Hasn’t raced since January 22 when second in an 1100m maiden at Port Macquarie. Trialled well on May 24, but yet to be seen since and didn’t wear Blinkers in the trial. They are on for the return, so to me, that says intent.
5 Lord Bronn (Bet Now:Β $11.00) has the Brett Cavanough polish and commands respect. He’s racing well without winning, his latest run coming on his home track at Scone. Had a suck run behind the speed and was there to win. Just couldn’t quite finish it off. If he gets luck from the draw, he’ll be hard to beat.
14 I Am Spirited (Bet Now:Β $8.00) is a Neil Osborne trained filly that debuted here a couple of weeks ago at the trip. She was big odds but despite that, I thought she ran a very credible race. Gets a significant jockey upgrade, and always have to respect the 2YO’s against older horses.
Race 4. (14:14) Mark Bloomer Transport (c2) 1100m
The trials were a bit iffy, but I can’t ignore the talent 14 War Toy (Bet Now:Β $5.00) and if Les Kelly has him ready to go, he’s a good thing. The market will be fascinating, especially with this stable. If they drift, good chance the horse will run as if it has three legs but if it remains hard in the market and supported, you may as well way to get paid out. Did a very good job in his first prep and stable rarely get it wrong when they cross the border.
5 Alpha Go (Bet Now:Β $4.80) gets the Blinkers back on and that could spark improvement from him. He sat on speed in the Guineas Prelude and battled on quite strongly when third to Swanston. Blinkers on back to 1100m I do find interesting but stable has had great success when they come to this Carnival.
3 Famous (Bet Now:Β $19.00) has had a couple of runs now for Stirling Osland and I think he is sneaky flying. Total forgive fresh at Gunnedah. He then had a month off and raced at this track/distance where he was a real eye catcher late behind Lisa With A Zee. If he’s within range, he can take this out without surprising.
Race 5. (14:49) Feed 'n' Win Hcp (c2) 1100m
The safe option is 11 Lasting Kiss (Bet Now:Β $2.40) for Stephen Lee. Backed with confidence when resuming over 1200m here and I thought she closed off her race with real purpose when second to Volfoni. Gets a jockey upgrade IMO and a fast run 1100m looks right up her alley. Hard to beat.
8 Mon Gypsy (Bet Now:Β $7.50) is a Neil Osborne trained filly that comes through the Volfoni race mentioned above. She got back in the run after a bump at the start. Was never really a winning threat, but she finished her race off alright I thought. If she can get a clean start and settle a pair closer in the run, she’ll be hard to hold out.
A drying track is music to the ears of 3 Belle Of Clonmel (Bet Now:Β $9.50) supporters. Resumed on a bog track at Gosford and couldn’t pick her feet up, really struggling in the conditions behind Miss Jay Fox, who has since run well in town. She’ll hold a forward spot from the draw and be a leading chance.
Race 6. (15:24) Grafton Guineas 1600m
I’ve always had time for 7 Tamilaide (Bet Now:Β $3.10) and despite a step up in grade/depth, I think he is quite capable of measuring up. Given a really ordinary ride from El Issa at Doomben last time out. Just far too negative and left the horse with far too much to do. Did a good job to get as close as he did. Truly run mile with three wide cover…just looks a perfect set up.
Jarrod Austin has a nice three year old on his hands in the shape of 10 Remus (Bet Now:Β $4.50). Been on his back the past two, each time winning in good style, the latest coming at Hawkesbury where he beat up a field which looked to have depth to it. Harder here, but he’s progressive and the mile looks fine.
5 Beckford (Bet Now:Β $17.00) is racing in good form at the moment. Looked in a bit trouble last time out at Tamworth but once he got clear air, he surged hard late to get up and win. He’s done little wrong since joining the O’Neile camp from Kacy Fogden so keen to see how he goes.
Race 7. (15:59) Ramornie Handicap 1200m
I think connections have to realise that 3 Outback Barbie (Bet Now:Β $12.00) isn’t a Group l horse. This is her level and her type of race. Thrown in the deep end in the Stradbroke and didn’t measure up at all, finishing down the track. Better suited in a race like this and she can bounce back hard.
7 Blazing Miss (Bet Now:Β $10.00) is big odds here I feel. Can make a strong case to say she should have won the Gai Waterhouse at Ipswich last time out. Badly held up at a vital stage before eventually getting clear and charging to just miss. Draws to get a lovely run near the speed. Just needs clear air at the right time.
12 Fender (Bet Now:Β $6.50) is the map horse. Ran in the Civic at Rosehill last time out where he had a suck run behind the speed and was there to be a winning threat. Just couldn’t quite finish it off behind Bandersnatch. To me, 1200m is his go in life so back to that trip here, he appeals for sure.
Race 8. (16:34) Grafton Taxis 66423622 (bm58) 1400m
2 Condover Hall (Bet Now:Β $8.00) for me in the get out. He’s a beauty for Neil Godbolt. Seemingly been in work forever but continues to race at a solid level and was rewarded with a strong win over 1400m at Taree last time out under a lovely steer from Looker. Reece Jones takes over and if this becomes a truly run 1400m, he’ll be last man standing.
13 Sailing (Bet Now:Β $4.60) has only won the one race but I think Stephen Lee has her going really well. Ran over 1200m here last time out and didn’t get the rub of the green under Ben Thompson. Badly held up when wanting to build the revs before eventually getting clear and working to the line nicely behind Volfoni. Can win this with better luck.
9 Volfoni (Bet Now:Β $7.00) will need luck from the gate but it’s hard to ignore the first up win over 1200m here. Sat last in the run before peeling towards clear air and unleashing a powerful finishing burst to get the job done. Will need luck, but if he gets it, another win wouldn’t shock.
