The 2024 Championships at Randwick kicks off this Saturday with an absolute belter of a program, headlined by the Doncaster Mile (1600m). Weather is fine, track is heavy (10) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.

1 Espionage (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is a very good juvenile for GaiBott but is a fruit loop upstairs. Hopefully he can bring his best because if he does, he has a few lengths on these I feel. He ran in the Todman where he pulled his head off and didn’t get the rub of the green in the straight behind Switzerland. Tick over trial was strong and in a fast run 1100m, he’ll get every chance to finish over the top.

4 Roselyn’s Star (Bet Now:  $SP.00) could be an absolute jet. Keen to see how he goes for John O’Shea. He led them a merry dance to win a Kenso 2YO race last time out, giving nothing else a look in and pretty much won like it was a barrier trial. The debut was excellent, he has a good racing style…he’ll take running down.

7 Extreme Diva (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is four weeks between runs for Anthony Cummings since racing in the Reisling in search of a Slipper berth but didn’t quite measure up behind Erno’s Cube, beaten just over two lengths in a solid effort. Fresh legs into this, strong late and brings solid enough form lines.

I think there is a good thing here, and she’s value IMO. I speak of 8 Verona (Bet Now:  $SP.00) for Ciaron Maher. She did more than enough fresh here before going to the Epona where it was basically a barrier trial but I really liked the way she found the line and ran through it. She likes Randwick, she’ll eat up 2600m, down in the weights, upside, timing, won’t mind juice in the track…I think she only runs well.

2 Stockman (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is a class runner in the field and he swims, so he does have a set up to run a much improved race. He ran two weeks ago in the Manion Cup where he tried hard from back in the field and did make up headway but was never a threat to Post Impressionist. Better set up here I feel and his best is certainly good enough.

4 Hopeful (Bet Now:  $SP.00) should appreciate a rise in trip. Annabel Neasham trained gelding that resumed three weeks back in the Sky High at Rosehill when on speed but didn’t fire and was very plain late when down the track behind Lindermann. Like him up in trip and he has shown in the past he is talented enough to measure up.

Lot of these are tired and want the paddock. 15 Passima (Bet Now:  $SP.00) doesn’t want that for Ciaron Maher and his maiden win at Warwick Farm was outstanding. He gave them a start and a beating, producing outstanding late splits with 60.5kg to win in a big effort, with around four weeks between runs. Tends to race best on the fresh side, no issue with 1600m and won’t mind juice in the track.

7 Heman (Bet Now:  $SP.00) can take this out. Team Snowden trained three year old that had eyes on the Randwick Guineas but things didn’t work out for him and they have been somewhat behind the eight ball after his Phar Lap effort when back and making up minor headway. Hard fit now and his efforts from the Spring are good enough to say don’t pen him.

5 Tannhauser (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is third up from a spell and should just about be at peak fitness for Chris Waller. He wasn’t too bad in defeat fresh in the CS Hayes behind Riff Rocket before going to the Phar Lap where he was never really a factor behind Zardozi but was good late. I think he’ll love getting to 1600m and he does have a touch of quality about him.

Gee I am a fan of 12 Good Banter (Bet Now:  $SP.00) and I am convinced she has the engine under the hood to measure up. Her run in the Kembla Grange Classic was full of merit after sitting wide no cover. She kept finding the line and finished alongside Tutta La Vita, and we saw what she did in the Vinery Stud. 2000m, wet ground is fine…hard to beat.

1 Autumn Angel (Bet Now:  $SP.00) was scratched from the Vinery last Saturday and comes here with eyes towards the Oaks. This filly won The Kewney at Flemington where she was very good and strong to the line, aided by a 12/10 steer from Zahra. She wasn’t a chance IMO in the Vinery and this looks more her go. Leading contender.

11 Ahuriri (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is a Chris Waller trained filly that is heading in the right direction. She was nominated for the Vinery Stud but I did think this race would be more suitable en route to the Oaks and here she is off the back of some strong efforts at the Provincials, the latest run being a second at Hawkesbury over 1800m. Tick over trial was solid, she’ll be strong late…dangerous.

I thought my futures tickets on 9 Sharp Shock (Bet Now:  $SP.00) was complete confetti given he ran second in the Wildcard and assumed he wasn’t able to get a run. But, he’s here and for mine, he is one of the hardest to beat. He placed in the Newcastle Stakes behind Bandi’s Boy before going to the Wildcard at Scone and surged hard late from last, just missing out on getting the win. He’ll love getting to Randwick, juice in the track, strong late…great gamble.

1 Bandi’s Boy (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is the one to beat, clearly. Just from a price angle is the reason he’s not on top. He has the runs on the board being a multiple city winner and did win the Star Kingdom at Rosehill last Saturday. Generally, the class runners dominate these kind of races, so in that regard, hard to beat. But he’s getting too short for mine. But, he is still very much a leading contender.

I have been hot on 16 Agirlsbestfriend (Bet Now:  $SP.00) for this race and I won’t be dropping off her despite the query being a bog. That said, she did run second on a completely bottomless deck at Tuncurry in a Qualifier and her run against the track pattern was absolutely enormous behind Auzstar. Tick over trial she looked to move well at Muswellbrook and did work well between races recently alongside stablemate Auzstar. I think her best is more than good enough to be dangerous against these.

