A strong nine race card has been assembled for Mornington on Sunday where it is Ansett Classic Day. The weather is fine, the track is heavy (9) and the rail is out two metres for the entire circuit.
Ansett Classic 🏆: View the Field for the Ansett Classic
Race 1. (13:25) ASHLEY HOLLOWAY (BM70) 1200m
I’d love to see Currie be positive here aboard 8 Oh Please Dianna (Bet Now: $4.40) and get the drag over via Special Snap. If that eventuates, it takes care of the wide gate and she clearly becomes the one to beat. Resumed at Sandown where she had to make a sustained run and the effort just told late when third to Beautiful Bee. Hard to beat with upside.
4 Special Snap (Bet Now: $2.35) will look the winner for a fair way. James Cummings trained mare that attempted to lead throughout at Bendigo last start and she did give a really good kick from the front, only to be bloused late by proven city performer Goldofix. Olly jumps aboard, should land near the front and prove hard to get past.
2 Birdsong (Bet Now: $7.50) is an interesting runner. Former Kiwi that makes her Australian debut for the Michael Moroney team. Showed good promise when racing in NZ, winning three of five, including a 72 race, so she gets in well in a 70 race for her Australian debut and the two jumpouts to get ready have been encouraging.
Race 2. (14:00) TOTAL ANIMAL SUPPLIES (BM70) 1500m
1 Fudged (Bet Now: $2.80) has really found a purple patch in her form and I think she can continue that here. She has won two of her past three, the latest of those wins coming at Sandown when on speed and she was there to be run down, but showed good ticker late to fend them off and win. Looks to get a good run near the front and will take some catching, especially with the claim.
3 Metronome (Bet Now: $3.10) is the one with upside and progression compared to most engaged here. Was 1100m to 1500m and a month between runs when bolting up here last time out, aided by a lovely ride from Beau Mertens just off the speed and she was strong late in winning. You’d think there is more to come and rates highly.
5 Miss Polanski (Bet Now: $7.00) is the map horse. This mare has found winning form and could well hold it. Won at this track/distance last time out and was very good in winning I thought given she was wide no cover for the trip and was entitled to drop away, but kept finding under pressure and was too good. Harder here, but have to respect what she did last start.
Race 3. (14:35) GLENN MAYNE (BM70) 2415m
8 Vuni (Bet Now: $4.20) on top, but not a great deal of confidence. In saying that, he is a last start city winner, and an impressive winner at that when winning over 2400m at Sandown under a lovely ride from Will Price, who remains on for this afternoon. Can handle a wet track and remains down in the weights. Hard to beat.
2 Light Pillar (Bet Now: $5.00) deserves another chance. Maher/Eustace trained stayer that on face value was pretty poor at Bendigo last time out, but he was found to be lame post race so there were clear excuses for him. The claim for Lafferty certainly helps and any hint of what he produced prior, he’ll go close to winning.
This is one of the easier races that 1 Red Alto (Bet Now: $26.00) has contested in some time. He has been struggling for form for a little while but if he’s going to find some positive form again, won’t really get a better chance than here, and with the claim for Cartwright, plus a touch of cushion in the track, an improved showing is on the cards.
Race 4. (15:15) PATRICK G CAREY RACING (BM70) 1000m
Fascinating runner here is 5 Mayan (Bet Now: $2.50), a talented animal for the McEvoy camp. He hasn’t raced since March 2019 when placing at the Valley in the St Albans behind Cheer Leader. Has had a long time off, been gelded and was down to resume a few weeks ago, but has been kept on ice and the recent trial win in SA was very sharp, so I’ll take a punt on him.
1 Magnajet (Bet Now: $8.50) is a Busuttin/Young trained four year old that returned in good order when leading throughout to win at Cranbourne under a lovely front running steer from apprentice Tayla Childs. Loses nothing, and probably gains by getting Lachie Neindorf to steer, should land near the front and prove hard to beat.
13 Prussian Dream (Bet Now: $26.00) has a good record on his home track and could add some value to multiples. Ran over 1200m here last time out where he got a bit further back than anticipated from the inside gate but worked home pretty well I thought. Like him back to 1000m and if they overdo it in front, he’ll be strong late.
