A monster ten race card will be run and won at Doomben this Saturday, with the first to get under way at a tick over 11am. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out two metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (11:10) Mekka Raceday Handicap (70) 1350m
7 Deitch (Bet Now: $3.70) is a gelding for the Stuart Kendrick stable who doesn’t have the greatest of winning strike rates, but he is always thereabouts and picks up a cheque for connections. He ran over 1200m at the Sunny Coast last start where he sat on speed and fought hard all the way but had to settle for second to Miss Dubois. Up to 1350m looks ideal and he maps okay.
4 Really Reilly (Bet Now: $7.00) is a handy type for the Steve O’Dea camp who resumed over 1200m here at the midweeks on July 12 on a day where it was hard to make ground but I really liked his effort late behind Jomar’s Element. Up to the 1350m is perfect, he goes well second up and draws a sweet gate.
6 Bells Of War (Bet Now: $17.00) might not be a leading chance here, but for value and exotics, I think she can be included. This mare ran over 1200m during the Grafton Carnival where she got a mile back in the run and worked home with real purpose when fifth to Havasay. Draws to get a soft run nearer the inside and McGuren rides.
Race 2. (11:47) Country Music Raceday Handicap 1050m
3 Too Easy Bro (Bet Now: $15.00) is a Helen Page trained youngster who debuted on his home track at the Gold Coast a few weeks back and showed really good speed throughout to lead all the way under Luke Rolls and ran decent time for the meeting. Page doesn’t send the horses to city grade straight away unless she thinks they can measure up. I’ll trust her judgement.
10 Felino Bel (Bet Now: $17.00) is a Bel Esprit filly that resumes for Team Guy. This filly debuted with a sharp win at Grafton before racing here and finishing off okay when third to Ruby Red Heart. Trial here at Doomben was quite encouraging, she goes well fresh and I think she’ll take some beating.
12 Suerte (Bet Now: $23.00) is a talented filly that resumes for the Craig Stott camp. This girl kicked off her career in the Autumn with two runs on her home track at the Sunny Coast, resulting in a third and then an all the way win. Ran really good time when winning and was immediately tipped out so she interests me here because I always like horses being spelled after a win.
Race 3. (12:22) Canadian Club Handicap (75) 1050m
Case of waddling your finger and hoping for the best. Landed with 8 Nardoo (Bet Now: $15.00). Brendan Mackay trained sprinter that ran a couple of times during the Grafton Carnival, winning over 1100m before a game fourth to Havasay over 1200m. Back to the 1050m looks perfect, should spear over and take some beating.
1 Misery (Bet Now: $4.50) hasn’t raced for four weeks since racing over the short course at the Sunny Coast where he sat near the speed and fought on strongly but no match for the Godolphin sprinter Badajoz. That form surely reads well for this, adding that he draws well and gets the claim.
18 Stellarcraft (Bet Now: $12.00) is a nice type for David Murphy on the seven day back up after racing over 900m at the Gold Coast last Saturday where he was given a sweet trip in transit by McGuren and looked the winner but the Don’t Play Around just got the nose down inside him to win. He has run well in town before and is one to include in multiples.
Race 4. (12:57) DA Ernst Handicap 2000m
1 Loophole (Bet Now: $14.00) is on the seven day back up for Chris Waller and he definitely interests me here. He trialled up okay prior to racing last Saturday over 1800m at Randwick where the tempo was clearly against him and he really had no hope the way the race was run. Finds a very thin race here. Surely he wins.
4 Monteux (Bet Now: $8.50) had been okay in a couple of runs back from a break for the John Meagher camp but he got the win on the board last time out over the Sunny Coast mile where he was ridden nicely by Bridget Grylls and found plenty when challenged. Has won up to 2400m, so the distance is no issue and he has upside.
11 Brigadier (Bet Now: $13.00) is a SA raider for Wayne Walters who comes through the Get On The Grange race here three weeks ago and I thought his effort in defeat was pretty good considering he was wide for most of the trip and did some work in the run, and that effort just told on him late. With better luck here, he can threaten.
Race 5. (13:32) NFIA Plate (Class 3) 1600m
15 Sweet Adaline (Bet Now: $3.70) looks hard to beat here for Desleigh Forster. She comes through the Miss Dubois race at the Sunny Coast a fortnight back where she got a mile off them in the run and never really looked like winning but her final 200m was excellent. Draws to sit much closer in the run and Lloyd takes over.
13 French Toast (Bet Now: $9.50) is a talented filly for the Vandyke camp who debuted with a gritty win at Ipswich before going to the Sunny Coast where she tried hard once again but had to settle for a narrow second. Not blessed with the greatest amount of ability, but one thing she does has is ticker, something that can’t be said about some of these.
16 Stella Gris (Bet Now: $20.00) can be a hard one to trust but now that she has that winning feeling, she can go right on with it. Given a lovely run off the pace last time out at the Gold Coast and once she presented, it was game over. Now her confidence is up, she is certainly capable of beating these.
