Nine races have been set down for Ascot this Saturday for Old Comrade Stakes Day. Weather is fine, track is good (4) and the rail is out seven metres for the entire circuit.

Race 1. (15:24) Bos Civil (Rs1mw) 2200m
6 Soldanelle (Bet Now:Β $SP.00) is on the seven day back up for Stefan Vahala after racing last Saturday over the mile here where she got too far back and was held up at times, but was solid late without threatening behind a really good one, Tin Chooks. Fitter and up in trip, she appeals as one of the leading contenders.
1 Flower In The Wind (Bet Now:Β $SP.00) was a long time out of the winners list but that changed when winning two weeks ago over 2100m here, giving them a start and a beating to win impressively. Now she has that winning feeling again, she can certainly go on with it.
2 Hoist The Colours (Bet Now:Β $SP.00) is one I can entertain for wider exotics. He ran third to Flower In The Wind two weeks back over 2100m here. He sat on speed and gave a very strong kick under McGruddy but couldn’t quite see it through when third. He is a track/distance winner and has a good racing style, which helps his cause.
Race 2. (16:03) Mouritz Air Conditioning & Solar (Bm72+) 1000m
8 Thomas Magnum (Bet Now:Β $SP.00) on top but not really a race I want to get involved in. Team Gangemi trained gelding that comes here on the seven day back up after racing last Saturday at this track/distance when back near last in the run and made up good ground without threatening when close up in defeat behind Rupert’s Empire. More positive ride here, he’ll take beating.
1 Premium Choice (Bet Now:Β $SP.00) is a ripper that has to be respected against these. He was a month between runs when winning here three weeks ago, getting the dream sit behind the speed before angling clear and in a driving go, was too good. Maps ideally again I feel and this is a winnable race.
4 Capital Flight (Bet Now:Β $SP.00) comes through the Rupert’s Empire race from last Saturday where he was wide no cover on speed and he tried his guts out but after doing that work, he just couldn’t quite see it through but stayed on to finish third. If he gets a better run in transit, he can threaten for sure.
Race 3. (16:43) Studco Hcp 1000m
2 The Boss Lady (Bet Now:Β $SP.00) is a quality filly for Michael Lane that resumes. This girl is first up after a very good Spring prep, which ended with a midfield finish in the Champion Fillies behind Keshi Boom. Perhaps better suited over a bit further but has trialled up really well leading in and although she likely spots them a start but should be strong at the end and has class.
3 Barney’s World (Bet Now:Β $SP.00) is first up for Luke Fernie and is dangerous I feel. His last run came on Nov 11 when bombing the start but even allowing for that, he looked a tired horse when last behind The Boss Lady. He is the sprinter here and has trialled up nicely, albeit over 400m at Belmont. Keen to see how he goes.
8 Gold Vancouver (Bet Now:Β $SP.00) hasn’t done much wrong this time in for David Harrison. Dominant win at Geraldton two back before going to Pinjarra when near the speed and she tried hard but couldn’t quite see it through when third to Tenacious Reward. Back to 1000m, back to her own age, she can run a cheeky race at odds.
Race 4. (17:23) Tabtouch - Westspeed Platinum (Rs0ly) 1500m
8 Fortune’s Luck (Bet Now:Β $SP.00) for me. Adam Durrant trained mare that pretty much had a 1400m barrier trial here two weeks ago, getting badly held up in the straight when seemingly having plenty to offer. She is teasing to do something and I think last start was confirmation that a win is near. Hard to beat against these.
7 Yarralea (Bet Now:Β $SP.00) is a model of consistency but she is finding it very hard to win. Looked the winner a fortnight back here when getting the gun run but found one better in Fast Flicker. 1500m is a slight query but with a kind map on the cards again, she should be around the mark.
1 Seeable (Bet Now:Β $SP.00) is third up from a spell and should just about be at peak fitness. He was several weeks between runs when contesting the Fast Flicker race and tried hard but just lacked the race fitness to go with them late in the piece. He is just about hard fit now and his best is more than good enough.
Race 5. (18:00) Perth Stakes 1100m
3 Bustling (Bet Now:Β $SP.00) is the straight bat option for Dan Morton. This guy has done little wrong in two career outings. Strong debut winner over 1200m here before coming back to 1100m three weeks ago when wide no cover and stayed on quite soundly in defeat behind Siren Assault, finishing second. Think with a better run in transit, he’ll take running down.
