Ipswich will play host to their biggest race day on Saturday where it is Ipswich Cup Day. The weather is fine, the track is soft (5) and the rail is out half a metre for the entire circuit.

Race 1. (11:38) Sirromet Bundamba Plate Hcp 1350m
2 Derani (Bet Now: $5.00 TOP ODDS) on top but not really a race I want to get involved in. Kacy Fogden trained gelding that led and tired late on debut at the Gold Coast. Found firmer footing at Doomben, was ridden with a sit and the end result was a dominant win. That was 1200m, so the 1350m here should be no issue.
3 Minto’s Paradise (Bet Now: $7.50 TOP ODDS) should be suited back to this level. Thrown in the deep end in The Phoenix last time out and was outclassed, as well as probably not handling Eagle Farm when down the track behind Volcanic Rock. Better suited here and can bounce back.
4 Balmaurice (Bet Now: $7.50 TOP ODDS) has the engine under the hood to give this a shake. He was heavily backed when racing at this track/distance last time out. Just didn’t handle the tight turns but balanced up and was good late. He’ll be better for the experience at the track and gets Winkers on to sharpen him up.
Race 2. (12:13) Carlton Mid Ipswich Mile-bm80 1666m
10 Prospectus (Bet Now: $2.70 TOP ODDS) gets Craig Williams aboard and that’s enough for me. Racing really well without winning is this guy but a significant jockey upgrade and drawn inside, he does look hard to beat. Just depends if Williams can hold a forward spot but the jock has ridden six winners from his last 11 rides so he knows what he is doing, especially this time of year.
6 Getyourgreyon (Bet Now: $3.90 TOP ODDS) has returned in super order for Michael Costa and is hard to beat here. 2/2 this time in, resuming with a fast finishing win over 1400m at the Sunny Coast. Then raced on his home track at the Gold Coast where he led throughout and was dominant. Confident he can measure up here despite the 1666m being a query.
Fitter and up in trip I do like for 9 Great Powers (Bet Now: $19.00 TOP ODDS). Mark Currie trained mare that has had a few runs for the stable now after formerly being with Les Ross. Far from disgraced i thought in the QTIS Gold Jewel behind Tumbler Ridge in what I think will be a good form race. Up in trip and back in depth, she appeals.
Race 3. (12:48) Channel Seven Stayers (bm78) 2500m
2 Incentivise… (Bet Now: $1.24 TOP ODDS) how good is he? There are some saying he should be a $15 chance for the Caulfield Cup, which is one of the more outrageous statements/opinions I’ve heard in some time. That’s not saying he is not a nice horse because he very much is. He spanked them at Eagle Farm two weeks ago and his late splits from the front were some of the best of the meeting. I think he wins this…but cool the Caulfield Cup chat.
5 Isabella’s Spring (Bet Now: $10.00 TOP ODDS) is a mare that is racing honestly at the moment for Barry Lockwood and can fill a minor spot. Tough win near the speed last time out over 2400m at the Sunshine Coast, which is a suitable grounding compared to an 1800m sit/sprint the fav won. If my arm was twisted to have a bet in this race, it would be this girl to place.
9 Brocson (Bet Now: $41.00 TOP ODDS) is proven at the track and can sneak a first four spot. Ran over 2200m at the Sunny Coast last time out and battled on pretty well in defeat after sitting near the speed when third to Wile Sheila. I highly doubt he can win this, but I would include in wider multiples.
Race 4. (13:23) Ray White Ipswich (rs0mw) 1350m
8 Luna Mia (Bet Now: $3.90 TOP ODDS) looks one of the better bets on the card. Paul Messara trained mare that was thrown in the deep end fresh in the Helen Coughlan and I didn’t think she disgraced herself at all behind Exhilarates and wasn’t too bad late in the piece. Fitter, up in trip, massively down in grade/depth…keen.
5 Westlink (Bet Now: $9.50 TOP ODDS) is bursting to win a race in town and I think he gets another great chance. Three weeks between runs since racing over 1200m at Eagle Farm where he got a fair way back in the run and worked home strongly when a close up fourth to Genzai The Wolf. That form has been well and truly franked via Superium last Saturday so it reads well for this. Hard to beat back up to 1350m.
10 Wowsers (Bet Now: $10.00 TOP ODDS) lacks the class of some of these but one thing he does have going for him is that he is a track specialist, winning two of three, with a minor placing as well from three starts here. Latest run came over the mile at Doomben when just off the speed and fought on well when fourth to Aiolos. Hard fit, racing well and is a knockout chance.
