Melbourne Cup 🏆: View the Field and Odds for the Melbourne Cup
Race 1. (12:17) Canadian Club Mdn Plate 1800m
7 Reciprocal (Bet Now: $SP.00) is short enough but he does bring the right form, the strongest form. He comes through the Hill Smith when back near last in the run and made up decent headway late in the piece behind Goldrush Guru, who won the Derby, so the form is A1 and back to this level, he takes a power of beating.
9 Amber Nook (Bet Now: $SP.00) has done little wrong this time in. Just hasn’t won. Latest run came over the mile at Strathalbyn when on speed and tried hard but couldn’t quite finish the job when a narrow second to Sazerac. Tricky gate, but will press forward and run another positive race.
2 I Love This Song (Bet Now: $SP.00) comes through the Sazerac race mentioned above. He got a suck run on the fence but when it came to winding into his work, he was a bit on the one paced side and just battled to the line. The rise to 1800m I like, maps to do no work again…one for exotics.
Race 2. (12:55) Hahn Mdn Plate 1200m
5 Sav On Ice (Bet Now: $SP.00) can bounce back for Darryl Carrison. This guy trialled up really well prior to debuting here several weeks ago where he was back in an on pace dominated affair and while he was never threatening, he kept finding the line in a pretty good effort behind Sabaj. Back to maiden grade and with fresh legs, he’ll do me.
2 Ginger Sinner (Bet Now: $SP.00) is knocking on the door for Team Jolly and commands respect as one of the hardest to beat. He ran over this trip at Balaklava last time out when wide no cover throughout but kept finding, just missing out on the win when second to impressive winner Dunreal. Maps better, hard fit, leading contender.
6 Taking Omaha (Bet Now: $SP.00) is an improving type. This gelding ran over 1100m in a Gawler maiden last time when back in the run and failed to get involved when down the track. He gets the Blinkers on first time, can settle much closer and with the claim, he’s in with a shout.
Race 3. (13:32) Sportsbet Fast Form Mdn Plate 1200m
1 Billy Bones (Bet Now: $SP.00) on top in what looks a two horse race. Clarken/O’Shea trained gelding that debuted over 1050m here when off the speed and doing a little bit of work but trucked into the race and loomed large to win but just couldn’t quite see it through when second to Boltonova. Better for the run and up to 1200m, he takes beating.
6 Sakasu (Bet Now: $SP.00) has had a few chances to break the maiden tag but that said, he’s racing really well. He ran over 1350m at Strathalbyn last time out and worked home with real purpose late in the piece when second. Back to 1200m I find interesting, but he’ll be strong late and can certainly win.
12 Lunessa (Bet Now: $SP.00) will likely put herself on speed and take running down. She did that over 1250m on the Parks track last time and gave a decent enough but the end of 1250m just found her out. Hopefully with a more economical run in transit, she will be hard to hold out.
Race 4. (14:10) Aceit Transport Solutions Hcp (C2) 1600m
9 One Sky Above Us (Bet Now: $SP.00) gets the nod for me but not really a race I want to get involved in give the lack of depth and her recent efforts. She ran over the mile at Strathalbyn last start where she got a fair way out of her ground and while she was never a winning threat, she did keep finding the line in a good effort behind track specialist Hobo Bob. If she’s within range, she has the finale to take this out.
2 A Touch Frosty (Bet Now: $SP.00) is a Peter Hardacre trained gelding that resumes. He is first up, having not raced since July 20 on the Parks track when struggling on wet ground and struggling over 2250m. Been given a good break and first up at the mile, to me, signals some form of intent. Commands respect.
8 Raw Grunt (Bet Now: $SP.00) is one to be entertained for Richards/Moyle. He has been kept on ice, having not raced since Sep 28 when down the track behind Sacred Kenshi over 1950m on the Parks track, not pulling up 100%. Given a mini break and a tick over trial was quite good.
Race 5. (15:22) San Remo (Bm64) 1800m
6 Starts Now (Bet Now: $SP.00) looks to have returned really well and the rise to 1800m is ideal. Ran over 1700m on Gawler Cup Day and kept finding the line when second to impressive winner Esky. He was only second up there so with room for improvement and up to 1800m, rates highly.
