Night racing returns to Canterbury on Friday for an eight race card. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out three metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (18:15) Hyland Race Colours Mdn Plate 1550m
9 Moremi (Bet Now: $2.50) looks hard to beat for Richard Litt. Debuted over 1350m at Wyong when wide no cover for the trip and battled away really well when third to Mollycoddle. Draw looks much more kind this time around and the rise to 1550m should be ideal. On race day form, she’s the one to beat against these.
6 Segal (Bet Now: $7.00) looks suited up to 1550m for the Waller camp. Resumed over 1350m at Wyong and not sure much went his way in the straight. Not sure he would have won, but should have finished closer. Form out of that maiden has been ticked off, he gets extra ground, more upside than most and the depth isn’t strong.
7 So United (Bet Now: $5.50) looks the leader and we know that on speed/inside is the A1 spot at Canterbury, especially at these night meetings. Led and tired late when resuming at Kembla but gets a good set up here on paper with a lead there for the taking and Avdulla is riding in good form at the moment.
Race 2. (18:45) Schweppes Mdn Hcp 1100m
I’m with 10 Tight Ropes (Bet Now: $7.50). Chris Waller trained filly that resumes and I’m keen to see her on dry ground. Only time she has been on a firm surface was on debut when far from disgraced behind Rulership. Liked the way she went in a recent Rosehill trial and she either leads or box seats. Hard to beat.
6 La Foret (Bet Now: $2.50) is the pick of the raced brigade with the form around her. Resumes for the WaterBott camp after a two run prep to start her career in the Winter where she placed both times in strong races. Has trialled up well leading in and you’d think she will find the front and fence in run, so has to be respected.
7 Wild Wind (Bet Now: $5.00) is an interesting runner. Resumes and returns to racing as a gelding for Team Hawkes after a two run opening prep where he showed talent at times without winning. Just one soft 800m trial win to get ready for this, but does draw soft and there has been early interest for him at odds. Will be interesting to see if that will be sustained as post time approaches.
Race 3. (19:15) Tab Mdn Plate 1250m
Not sure Canterbury will suit him but I can’t ignore the first up run of 1 Jesse James (Bet Now: $3.60). It was one of the runs of the meeting, charging home from the back and producing some of the better late splits of the meeting. 1400m+ on a big track, he would be a good thing. Still think this set up is okay for him, especially with a gate to use.
7 Tycoonist (Bet Now: $4.80) is a Chris Waller trained galloper that resumed as a colt and now has been freshened up and returns as a gelding. Resumed on the Kenso track where the race shape was totally against him but was still sound in defeat behind Colonel. Gelded, nice tick over trial to get ready. Gate one and Nash steering, plenty to like.
12 Ruru (Bet Now: $20.00) is a filly that I doubt can win but for multiples, I’d be including her. Daughter of So You Think on debut for Chris Waller and the way she has trialled, she looks a staying So You Think. Pushed out to win a Warwick Farm trial but was strong to the line and through it. She will get back and run on, potentially sneaking a first four spot.
Race 4. (19:45) Anz Bloodstock News (bm72) 1900m
6 Kutayha (Bet Now: $2.50) on top for me. Chris Waller trained gelding that is two weeks between runs since racing at this track/distance when sitting back off a moderate tempo so he had to be very good to win from where he was and to his credit, he nearly got there. Just failed to pick up Gone Bye. Think that form reads well for this.
1 Bobby Dee (Bet Now: $5.50) is getting out in trip and I think can run an improved race at odds. Ran at Newcastle two weeks ago over 1850m when near the speed and fighting on gamely, but just didn’t have the speed in the legs to go with them behind Laure Me In. Should land near the front here and give a bold sight.
2 Time Raid (Bet Now: $8.50) is much better suited at this level. Jason Deamer trained gelding that ran at Newcastle on Hunter Day where he was near the speed throughout and in a slowly run race, he just didn’t have the speed in the legs to go with them when down the track behind Laure Me In. Think that form reads well for this.