Race 5. (15:45) TONY NOONAN SOCIAL SYND.-BM70 2000m
11 Carrie (Bet Now: $3.30) should love the rise to 2000m for the Danny O’Brien team. Caught the eye first up at Sandown behind Fudged before going to Geelong where she took an eternity to get into her work but surged hard late to get up and win. Like that Olly sticks and third up at 2000m, she is hard to beat.
6 Vegas Knight (Bet Now: $3.60) has these on toast re class and exposed form. The problem being he has only won the one race, but he’s nearing another win with the right placement and this does look potentially right placement. Ran over the mile at Sandown last time out and closed off strongly when second to Zero Doubt. Up to 2000m I like and is a key threat.
9 Ocean Miss (Bet Now: $6.00) is a grinding type that will put herself on speed and try hard. Was a month between runs when racing at this track/distance last time out, sitting near the speed and trying hard, but was clearly no match for the in form Melarita. Not sure she can beat this lot, but she will give herself every chance.
Race 6. (16:15) R.M. ANSETT CLASSIC 2415m
Going the way of 5 Naivasha (Bet Now: $7.00) for the O’Brien/Olly combo. I’d be willing to forget her run at the Valley last time out behind Creedence after bombing the start and that pretty much sealed her fate when down the track behind Creedence. On breeding, should eat up 2400m, has upside…gets another chance.
3 Naval Warfare (Bet Now: $15.00) has done a pretty good job in a couple of runs for the Freedman camp. Last run came in that Creedence race mentioned above where he did have specking at a price and was far from disgraced in defeat when fourth to Creedence. He’s going well and up to 2400m does look a big tick.
2 Harrison (Bet Now: $19.00) ran second in this race two years ago. How well is he going? Have to wait and see. But the resumption for the stable at Flemington over 1700m was more than a pass mark I thought behind The Chosen One. He’s on his home track and at his best, he has these on toast re class. Knockout chance at odds.
Race 7. (16:46) JACK DOW MEMORIAL (BM70) 1500m
I’ll take a punt on 16 Formentera (Bet Now: $3.00) for the WaterBott team. This three year old colt resumes at 1500m, so I dare they have eyes towards the Derby. He hasn’t raced since the Clarendon at Rosehill during the Autumn when off speed and finding the line strongly when second to Saffiano. Trials to get ready have been good and stable finds Williams to steer.
The best version of 2 Royal Order (Bet Now: $7.00) could easily see him win this and better races. Just has let punters down on a number of occasions when appearing on track to win one or two. Finds a really winnable race to resume in, stable finds Mark Zahra to steer and thought the recent jumpout was more than encouraging.
7 Toosbuy (Bet Now: $27.00) does like racing on his home track and he can improve on his recent form, which has been so so. Last run came two weeks ago at Cranbourne when off the speed and tried hard, but was just no match for them behind El Questro. Not sure I could back him to win, but is a must for multiples.
Race 8. (17:20) AMY & ASH YARGI RACING (BM78) 1200m
The one that is big odds here is 1 Kalashani Lad (Bet Now: $14.00). He is the one with class on his side and is hard fit. He ran at Cranbourne last time out and worked to the line pretty well late in the piece when close up behind another proven city performer, El Questro. Gets a lovely run from the gate, loves a wet track and back to 1200m is a big tick.
11 Shotmaker (Bet Now: $2.20) is a key threat. Price/Kent Jnr trained four year old that can be a bit hit and miss, but he has certainly got the engine under the hood. Thought there was plenty of merit in his win last Wednesday at Bendigo when wide no cover yet kept surging under riding and finished best in a driving go. Zahra jumps back on and is a leading chance.
2 Redefine (Bet Now: $31.00) is a quality animal for Rachael Frost that resumes. This gelding hasn’t raced since June 2019 at Sandown when down the track on a wet surface behind the best wet tracker in Australia, Jungle Edge. Has obviously had issues given he hasn’t raced for a long time, but he does have a touch of class when right.
