Group l racing continues at Doomben this Saturday where a high class field has been assembled for Doomben Cup Day. The weather is fine, the track is heavy (9) and the rail is out 2.5 metres for the entire circuit.
Race One (12:10) : LED Superscreens Handicap (Class 6) 1615m:
Back Me: 8 American Diva (Bet Now: $4.20) is a mare who is absolutely low flying at the moment for the John Smerdon. She was backed as if unbeatable when racing on Wagga Cup Day and aided by a brilliant ride by the Hippo, she dashed through nearer the inside and came right away. That was on a rock hard surface, and she is better with give in the ground. Clearly on top.
Big Danger: 7 Blackjack Bella (Bet Now: $2.60) is a mare bursting to win a race and she could pose a threat here. Ran over 1700m at Ipswich on April 26 where she sat off the speed and kept on nicely to run second. Was due to run last week but was scratched. Back to the mile looks ideal for this five year old.
Long Shot: 11 Honey Holt (Bet Now: $7.00) is the knockout chance here at odds. Ran over 1500m at Eagle Farm last time out at the midweeks where he got back in the run and couldn’t quite come on behind Order Again, who of course was outstanding in the Rough Habit. He is a swimmer and gets conditions to suit.
Race Two (12:46) : Queensland Electrical Oxlade Stakes 1200m:
Back Me: 9 Dream Kisses (Bet Now: $6.00) is a talented filly for the Steve O’Dea yard who did a pretty good job I thought when resuming at Eagle Farm where she got off the pace and tried hard but just couldn’t quite let down on the shifty track. Showed during the Summer that she is one of the better local youngsters going around, and 1200m at Doomben looks an ideal recipe.
Big Danger: 11 Cabin Fever (Bet Now: $4.60) resumed over 1050m here where she got a mile back in the run and savaged the line to get the win on the board. The raced in the Ken Russell where she again got back and again worked home with purpose behind Taking Aim. That looks really good form for this and the market hasn’t missed her.
Long Shot: 13 Pricing Power (Bet Now: $21.00) is still a maiden but she does deserve a win. Not sure if it will be here, but I think she can add some value into exotics. Ran in the Dalrello three weeks back at Eagle Farm and couldn’t let down on the shifty track behind Saint Patricks Day. The runs prior were strong, so include her in multiples.
Race Three (13:21) : IPG Connect Chief De Beers 1050m:
Back Me: Confident on 3 Hidden Pearl (Bet Now: $5.50) to bounce back into the winners list. Barry Lockwood trained mare that resumed in the Bat Out Of Hell at the Gold Coast and just copped too much pressure on speed when running second to Prompt Return. Not quite the greatest of records at Doomben but she is a two time second up winner.
Big Danger: 4 Prompt Return (Bet Now: $5.00) trialled up well on his home track at the Gold Coast prior to resuming in the Bat Out Of Hell where Jeff Lloyd gave him the perfect sit just off the speed and got the split at the right time to dash clear and win with a fair bit of ease. Loves Doomben and is near unbeatable when produced second up.
Long Shot: 5 Mr Manhattan (Bet Now: $6.50) is the big watch here. Resumes for Joe Pride and he is an absolute bomb when produced fresh, so I am guessing this has been a target race. Resumes off the back of some very sharp trial efforts, which have been run in fast time, so he does look wound up to my eye and the pace in front of him here will suit him perfectly.
Race Four (14:01) : Harding Steel Plate 1200m:
Back Me: Keen to see how/if 5 Secret Mo (Bet Now: $8.50) measures up. Talented three year old for the Lindsay Gough yard who resumed as an odds on pop at Eagle Farm and looked completely hopeless on the heavy track but still attacked the line to win, a sign of a very good horse. 1200m looks ideal and he does have quite an impressive record.
Big Danger: 16 All Over Bosanova (Bet Now: $4.40) drops a bit in depth after contesting the Gold Coast Guineas a fortnight back. Was hard in the market but unfortunately for her supporters, she was caught wide throughout and couldn’t come on. Jury is out on her, but on her best form, she is right up to these.
Long Shot: 2 Ringo’s A Rockstar (Bet Now: $9.50)comes through the Gold Coast Guineas two weeks ago. Got too far back from an okay draw and didn’t really come on but wasn’t beaten far by Savanna Amour. He showed in the Summer he is right up to this level and being third up, he should be close to peak fitness.