Race 5. (13:58) Schweppes Tl Cooney 1350m
I am looking at this race with Amish Boy out. He’s a beauty 2 Tumbler Ridge (Bet Now: $4.80) and I think he can win again. Met with some support when racing in the QTIS Gold Jewel two weeks ago at Eagle Farm and the bets were landed. Got into a lovely spot off the speed before McEvoy eased wider, let him down and he was too good. That was his first run in a month so you’d like to think there is room for improvement.
8 Palladas (Bet Now: $2.60) is three weeks between runs for Tony Gollan since racing in the Fred Best at Eagle Farm where he was far from disgraced in defeat I thought in what was a hot race won by Apache Chase. Ayrton ticked the form off last Saturday and this does look a very winnable race.
4 Safework (Bet Now: $13.00) looks cherry ripe for this. He’s fourth up from a break and should just about be at peak fitness. Latest run came two weeks back in the QTIS Gold Jewel when a closing third to impressive winner Tumbler Ridge. Got more upside than most and has strong form.
Race 6. (14:37) River 949fm Plate (c6) 1200m
The class of 3 Desert Lord (Bet Now: $2.10) gets him home I think. Talented animal for David Vandyke that resumes, having not raced since January 23 at Doomben where he looked home when the button was pushed but was nabbed on the peg by Roman Aureus. Looked great in a recent Sunny Coast trial and the stable is an absolute bomb when produced fresh.
5 Dr Why Not (Bet Now: $8.50) is a beauty. Puts himself near the speed, tries hard and is just so honest. That was evident three weeks ago at Eagle Farm and he looked the winner, but was pipped near the peg by Genzai The Wolf. Superium came out of that to win last Saturday, so the form has been ticked off.
9 Phantom Falcon (Bet Now: $4.00) is a Kacy Fogden trained gelding that had one soft trial leading into his return at the Gold Coast where the market knew something because he was best backed and the market got it right. He led throughout and bolted in. Harder here, but he’s got the right racing pattern for this track.
Race 7. (15:17) Ipswich Cup 2150m
It’s a head scratcher working out the prep of 6 Flash Aah (Bet Now: 9.50) but one thing I do know is that he is racing super. Ran in the Spear Chief two weeks ago where he was near a pretty solid speed and fought on well when fourth to Charleise. Should do no work from the inside gate and is bred to eat up the trip.
2 So You Win (Bet Now: $3.90) is on the seven day back up for Chris Waller. He raced last Saturday in the Wayne Wilson in what was pretty much an embarrassing race shape with a lack of tempo. Clearly didn’t suit this horse, but he was a definite pass mark. He’ll love the rise in trip and a soft run lead up is a good platform.
1 Inverloch (Bet Now: $15.00) will put himself on speed and give his all. That was the case when he won the Wagga Cup two back. Then went to the Winter Cup at Rosehill and just found the 2400m a bridge too far. Better suited here and we know on speed/rail isn’t a bad spot at Ipswich.
Race 8. (15:53) Eye Liner Stks 1350m
2 Amish Boy (Bet Now: $3.50) is flying for the Maher/Eustace camp. His late splits were enormous in the Fred Best, producing the best Last 600/400/200 of the meeting when a narrow third to Apache Chase. He’s only won the one race but is much better than that record suggests, so keen on him here.
4 Boomsara (Bet Now: $11.00) looks back on track. Thought he wasn’t too bad in the Goldmarket behind Baller before going to the QTIS Gold Jewel where he was on speed and fought on strongly when a close up third to Tumbler Ridge. He’s got good upside to come and should just about be at peak fitness.
7 Stampe (Bet Now: $9.00) should be suited back up to 1350m. Far from disgraced at the trip behind Emerald Kingdom in the BRC Sprint. He then came back to 1200m in the Moreton Cup and battled on pretty well in defeat behind Baller. 1300/1400 is his sweet spot so he gets his chance in a winnable Eye Liner.
Race 9. (16:36) Gai Waterhouse Classic 1200m
This looks a lovely race for 2 Boomtown Lass (Bet Now: $4.00). Resumed two weeks ago in the Lightning at Eagle Farm. Paraded like she would be better for the run and Chris Anderson pre race suggested as much. She ran like it too. Loomed to beat Usmanov but fitness just gave way. Great record at the trip and is just a genuine racehorse.
5 Kylease (Bet Now: $15.00) deserves blacktype success and I think she gets a golden chance here. Led for 1100 of the 1110m two weeks ago in the Chief De Beers but was nabbed near the peg by Varda, who swooped from the back and was outstanding. Out of trouble on speed, she’ll give a mighty sight.
8 Socialising (Bet Now: $23.00) can easily bounce back here. Thought she was good fresh at Doomben in the Bright Shadow behind Outback Barbie. Then went to the Helen Coughlan and she didn’t let down at all on the Eagle Farm. She’s better than that so giving her another look.