Race 5. (20:15) Ranvet (bm72) 1250m
1 Let It Pour (Bet Now: $3.00) can bounce back here and think she’ll start favourite. Bjorn Baker trained mare that ran over 1200m at Newcastle a fortnight ago where she was on speed and kicking on strongly, but just felt the pinch late, finishing sixth to stablemate Bring The Ransom, but beaten under two lengths. Think that form reads well for a race like this.
8 Selburose (Bet Now: $2.10) is a nice filly and should prove hard to beat, but I’m amazed she is favourite and do feel that Let It Pour will start favourite. Selburose had the A1 run in transit last time out when winning her maiden here and was just able to wear down Supremo. Hard to beat…just way too short in early betting.
3 Leave Me Some (Bet Now: $11.00) is building a pretty good record for Grant Marshall and deserves a crack in town. This girl has won her past two, each coming over 1200m at Port Macquarie and each time she has been impressive. Good test here, but think she can run well, especially with claim for Louise Day. Knockout chance.
Race 6. (20:45) Bowermans Furniture (bm72) 1200m
I’m with 3 Super Contender (Bet Now: $1.90), resuming for Chris Waller. Created such a good impression in his opening prep, winning two and placing in a further two from four outings. The form around him just reads so well for Queensland racing, littered with subsequent winners, and has run time for the most part. Fascinating to see what the market does.
1 Lancaster Bomber (Bet Now: $7.00) is a very honest customer for Richard Litt who is never too far away from the action. Ran here two weeks ago under the lights and worked home strongly off a moderate gallop when third to impressive winner Najmah. Tricky draw, but good speed should ensure he gets his chance to finish over the top.
12 Newtown Is Coming (Bet Now: $17.00) is the one I can make a case for at a price. He finished behind Coolotta here a fortnight back where he was dragged back from the wide gate and never looked a winning threat, but the last 75m was encouraging. Can sit much closer in the run from the inside draw and can run a much improved race.
Race 7. (21:15) Kia Evening Star (bm78) 1250m
4 Zouologist (Bet Now: $3.80) is bursting to win a race and I think he gets a great chance here. Ran over the 1250m here two weeks ago when wide no cover on speed and despite that hard run, he kept finding and looked the winner, just failing to get there on the line when a close up second to Cuban Royale. Has gate one to use and with the claim, he’s hard to beat.
3 Charretera (Bet Now: $3.30) is a son of Epaulette for Team Snowden that resumes. This gelding doesn’t have the greatest of winning strike rates but his racing has mainly been at Saturday level and not at the midweeks. One soft trial to get ready, so market will be the guide as to whether or not he’s ready. Think he can run a positive race.
12 Liberty Sun (Bet Now: $8.00) is a handy animal who is a query at 1200m but gets the inside gate and claim to be effective here. Ran over 1100m at Randwick on Cup Day when just behind the speed and battled away well in defeat behind Never Talk. Think with the gate and claim for an in form Brock Ryan, he’s a leading contender.
Race 8. (21:45) Iron Jack (bm72) 1550m
11 Private Cheetah (Bet Now: $3.50) on top in the get out. Team Moore trains this three year old, who comes here having not raced since Cup Day at Randwick when on speed and trying hard, just failing to go on with it behind Regal Stage, who has won since. Leads these for fun and with Nash steering, he’s the one for me.
Does 2 Criminal Code (Bet Now: $3.80) want a rise in trip? Potentially, but he’s looking like he is heading in the right direction. Good here at this track/distance last time out when looming to win but was nabbed late by On The White Turf. Draws to get a lovely run just off the speed and will be strong late.
Not sure 5 Star Karen (Bet Now: $8.00) wins but could certainly include in wider exotics. Ran last Friday night at Canterbury where I thought Nash rode a perfect race on the mare and she was there to win, but couldn’t finish it off when fourth to On The White Turf. Think she’s going well though and a win wouldn’t totally shock.
