A Cox Plate berth awaits the winner of the Feehan (1600m) at the Valley this Saturday and the Group ll feature highlights a fab nine race meeting. The weather is fine, the track is soft (7) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
Feehan Stakes 🏆: View the Field and Odds for the Feehan Stakes
Race 1. (12:30) Pfd Food Services Hcp 1500m
3 Sandy Prince (Bet Now: $2.70 TOP ODDS) is a progressive animal for Team Hayes that can win again. He has won his past two, breaking the maiden tag at Moe on testing ground before proving that was no fluke with a dominant win at Sandown Hillside in a race where the depth looked solid. Happy to be in his corner.
9 Venting (Bet Now: $5.50 TOP ODDS) looks to have good ability. Danny O’Brien trained three year old that debuted a few weeks back at Bendigo. The market thought he was there for a prep run, a key drifter in betting, but nobody told the horse that because he powered clear from off the speed for a good win. Interesting to see if he can develop into a Derby horse, but that aside, he’s above average.
2 Rock Artist (Bet Now: $13.00 TOP ODDS) likely leads this field up for the Keys camp and will give a bold sight. Did too much work on speed in the McKenzie last time and tired late behind He’s Xceptional. The query with him is 1500m, but on speed is certainly no disadvantage at this track.
Race 2. (13:05) Drummond Golf (bm78) 1600m
Happy to stick with 8 Mr Brightside (Bet Now: $2.20 TOP ODDS). Team Hayes trained gelding that is looking to make it four on the bounce. Last couple have come at Sandown, the latest seeing him tucked in behind the speed before getting an inside split and going through his gears like a nice horse, winning impressively. He can continue his winning ways.
Fitter and up in trip are two big ticks for 15 Worsfold (Bet Now: $6.00 TOP ODDS). He was several weeks between runs and back in trip when racing at Sandown last time out and worked home well from off the speed when fourth to Nikau Spur. Has a soft gate to use and gets in pretty well after the claim.
The gate makes things tricky for 3 Chief Altony (Bet Now: $7.50 TOP ODDS) but he’s racing well. You could say he ran last Wednesday at Sandown but it was pretty much a barrier trial for him. He was in a pocket for the entire straight when seemingly bolting, but couldn’t get a crack at them. The draw will mean he gets clear air. Just depends how far back in the run he gets.
Race 3. (13:40) Inglis 2022 Yearling Sales 1200m
Very interesting runner is 6 Taunting (Bet Now: $3.20 TOP ODDS), resuming for Michael Hickmott. This juvenile had a three run prep in the Winter to start his career, winning two of three. Visually, looked very good, but the second win, at Gawler, he was helped by a severe bias. But, have to respect the stable, and he looked great in a Murray Bridge trial win.
7 Mynumerouno (Bet Now: $13.00 TOP ODDS) looks a smart three year old for Nick Ryan and confident he can measure up here. Ran over 1200m at Sandown last time out where he took a little while to get into his work but was very strong late in getting the win. He’s got more to come and does have residual fitness under the belt.
5 Athelric (Bet Now: $10.00 TOP ODDS) looks to have returned well for James Cummings. Resumed two weeks back here in the McKenzie when chasing a hot speed and kept finding the line in a good return when third to He’s Xceptional. It’ll be interesting to see how that form stacks up, whether that has busted some runners or they’ll bounce off it.
Race 4. (14:15) Powerflo Solutions Hcp 2040m
9 Degraves (Bet Now: $3.70 TOP ODDS) deserves another chance. Impressive Australian debut win at Flemington before having a mini freshen up. Raced over 1500m here a fortnight back and 600m out, it was no betting, he looked home, but the brutal tempo saw him tire late and miss a place. Rise in trip I like and I think the big tick is that there is rain forecast for Friday and Saturday. 0/4 on dry ground and clearly has a preference for getting his toe in.
8 Heart Of Puissance (Bet Now: $4.80 TOP ODDS) was scratched from Kembla last Saturday due to being lame but runs here with wet ground on the cards. Maher/Eustace trained stayer that resumes, having not raced since May 22 when bolting up at Flemington over 2500m. Good wet track stats and has trialled up well in readiness for his return. Leading contender.
4 Dark Dream (Bet Now: $26.00 TOP ODDS) can win this without surprising. Had trialled/jumped out really well prior to resuming at Caulfield when close up behind King Magnus. Then raced there again over the mile and didn’t get much luck in the straight behind Hi Stranger. The forecast for rain is music to his ears and that can spark him into positive form.
Race 5. (14:50) Mcewen Stakes 1000m
If 8 September Run (Bet Now: $4.20) is within range, she has the finale to beat these and beat them comfortably. Mixed Autumn prep for her. Resumed with a slashing second in the Lightning and was amazing here in the William Reid but the two runs outside that were pretty plain. Trials leading in have been strong and a fast run 1000m on a wet track looks right up her alley.