8 Divine Fire (Bet Now: $SP.00) has a good racing style and is hard fit after racing over 2050m at Strathalbyn when attempting to lead throughout and giving a solid enough but couldn’t quite see it through behind Cours Vite, finishing third. She was 1550m to 2050m there so she has that run under the belt, which holds her in good stead for this.
7 Sundogg (Bet Now: $SP.00) is just over a week between runs for John Hyam after racing last Saturday over the mile here when attempting to lead throughout but did a bit too much work on speed and just felt the pinch late in the piece. The win prior at Gawler was good and with front end control, he’s a knockout hope.
Race 6. (16:02) John Letts Cup 1800m
I am a bit surprised that 2 Beltoro (Bet Now: $SP.00) is around double figures. He resumed over 1400m at Caulfield where he looked in need of the run off the parade and that’s how it panned out when down the track behind Poison Chalice. Tick over trial win was sharp, up to 1800m and fitter, with class, I think he’ll run a beauty.
1 Air Assault (Bet Now: $SP.00) was a super winner of the Balaklava Cup three back but his two subsequent runs have been a bit on the plain side, the latest run at Caulfield in the Moonga when near the speed and was a beaten horse on the turn. Back on the home deck and up in trip, miles back in grade/depth, he appeals.
10 Zarkana (Bet Now: $SP.00) lacks the class of some of these but she’s hard fit and racing well. Last few runs have come over the mile, the latest being here when off the speed and was a bit one paced in the run to the line but kept on in a good effort. The rise in trip is fine IMO…not sure she wins, but a first four threat.
Race 7. (16:47) Peter Elberg Funerals Hcp (56) 1050m
5 Foster Street (Bet Now: $SP.00) has been sneaky good his past couple and I think with good speed in front, he can sit back and launch over the top. He ran over 1400m on the Parks track on November 11, getting a fair way out of his ground but his finale in defeat was solid behind Thermodynamic. He’ll be spotting them a start but should be strong late.
1 Alpha Flight (Bet Now: $SP.00) is knocking on the door to win. He has placed in his past three, the latest at Balaklava over 1050m when near the speed and was there to win but couldn’t quite finish the job when third, beaten three lengths. Good racing style and this isn’t an overly deep race.
8 Revolution Belle (Bet Now: $SP.00) is a daughter of Russian Revolution that resumes for David Jolly. She is first up, having not raced since June 10 at Gawler when finding wet ground and was fair without setting the world on fire behind Jive Baby. Maps to do no work and her best is good enough to be dangerous.
Race 8. (17:27) Piper Heidsieck Champagne (Bm62) 1200m
2 Jilladora (Bet Now: $SP.00) will put herself out the back and launch late, like she did last time out at Penola where she got back to near last in the run but charged late when a close up third to Miso. If she’s within range on the turn, I think she has the finale to wear them down.
9 Lapilli (Bet Now: $SP.00) is a Team Jolly trained mare that resumes. This girl is first up, having not race since June 8 when wide with cover and seemed to get a decent enough run in transit but just couldn’t quite see it through behind Hot Off. Trial win to get ready was sharp and this isn’t a deep contest.
11 Pretentious Lass (Bet Now: $SP.00) is one that can be entertained as a first four threat. She ran over 1500m here last time out and was okay in defeat but I do think 1500m at this level was a bridge too far for her. Back to 1200m, I think she’ll get back to near last but can launch late.
Race 9. (18:10) Sportsbet Same Race Multi (Bm62) 1200m
3 The Journo (Bet Now: $SP.00) gets the nod for me in the get out. This gelding resumed with a bang over 1050m here, giving them a start and a beating in an electric performance, producing a brilliant finale to win and win well. Tricky gate, but the lead for me is Jacob Opperman rode a couple of these last start and sticks with this guy.
4 Give Some Lip (Bet Now: $SP.00) looks to have returned well and commands respect for Clarken/O’Shea after resuming over 1100m here when back and closed off with purpose when second to Vintage Star. Fitter, up in trip, can settle closer, takes beating.
13 Dunreal (Bet Now: $SP.00) looks like that he has an engine under the hood. He debuted at Balaklava where he was green and raw to the caper but the last 100m, he savaged the line and was impressive in winning. He has plenty to learn but keen to see how he goes.
