The Wagga Cup Carnival kicks off this Thursday with a strong eight event program, highlighted by the $100,000 Wagga Town Plate (1200m). The weather is fine, the track is good (3) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
Race One (12:35) : Keoughs Plant Hire Maiden Handicap 1000m:
Back Me: 2 Decoded (Best Odds: $2.60) is a handy type that resumes for Matty Dale after a three run prep to kick off his career, which ended with a fifth behind subsequent city performer Lord Von Costa. Avdulla rides and he can steer anything home at the moment.
Big Danger: 1 Bonvie Court (Best Odds: $2.90) debuted at Goulburn and loomed to win the race with 200m to go but just died on the run and had to settle for third. Thin maiden here and stable love this Carnival.
Roughie: 3 Snippet Of Gold (Best Odds: $13.00) is a first start for local trainer Gary Colvin. Recent trial wouldn’t fill you with much confidence, but he is trained on the track and this is a strong maiden, so I doubt the stable would run unless there was ability.
Race Two (13:10) : NSW Racehorse Owners Association Maiden Handicap 1400m:
Back Me: 8 I Told Georgie (Best Odds: $2.40) looks to have found an easy kill here. This Danny Williams trained filly comes off the back of a last start fourth in a Randwick maiden on Anzac Day. Only has to bring that form here to win.
Big Danger: 3 Trying (Best Odds: $14.00) debuted at Canberra and worked home alright late in the piece when running third. Horror draw, but looks talented and can figure with luck in running.
Roughie: 12 Maibe She Bites (Best Odds: $19.00) will appreciate the step up in trip after looking one paced last start over 1200m at Wodonga. Has gate speed, so the barrier, I don’t think, will be an issue, and is one to include in exotics.
Race Three (13:45) : The Daily Advertiser Handicap (60) 2000m:
Back Me: 2 Sand Dune (Best Odds: $11.00) ran in the lead up to the Wagga Cup here last start and looked very unlucky when fifth to High Opinion. Massive drop in grade here and only has to overcome the tricky draw to be a leading contender.
Big Danger: 9 Loyal Toast (Best Odds: $9.00) has performed well at his last two starts over 1800m here in slightly easier races. Draws to get the lovely sit off the tempo and looks a definite winning prospect.
Roughie: 8 Seasoned (Best Odds: $31.00) ran over the mile at Goulburn last time out and the slow tempo didn’t help his cause there when fourth to Sungine. First go at 2000m, but gives the impression he will handle it.
Race Four (14:20) : Harrisons Joinery Inglis Bonus Handicap 1200m:
Back Me: 2 Cogliere (Best Odds: $2.80) resumed here after running a cracker in the Inglis Classic behind Twist Tops, who went on to run well during the Championships. That form just reads so well for a race like this.
Big Danger: 1 Flash Fibian (Best Odds: $4.60) ran over 1000m here a month back and despite racing greenly, he was too good for them. Has to improve a touch to win, but he gets the services of Tye Angland from a soft gate.
Roughie: 10 Imitation Game (Best Odds: $10.00) is on debut here for the Matty Dale yard. Didn’t set the world on fire in a recent Goulburn trial, but the stable can get them firing, so check the market.
Race Five (14:55) : Moane Fitzgelrald Constructions Plate (Maiden/Class 1) 1600m:
Back Me: 1 Atlantic Sentinel (Best Odds: $3.70) ran over the mile at Canberra last time out where he sat back in the ruck before running on strongly to finish a narrow second. Only has to bring that here to be a threat.
Big Danger: 12 Say You Didn’tdoit (Best Odds: $7.00) comes here off a last start fifth over the Goulburn mile where she was given every chance in the run but just failed to go on with it. Perhaps a more cold ride could see her attack the line better.
Roughie: 2 Planet Earth (Best Odds: $26.00) ran in that same race Atlantic Sentinel contested and he just had no luck in the run at all getting trapped wide no cover on speed. If he can find cover from the gate here, he is a live chance.
Race Six (15:35) : Hillis Motor Group Handicap (65) 1600m:
Back Me: 4 Dubai King (Best Odds: $7.50) was given a lovely ride to win two back at Pakenham before running a brave on speed second at Bendigo in a handy race. Draws wide, but should roll forward and give them something to think about.
Big Danger: 3 Cheeky Devil (Best Odds: $7.50) drops in grade after running at Canterbury last start where she didn’t get into the race behind Circular. Odds seem a touch of unders, but she has good upside and the bigger track helps.
Roughie: 2 Songspur (Best Odds: $11.00) comes here off a last start placing in a Non-Tab Country Cup behind Fluctuations, so not sure about that form, but his form when trained by Team Corstens would eat this field up. Gets Tye Angland to steer.
Race Seven (16:15) : XXXX Gold Wagga Town Plate 1200m:
Back Me: 14 Count Dekroner (Best Odds: $11.00) is an absolute beauty who doesn’t know how to run a bad race. He ran along on speed in the Prelude and just bolted up, and ran smart time. Tumbles down to the minimum now and looks a great bet at $10.
Big Danger: 2 Unanimously (Best Odds: $5.50) ran in the Bel Esprit (1100m) at Caulfield last time out and tried hard when finishing behind Sheidel. This looks more his level, good draw, Shinn rides…ticks plenty of boxes.
Roughie: 13 Hill Spy (Best Odds: $5.00) has been a revelation since joining the Luke Pepper stable. He flew home last start in a Stakes race at Morphettville behind Daytona Grey in a race where the from was franked through Nostradamus. Needs luck, but if he gets it, he will look the winner late.
Race Eight (16:55) : Quest Apartmens Wagga Handicap (Class 2) 1400m:
Back Me: 1 Ziganui (Best Odds: $3.00) poured the pressure on last time out at Canberra in a race dominated by the pair on speed and he was just too tough in a real drive to the line. I’m hoping that will bring him on and toughen him up.
Big Danger: 10 Kingia (Best Odds: $11.00) was the real unlucky runner here last Tuesday at this track/distance, getting badly held up in the straight and savaging the line when clear to run second. Normal luck here and she will look the winner at some stage.
Roughie: 3 Ribands (Best Odds: $11.00) ran behind Ziganui in that race and just forget he went around given he was back and the two leaders had it to themselves. Draws to sit much closer in the run, and being third up now, he should be ready to fire.
BEST BET: Race Seven Number 14 Count Dekroner
NEXT BEST: Race Four Number 2 Cogliere
VALUE: Race Three Number 2 Sand Dune