Great to see 3 Portland Sky (Bet Now: $2.80) back at the races. Oakleigh Plate winner resumes for Matt Laurie, having not raced since the Autumn when second in the William Reid behind Masked Crusader, and we saw what he did last Saturday, never mind the TJ Smith. That form is A1 and he looks to have come back in good order based on a recent trial and jumpout.
4 Bold Star (Bet Now: $20.00) is a Richards/Moyle trained sprinter that resumes. He is not quite up to Group l level but this looks his go in life. 1000m/1100m second/third tier Stakes races. Comes here with one soft trial under the belt but won’t mind give in the track and should be strong late.
Race 6. (15:30) Atlantic Jewel Stakes 1200m
Very keen to see 8 Argentia (Bet Now: $3.70) resume. Quality filly for Team Freedman that resumes. Daugher of Frankel that debuted down the Flemington straight in June when letting down powerfully from off the speed to get the job done and smashing the clock in the process. Trial/jumpout was impressive and she comes here ready to rock and roll.
7 Zouzarella (Bet Now: $8.50) looks a good prospect for the Freedman camp. Was good support for her early prior to her debut here two weeks ago before being a significant drifter late. To those who waited, they were rewarded because she produced a strong finale from off the speed to win. No place to hide here, but at least she has winning experience at the track.
9 Literary Magnate (Bet Now: $5.50) is a Matty Williams trained filly that resumes. She had a two run in the Autumn to start her career, winning impressively on debut at the Bool before going to the Showdown at Caulfield when a game second to Finance Tycoon in a really good effort. Liked a recent jumpout, she handles wet ground and will lob into a lovely spot from the draw.
Race 7. (16:10) Chautauqua Stakes 1200m
14 Bella Nipotina (Bet Now: $4.00) lacks the class of some of these, but the set up just looks ideal for her. Led, got control, and clung on to win three weeks ago at Caulfield under Josh Richards in a Mares race. Lobs into a gun spot off a hot speed with Craig Williams steering and for mine, she’ll only run well.
11 Pintoff (Bet Now: $4.40) is a beauty for Richard Cully. Comes here several weeks between runs since leading throughout to win the Bel Esprit. You could say it was a gift given he led and walked them before dashing home, but you have to make your own luck and with his racing pattern, he indeed does that. Hard to beat.
1 Dalasan (Bet Now: $18.00) has a fair bit on these re class and that will carry him a long way. Resumes after an interrupted start to his Spring, where he was down to resume in the Spring Stakes but got injured and has been kept on ice, instead resuming here. The set up is plain, but he has class and won’t mind give in the track.
Race 8. (16:50) Feehan Stakes 1600m
4 Superstorm (Bet Now: $5.50) on top for me in what looks a solid edition of the Feehan without jumping up and down. First run for the new camp came two weeks ago here in the PB Lawrence and I loved the way he closed off his race behind Sierra Sue in a good return. This will either be second up syndrome for a third up bounce back or he’ll bounce off the return and prove very hard to beat.
11 Elephant… (Bet Now: $4.60) just how good is this Kiwi? Australian debut came over 1400m three weeks back at Caulfield where he was backed with confidence late and #TeamThey were spot on. He bolted in and was impressive in good time. Clearly a harder assignment here but you don’t know how good a horse is til they are beaten.
7 Nonconformist (Bet Now: $13.00) is a Grahame Begg trained five year old that should improve big time up in trip. He resumed in the PB Lawrence where he was specked to win the race and I thought did enough behind Sierra Sue to suggest he’s come back well. This run will be a decent guide as to what level he can reach, whether he can aim at the Cups or just stick to this level.
Race 9. (17:25) Ladbroke It Hcp 1600m
IMO, Kathy O’Hara is the only rider that gets the best out of 9 Toryjoy (Bet Now: $12.00), but in saying that, a mare that likes to roll on speed and fight, a perfect rider for that kind of horse is Froggy and he’s on, so at odds, I’ll speck her each way. Hasn’t raced since mid July over 1800m at Rosehill when attempting to lead throughout and gave a solid kick but tired late when third to the then in form Steely. Liked the tick over trial and back to the mile, she’ll run a bold race.
2 HI Stranger (Bet Now: $4.40) is three weeks between runs since getting the job done over the mile at Caulfield. He had to dig in late to get there but eventually did to make it two wins on the bounce. No Effort, who ran third, came out to win the Heatherlie last Saturday, so the form reads very well.
4 Viral (Bet Now: $7.50) has found winning form for Danny O’Brien and can win again. That win came two weeks ago over 1500m here. It was a peach from Williams that saw him get the win, saving ground nearer the inside and showing good ticker late to fend off Skyman. 1600m should be fine and is hard to beat.