Race 6. (14:12) Limes Hotel & Rooftop Bar Handicap 1600m
9 Bergerac (Bet Now: $11.00) deserves a crack in town for the Tregea camp. He is on the quick back up after racing on his home track at Toowoomba last Saturday where he was crunched late in betting and despite getting a fair way back in the run, he produced a brilliant finish to win narrowly but impressively. Keen to see what he does here.
8 Winning Kiss (Bet Now: $7.50) is a talented filly for the Lindsay Hatch yard who hasn’t raced since June 24 during the Rocky Carnival where she raced over the mile and looked to have a suck run behind the speed. Presented at the right time but had to settle for second to Real Mystique in a race where the form has been good. Harder here, but stable should always be respected in town.
2 Heart Skip A Beat (Bet Now: $11.00) rises a fair bit in grade/depth but I think she can measure up for Liam Birchely. She hasn’t raced since June 28 here when parked near the speed and looking to travel well throughout but just not quite finishing it off when second to Fit For Purpose. Does like Doomben and maps okay. Just hope she gets cover.
Race 7. (14:52) Smirnoff Pride Handicap 1600m
5 Reset Me I’m Wild (Bet Now: $6.00) isn’t the most brilliant horse but he is two for two and has been hard in the market both times so clearly the punters know more. Debuted on the Pakenham Synthetic and was very good in winning before being freshened up and racing at the Gold Coast a fortnight back when sitting on speed and looking beat several times down the straight but kept finding. That effort tells me he’ll eat up the mile here.
4 Natural Black (Bet Now: $6.00) is bursting to win another race but he just can’t quite crack it to greet the judge. Looked as if he was going to last time out at the Sunny Coast but couldn’t peg back and hold out the finale of Miss Dubois. Up to the mile and back to his own age is perfect. rates highly.
9 Gypsy Miss (Bet Now: $12.00) is a consistent filly for the Stuart Kendrick stable who is never far away from the action. She ran over this track/distance on July 12 where she had a beaut sit off the speed and loomed large to win but she couldn’t quite finish it off against the older horses. Another back to her own age and is down in the weights.
Race 8. (15:32) Spring Racing @ BRC Handicap 1350m
3 Steel Zip (Bet Now: $13.00) is an absolute ripper for the Pat Duff yard. Eye catching return here in the Healy behind Burning Passion before going to the Ramornie where he got a mile back in the run but again worked home with purpose behind Calanda. Should be close to peak fitness now third up from a break and he finds a very winnable race here.
5 Ruling Force (Bet Now: $17.00) is better suited over a bit further but I think he can run a race here fresh. He hasn’t raced since last April when finishing midfield behind Morendi. Been tuned up with a couple of trials, the latest resulting in a win in fast time. He is a definite market/yard watch.
13 Comacina (Bet Now: $26.00) is a talented gelding for John Meagher who trialled up well prior to resuming at the Sunny Coast a fortnight back where he got a mile off the speed but I liked his finish behind surprise winner Aomen. He is a winner second up and draws to be much closer to the tempo.
Race 9. (16:12) #bneraces Plate 1200m
1 Prioritise (Bet Now: $3.90) looks the one to beat here. This race comes back to 1200m and looks ideally placed. He ran over 1350m here a fortnight back where he did a power of work from the wide gate and the effort just told late when fourth to Care To Think. Draws to do no work and rates highly.
15 Saxton Rock (Bet Now: $11.00) is a talented two year old for the Matty Dunn camp who has been racing very well in recent times but just can’t quite crack it for a win. Last couple of runs have come at the Sunny Coast and both times he has bumped into Bring It Home Pop. That horse isn’t here and a fast run 1200m will suit this youngster ideally.
8 Mishani Sleuth (Bet Now: $8.50) is an above average conveyance for the Chris Anderson camp who resumed over 1050m here last Wednesday and she somewhat defied the pattern of on pace when producing a brilliant burst from the back to round them up and win quite comfortably. Draws nasty, but on that run, have to include.
Race 10. (16:47) Events @ BRC Handicap (80) 1200m
Leaning the way of 3 Three Sheets (Bet Now: $8.50). Jeremy Sylvester trained galloper who had a pretty good campaign in Grafton. Kicked it off with a fast finishing second to Termele in the John Carlton before going to the Ramnornie where he again got back but finished off with purpose late behind Calanda. This looks a winnable race.
She hasn’t won for a while but 5 Espiritu (Bet Now: $9.00) finds such a winnable race here. She comes through the James Kirby on Grafton Cup Day where she had a nice sit just off the pace and wasn’t far away when a close up third to Johnny Roo Boy. Drops miles in depth and gets Lloyd steering.
20 Barnsley (Bet Now: $16.00) was unlucky not to win at the Sunny Coast two back before backing up six days later at Saturday grade when doing work in the run and fighting on when fourth to Stella Ombra. Right down in the weights and overall, this isn’t a strong race, so he should take some beating.
