Racing returns to Eagle Farm this Saturday where it is Queensland Cup Day. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out six metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (11:43) Winning Edge Presentations Plate (Class 3) 1300m
9 Sienna Rose (Bet Now: $8.00) is a Steve O’Dea trained filly who trialled well enough prior to resuming over 1200m at Doomben where she got a fair way back in the run in a rail dominated race, but loved the way she attacked the line late to run third to stablemate Jami Lady. Extra 100m and a bigger track are two massive ticks for her and she’s a definite threat.
1 Sparky Lad (Bet Now: $3.00) is a Chris Waller trained gelding who was a real bludger when racing in Sydney. Sent to the Gold Coast stable, trialled well and resumed at Doomben two weeks ago where he was pretty good in defeat when second to New Horizons but I will say he had his chance. Up in trip on a bigger track on firmer footing looks a good set up…been a year since he has won though.
11 She’s Spicy (Bet Now: $3.10) is a daughter of Real Saga for the Matty Dunn stable that trialled well prior to resuming at Ipswich where she looked a little lost on the turns, losing momentum and that probably cost her the win when when second to Foxpack. Did win impressively second up last prep and I think the big key for her is getting onto a bigger track.
Race 2. (12:18) Functions @ Tatts Handicap 1500m
3 Knight Mariner (Bet Now: $3.50) on top. Tony Gollan trains this colt, who debuted over 1350m at Doomben two weeks ago where he looked a little bit lost when the sprint went on, but liked the way he found the line late nearer the inside when third to Kim Alicia. Think up to 1500m and the bigger track will really suit this bloke and does look to have enormous upside.
1 Star Of Michelin (Bet Now: $7.50) is very new and raw to the caper for Stuart Kendrick but looks talented. Debuted at Doomben and was okay in defeat behind Raging Pole, who has franked the form since. He then ran last time out at Eagle Farm where he tried everything to throw the race away, but found when asked and on the line was too good. Needs to improve his racing manners but looks to have a decent engine under the hood.
8 Gobsmacked (Bet Now: $11.00) is a Darryl Hansen trained filly who was a very sharp debut winner at Rockhampton, which is why I was keen on her two weeks ago at Doomben but I think they got the tactics wrong on her. Not sure leading is her go in life as she led, copped pressure and faded late behind Kim Alicia. On debut, she had cover and launched late. Those kind of tactics would be ideal here.
Race 3. (12:53) Des Lambart Memorial Handicap (75) 2200m
Looking at this race with Attorney out. 11 Pollinator (Bet Now: $18.00) is worth a look here for mine. This mare was a few weeks between runs when racing over 2200m at Doomben last Wednesday where she got a fair way back in the run but made up decent ground late to run fourth to Husson’s Pride, beaten a couple of lengths. Fitter and has upside, and she is a pure stayer, so in what could be a slog, I think she’s the way to go.
2 Our Mantra (Bet Now: $4.40) is going well for the Heathcoate/Anderson stable. He comes through the Illwendo race from two weeks back at Doomben and he tried hard but the leader/winner just had it too good in front and rightfully kicked on strongly to win impressively, but this horse didn’t stop chasing and was good in defeat. 2200m no issue, hard fit and in form.
8 Ocean Addict (Bet Now: $3.90) is an Ocean Park mare for Toby Edmonds who was quite good two back at Ipswich behind Poet’s Landing before racing over 1800m last time out at Eagle Farm when hard in the market and finding the line well in defeat behind Our Mantra. Racing as if the 2200m will suit and with upside, is one of the leading chances here IMO against this lot.
Race 4. (13:28) Stella Artois Handicap (70) 1000m
13 Stellar Power (Bet Now: $6.00) for me. Bryan Dais trains this gelding, who ran over the 1110km at Doomben two weeks ago where he had a really good run near the speed, a slow tempo set by the eventual winner Crafty Cop, and he kicked on well to run second. Like him back to 1000m on a firmer deck, he’s hard fit and has some decent form next to his name.
10 Soul Star (Bet Now: $3.90) has been pretty good in three runs back from a spell for the Maher/Eustace stable. Won well first up at Sandown before having little luck on the Kenso track before going to Sandown again when carrying the big weight and she was a bit bogged down on the surface when third. Gets really good weight relief with the claim for Jackson Murphy and looks a leading chance.
5 Argent D’Or (Bet Now: $6.50) is a son of Sebring for the Steve O’Dea stable that was formerly with Joe Pride. Had his first run for the new stable two weeks ago at Doomben where he sat off a very slow speed and had no chance but found the line well enough late behind Crafty Cop. Firmer track will really help his cause and his Sydney form is good enough to run well here.
Race 5. (14:07) GH Mumm Handicap 1000m
Fascinating runner is 4 Designer Maid (Bet Now: $2.80), a Kris Lees trained filly who is resuming. Short course filly who won both runs last prep, both over 900m at Newcastle and leading throughout each time. Loved the way she has trialled, twice, in readiness for her return to the races. If this was at Doomben, she’d be a good thing. Just the longer Eagle Farm straight is the only niggle I have.