1 Sir Dreamalot (Bet Now:Β $SP.00) has put it together his past two and is dangerous. Led them a merry dance to win at Bunbury two back before going to 1000m here a fortnight back where he had the sweet sit in transit and finished best in a driving go to win and win well. Good test here, but think he can measure up.
7 Ripper Farooq (Bet Now:Β $SP.00) finished midfield in the Sir Dreamalot race from two weeks back. He was near the speed and seemingly had every chance but he wasn’t beaten far and he was on debut so with good improvement to come, leading juvenile camp, I don’t think you can dismiss him.
Race 6. (18:37) Gimcrack Stakes 1100m
I don’t think 2 Golden Vale (Bet Now:Β $SP.00) can win the Karrakatta but I think she can win this. Simon Miller trained filly that hasn’t raced since the Magic Millions at Pinjarra when wide no cover on speed and tired to finish down the track. I think she is a short course animal and is suited to 1100m, she gets Pike, kind map…she’s the winner.
6 Golden Kathleen (Bet Now:Β $SP.00) could be an absolute jet. Russell Stewart trained filly that hasn’t raced since her debut at Bunbury back on Feb 10 where she sat on speed without cover but was moving with purpose before being clicked up by Poy and away she went to gap her rivals and ran time. She is the filly for the Karrakatta IMO so whether she’s here to play, not sure, but she commands respect.
9 Heavy Metal (Bet Now:Β $SP.00) should appreciate a rise to 1100m. This filly debuted two weeks back over 1000m here where she got back, wide with cover, before angling clear and found the line with real purpose in a good effort behind Sir Dreamalot. Fitter and up in trip, she commands respect.
Race 7. (19:12) Old Comrade Stakes 1600m
This is a fair step up for 10 Tin Chooks (Bet Now:Β $SP.00) but really, he could be one of the more progressive gallopers in WA. He has won three on the bounce, the latest coming last Saturday at this track/distance where he gave them an absolute spanking and won with plenty in hand. He’s heading in the right direction and confident he measures up.
5 Weaponson (Bet Now:Β $SP.00) is two weeks between runs for Dan Morton since racing in the Grandstand Cup over 1500m here where he chased strongly from off the speed but couldn’t quite get the win when a narrow second to Mood Swings. He saves his best for this track/distance and with a more positive ride, he’ll take beating.
8 Media Baron (Bet Now:Β $SP.00) is a knockout hope for David Harrison. He ran over this track/distance two weeks back where he was near last in a very slowly run race and did make up headway but was never really a threat behind Rokanori. Think with a more genuine tempo here, he’ll take holding out.
Race 8. (19:50) Roma Cup 1100m
Great to see gun mare 6 Amelia’s Jewel (Bet Now:Β $SP.00) back at the races in what is her swansong prep in WA. This mare hasn’t raced since the Golden Eagle where she should have gone close to winning but she had zero luck when wanting to get clear behind Obamburumai. Trial to get ready was solid enough and while her GF is The Quokka, she is too brilliant and too good for these I feel.
5 Triple Missile (Bet Now:Β $SP.00) is a very, very interesting runner. Formerly with Lindsey Smith, he now finds himself with Team Williams. His best is G1 quality but he has been hit and miss the last couple of years. That said, he looks to have trialled up enormous for his return and he is looking to impress for The Quokka, so he’s a big market watch.
3 Gemma’s Son (Bet Now:Β $SP.00) is one I can entertain for exotics. He ran two weeks back over 1000m here in the Rock Magic where he got back to near last in the run and did make up solid headway late without threatening behind a good mare, Wild Belle. Not sure I could back him to win but he is a first four threat.
Race 9. (20:25) Peters Investments (Bm66+) 1200m
5 Malkar Pindari (Bet Now:Β $SP.00) is a quality mare for Simon Miller that resumes. This girl did really nice things when last in work, ending her prep with a strong win over 1500m here. I reckon they will want to get blacktype with her and her trial win to get ready was very good. If she gets luck in the run and a drag into the race, good luck beating her I’d suggest.
7 Vampi At Play (Bet Now:Β $SP.00) is a dangerous type here. Neville Parnham trained mare that ran two weeks ago at this track/distance…well, I say ran, but it was a barrier trial. She was luckless in the straight, getting blocked throughout and had no room to move. If the breaks go her way, she can threaten.
9 I’m Eugene (Bet Now:Β $SP.00) has a good track/distance record and I think has returned in solid order. She resumed over 1100m at Narrogin and was an eye catcher from off the speed when second to Star Power. Not sure she is good enough to win a race of this quality that has this depth but can pinch a first four spot.