Race Five (14:41) : QA Hotel Bright Shadow 1200m:
Back Me: 5 Untamed Diamond (Bet Now: $3.20) looks a standout here and quite keen on her. She has been outstanding this time in for Richard Collett who is two for two this time in, the latest coming at Rosehill where she spanked them under Deanne Panya. Gets McEvoy on now, draws well, maps well and loves give in the track.
Big Danger: 7 Elegant Composure (Bet Now: $6.00) had really confident market support in the Silk Stocking when sitting outside the leader, and considering the horse inside her was $101, you’d think she would have gone past it…nah. The mare inside kicked and caused a massive boilover, but Elegant Composure should come on from that and rates highly.
Long Shot: 15 Not A Happy Camper (Bet Now: $26.00) is on the seven day turnaround after resuming last week at Ipswich where he did a bit of work on speed yet fought on strongly under Lloyd to get the win. Bred to swim and gets in okay after the scratchings barrier wise. Rises in grade but will be strong late.
Race Six (15:21) : The Magic Million Roses 2000m:
Back Me: 5 Oklahoma Girl (Bet Now: $7.00) is a threat, but she will be a massive threat if we happen to get a track with give in it. Put together two impressive wins before going to the 1800m at Rosehill where she got back and closed off okay but didn’t let down as expected behind stablemate Black On Gold. She is okay on firm ground, but lethal when she gets her toe in, which is what she gets here, so her chances are enhanced big time.
Big Danger: 2 Kenedna (Bet Now: $2.50) has been outstanding the past six months for Darren Weir. Has been in work during that time and has progressed from a provincial maiden to a Group l runner up, which was in the SA Oaks last start where she was nabbed on the peg by a star in Egg Tart. That looks the right form for this.
Long Shot: 13 Mia Rosa (Bet Now: $19.00) is the very interesting runner here. Daughter of Makfi for Mike Moroney that resumed on Anzac Day at Randwick over 1400m where she got back in the run but closed off strongly to get the win and beat So Splendid, who came out and won next start. Her form from the Spring reads very well and she’s in the right stable.
Race Seven (16:01) : Hardy Brothers Doomben Cup 2000m:
Back Me: 12 Articus (Bet Now: $4.60) for me here in a cracking edition of the Doomben Cup. Former German who bounce back to his brilliant best for Darren Weir last time out over 1800m at Flemington, showing an electric turn of foot when asked for the effort by Rawiller and he won with a fair bit of arrogance. Only better suited with the added fitness and up to 2000m…gee he looks hard to beat.
Big Danger: 1 It’s Somewhat (Bet Now: $4.00) was the surprise Doncaster winner who continued his picket fence form line this prep with a tough on speed win in the Hollindale. I think Tye Angland went too slow in front on the horse and almost got caught out, but he found plenty over the final 200m to comfortably hold his rivals. 2000m at WFA suits him perfectly and this is the race he has been set for all prep.
Long Shot: I’m not sure if anything from the Hollindale could turn the tables on 1 It’s Somewhat here, but if there was to be, I’d suggest it would be 9 Maurus (Bet Now: $10.00). He was only second up at the Gold Coast and did a mighty job in defeat given he had to make a run around 800m out and was wide but he did a mighty job. He has speed in his legs and is a clear knockout chance for mine.
Race Eight (16:36) : Taxibox BRC Sprint 1350m:
Back Me: Siding with 6 Federal (Bet Now: $8.00) in a very good race here. Still having nightmares after his run in the Prime Ministers Cup at the Gold Coast. He should have absolutely bolted in but just had no luck at all when getting clear, and when he eventually did, the race was over. Doyle takes over and his form since going back to Europe has been first class. He can return to Australia a winner.
Big Danger: 5 Ulmann (Bet Now: $3.80) had very confident market for Darren Weir when resuming in the Wangoom during the Warrnambool Carnival and aided by a peach of a steer by Ben Allen, the five year old dashed to the front and kicked away. Good second up record and last time he raced clockwise, he ran second to Winx.
Long Shot: 1 Jungle Edge (Bet Now: $7.00) is the big improver here. Forget his Wangoom effort where the blinkers came off and he just got back in a fast run race and couldn’t come on. I think he’ll bounce to the lead here, he’s a swimmer and back racing clockwise. If he does lead, he’ll take some beating.