Looks rather straight forward here including 1 Jami Lady (Bet Now: $3.30). Looked a moral over 1200m a Doomben a fortnight ago and that was the certainly the case, thanks to a positive steer from Ron Stewart, who took advantage of the gate to be in the box seat and from there, it was a painless watch if you were on. Back to 1000m is interesting, but she’s hard fit and has class on her side.
9 Cossie (Bet Now: $71.00) is a John Wallace trained filly who I think deserves a crack in town. Just found the wet track not to her liking two back at the Gold Coast before going Gatton and racing over 1100m where she was excellent in winning because she was on speed and there to be run down late, but she fought hard and was too good. Harder here, but I think she’s one to include in multiples.
Race 6. (14:47) Lazy Yak Handicap (Class 6) 1400m
Looks a really good race for the Tony Gollan trained 8 Tokoriki Lad (Bet Now: $3.80). Was quite keen on him at Doomben two weeks ago but he just looked a bit lost on the bog track, getting a mile out of his ground and forced wide on the turn. His finale was excellent, so 1400m at Eagle Farm on a firm deck, looks his race and IMO is one of the better bets on the card.
5 Looks Like Elvis (Bet Now: $4.20) is a Bryan Dais trained son of All American that was hard in the market when resuming at the Sunny Coast three weeks ago and he was there to win 300m out, but just ran out of condition late when third to Tisani Magic. Should take really good improvement from that and has a good second up record, so he’s very likeable here.
6 The Avenger (Bet Now: $6.00) is the interesting runner. Chris Waller trains this gelding, who hasn’t raced since May 25 when three lengths away from Cruze at this track/distance in a race where the form has been okay via Snitch. Recent Beaudesert trial was good and if he brought anything of his best from Sydney, he’d just about be beating these, so keen to see how he goes.
Race 7. (15:27) Queensland Cup 3200m
If this comes down to survival of the fittest, then 1 Yogi (Bet Now: $2.90) just wins. He’s got a bit of these in terms of class and 3200m will be right up his alley. As usual, he hit his usual flat spot in the Winter Cup at Rosehill last time and that probably cost him the win, surging late and just missing out on picking up Destiny’s Kiss. Tick over trial at Randwick was good and I think only bad luck beats him.
4 Saunter Boy (Bet Now: $7.50) is a Kris Lees trained import who looks to have been set for this. Was good two back behind Destiny’s Kiss before going to the Sunny Coast Cup where he just got too far back and I’m not sure he was 100% happy in the going behind Igraine. He’ll eat up the two miles based on his UK form, has upside and stable is absolutely flying at the moment.
7 Social Element (Bet Now: $16.00) will make sure this is a proper two mile contest. The WaterBott stable trains this stayer, who comes through the Stayers Cup from three weeks ago at Rosehill where I thought Tim Clark rode the perfect race on him from the front and he tried hard but couldn’t quite finish it off when fourth to Azuro. Looks to lead again and will give them something to chase.
Race 8. (16:07) Tatts Mile 1600m
5 Silvera (Bet Now: $2.50) is going super for Tony Gollan. Just missed out on the win two back at Ipswich before going to the Rockhampton Cup where he was given a sweet steer by Brad Stewart and lapped up the conditions best to claim the Country Cup. Has run well at Stakes level before when with Tony McEvoy so the class rise is fine and is one of the hardest to beat.
2 Torgersen (Bet Now: $16.00) looks a potential knockout chance here for Chris Waller. Last time he produced a string of good runs was when he was racing in Queensland and he returns here. Put a line through his last run at Caulfield behind Masculino given the tempo was a crawl, the track was shifty and he was just no hope. Does no work from the draw, like him back to the mile…a win wouldn’t shock at all.
A firmer surface will help 6 Fit For Purpose (Bet Now: $16.00), who was okay in the Glasshouse before backing up a week later in the Rockhampton Cup where he struggled to pick his feet up on a very shifty track behind Silvera. 1600m on a dry track looks idea for this galloper and his overall form doesn’t read too bad so an improved showing certainly wouldn’t surprise.
Race 9. (16:43) Triple M's Greg Martin Handicap 1600m
I think with the better form, I’ll just lean the way of 6 Enterprise Louise (Bet Now: $6.50) in a competitive race. Michael Lakey trains this filly, who was good two back here behind Vega One before stepping back to 1350m last Wednesday at Doomben and liked the way she finished her race off behind Churning. Racing as if the mile will suit and is one of a few ways you could go here.
7 Trevelyan (Bet Now: $4.50) has been crying out for more ground on a big track and he gets that set up here. Last couple have come at Doomben and I’ve really liked his efforts, the latest in the Churning race from last Wednesday mentioned above when doing work in the run, wide no cover, and sticking on well to run third. If that run hasn’t busted him, he’s a serious winning chance.
5 Shijin (Bet Now: $12.00) is a Scott Morrisey trained filly who was solid in defeat last time out in the Sunny Coast Guineas. Outclassed and well held but far from disgraced after sitting near the speed throughout and fighting on bravely to run fourth to the Group l performed Baccarat Baby. She’ll welcome the drop in grade/depth and will appreciate getting back on top of the ground.