3 Traffic Warden (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is flying for James Cummings and he does strike me as a horse that reminds me of Anamoe when he was a two year old. He was a dominant winner of the VRC Sires before going to the Slipper where he had zero luck in the straight and you could make a case to say he goes close to winning with clear air behind Lady Of Camelot. He’ll eat up 1400m, and with a more positive steer, he can take this out.

10 Manaal (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is a nice filly for Michael Freedman that is heading in the right direction. She was a strong winner of the Sweet Embrace before going to the Slipper where she was dragged back from the wide gate and loved the way she found the line late in the piece when fourth to Lady Of Camelot. If she’s within range, she has the finale to be dangerous.

6 Fearless (Bet Now:  $SP.00) has relatively fresh legs and has that sense of timing. He comes to 1400m after winning his maiden over 1200m at Newcastle where he looked a good thing on paper and duly saluted, winning impressively. He gives the impression of 1400m being okay, good racing style…knockout hope.

I am really surprised the price that 9 Bella Nipotina (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is. Was she going to beat Imperatriz in the William Reid? No, but she should have run a place. She was given zero hope by John Allen in a very negative ride when fourth. She loves Randwick, she loves give in the track, she gets Craig Williams and for mine, she has always looked like this prep she has been half a run away from fitness. I think she’ll run a beauty and is the each way gamble.

No more debate about champion status if 8 Imperatriz (Bet Now:  $SP.00) wins this. She will be one in my eyes with a win. She has simply been too good for them in Melbourne, where she hasn’t really been dynamic this time in but class has been getting her home. I don’t think she is at the level of what she was in the Spring but she has runs on the board and commands respect.

3 Mazu (Bet Now:  $SP.00) placed in this race last year…is he going as well 12 months on? I am saying no, but he swims and has runs on the board to command respect. He resumed several weeks ago in the Challenge where he sat on speed and tried hard but being first up, condition just gave way late. He’ll love getting to 1200m, wet ground, and I think will be dangerous with a more patient steer.

There are a number of runners I like in this race. On top though is 7 Kovalica (Bet Now:  $SP.00), who I feel is flying for Chris Waller and appears ready to rock and roll. He did more than enough fresh in the Liverpool City Cup before going to the George Ryder where he was right up against the fence, quicksand, and he was still very good late. He’s on track for this and then the Queen Elizabeth but I think the handicapper hasn’t been able to get to him and he’s so well in.

2 Obamburumai (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is an absolute beast. Off the vision I’ve seen of him at Canterbury, he has improved big time since what was seen in the Golden Eagle. That win was something else and the change up speed…it was electric. He is a winner on soft ground in Japan but how he will handle a wet Randwick deck, I am not sure, but gee he looks a star and I am convinced he’ll be in the finish.

8 Detonator Jack (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is the one that appeals if the track becomes an absolute bog given he swims, as seen last year when bolting up in The Gong. He resumed in the Ajax where he seemed to get every chance from the inside gate and tried his guts out but first up, condition just gave way late. Better for the run, right down in the weights, he’s a definite winning chance for mine.

2 Tom Kitten… (Bet Now:  $SP.00) he’s going to suck me in one more time. I do think he has been purely set for this race but I was keen on him running well in the Rosehill Guineas and on face value, he let me down, but he was right up nearer the inside, which was the quicksand, so I think you have to be forgiving. 2400m, likes Randwick, Hippo is back on…he gets one last chance.

1 Riff Rocket (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is the best of the boys and has to be respected. He was wide no cover for the most part in the Rosehill Guineas and was there to feel the pinch but he was actually strongest late and was impressive in winning. He is the Victoria Derby winner so 2400m is no issue for mine and Waller in a Grand Final is always a recipe to be wary of.

8 Noisy Boy (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is a beauty for Todd Howlett. He ran in the Tulloch last Saturday and he kept finding the line in a really good effort when a narrow second to Wymark. I think he’ll have no issue with the 2400m and we have seen the Tulloch be the A1 form reference for this when it comes recent history.

2 Kristilli (Bet Now:  $SP.00) on top but not really a race I want to get involved in. Annabel Neasham trained filly that comes here with fresh legs, having not raced since the Surround when going to 1400m and ran well but the seven furlongs was a bridge too far. Proven track/distance performer on a bog and gets B Shinn.

11 French Endeavour (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is a good filly for Matty Smith that comes back with fresh legs, having not raced since The Kewney back on March 9 where she ran very well but 1600m was a bridge too far back. Likely has eyes on the James Carr, but maps to do no work, she’ll be strong late and handles all conditions.

13 Cigar Flick… (Bet Now:  $SP.00) on face value, she was terrible when resuming on the Kenso, but she was found to be slow to recover post race, which explained the very plain finale. Trialled up like a jet prior and did something similar since. Her absolute best is good enough to be a threat at a big price.

LONG SHOT: Race Five Number 9 Sharp Shock
