A very strong nine race card has been assembled for Doomben this Saturday with good depth right across the board, especially in the three year old races. The weather is showers, the track is heavy (10) and the rail is out three metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (12:52) Evian Handicap (90) 2200m
3 My Giuliano (Bet Now: $5.00) landed some good bets with a strong win over 2000m here two weeks ago. He appreciated sitting back via a cold ride and sitting off a fast speed. Once Fradd wound him up and got him to the outside, he was always going to be the strongest at the end and that is how it panned out. Just has to tick the 2200m box.
5 Monteux (Bet Now: $5.00) is a quality galloper who stuck on well in a similar class race last time out. Should sit on speed and with the heavy rain should be suited by the on speed conditions which should favour at Doomben today. Query over the track conditions but if he handles it he looks hard to beat.
2 Outraged (Bet Now: $13.00) is one horse who will love the 2200m here. He found the 2040m a bit sharp for mine last time out in the race won by My Giuliano. His effort was sound, but he just didn’t have the speed in his legs to go with them. That’s why I think 2200m will suit and he’s a knockout chance.
Race 2. (13:27) Watpac Handicap 1050m
5 Singular Sensation (Bet Now: $3.10) looks an above average filly for the O’Dea camp who could well develop into a Magic Millions contender with a win here. Could not have been more impressive on debut at the Sunny Coast, spanking them by over four lengths, led all the way, did everything right and ran brilliant time. She’ll measure up here for sure.
1 Only Wanna Sing (Bet Now: $3.50) looks the key threat. Rob Heathcoate trained gelding who debuted at this track/distance a fortnight back and closed off really well late in the piece despite being long odds when a narrow second to the heavily backed Ef Troop. Should only improve off that outings and rates highly.
6 Animal Spirits (Bet Now: $7.00) is a Spirit Of Boom filly on debut for the Guy camp. Liked the way this filly moved in a recent trial on her home track at the Gold Coast. Nothing flash time wise, or margin, but she looked to move quite nicely and did everything right to the eye. Just has to overcome the triicky draw.
Race 3. (14:02) Pullman Brisbane Airport Plate (Class 3) 1050m
5 Capital Connection (Bet Now: $4.40) is a boom horse resuming for Tony Gollan. He created quite the impression after winning on debut here by a space before a couple of placings and then spanking them at Ipswich. Has trialled brilliantly in readiness for his return to the races and he has really good form at this track.
14 Winter Bride (Bet Now: $4.20) is a Segenhoe mare for Toby Edmonds who bolted up fresh at the Gold Coast before a couple of placings over 1200m at Ipswich where she has run well but the six furlongs probably saw her limit, so back to the 1050m here with Lloyd on, just has to overcome the sticky gate to be a threat.
Back to 1050m will sit 9 Real Cute (Bet Now: $13.00). She just got too far back the other day over 900m at the Gold Coast but I liked the way she closed off her race late in the piece behind Upstart. Then up to 1100m on Melbourne Cup Day and that was not her go. Back to 1050m looks ideal and if they do go hard in front, as expected, look out for this mare to launch at them late.
Race 4. (14:37) Accorhotels Handicap 1050m
1 Dream Kisses (Bet Now: $8.00) is a smart filly for the O’Dea stable that is resuming here. This girl hasn’t raced since the Townsville Carnival where she contested a $100,000 race and ran a gutsy second to star North Queenslander and proven city performer Paradis Imperial. Been tuned up with two trials and she has class on her side.
4 Amelia Jane (Bet Now: $3.30) has fitness on her side, and is in a real purple patch. She has bolted up in both runs back from a break, spanking them first up at Toowoomba before going to Gatton where she was just as impressive in winning by over four lengths. Hardest test to date, but as I said, fitness and form carries her a long way.
5 Cooroi Chase (Bet Now: $21.00) is on the quick back up for the Hulbert team after racing over the 1200m here last Saturday where she didn’t really get involved in the contest from where she was back in the field behind Dazzling Red. Run prior on the bog was a beauty and while I think she is better with give in the ground, she does have good form next to her name.
Race 5. (15:17) Catalina Sounds Handicap 1050m
Best race on the program for mine. Siding with 3 Whypeeo (Bet Now: $1.50). Very good three year old for Toby Edmonds that resumes here. Had a really good prep to kick off his career in the Winter/Spring, ending it with a space job over the 1110m here. No trials, but has residual fitness, has speed and maps super. Keen.
1 Bring It Home Pop (Bet Now: $4.50) is probably the best horse in the race but first up at the 1050m is the negative. His prep ended in style during the Winter with a couple of outstanding wins at the Sunny Coast. He’s going to come right into his own later in the prep, but he has class, the form on the board and he will be strong late.
2 Saint Patricks Day (Bet Now: $18.00) has the recent run under the belt but I have no idea what to make of said recent run. It was awful behind Adoradancer. Got back, was wide and really just couldn’t get involved. He is much better than that and the market did say he’d flop there ($7.50-$14). Very good horse when right, so give him another look.
Race 6. (15:52) Novotel Brisbane Airport Handicap (70) 1615m
7 Aqua Vite (Bet Now: $3.10) was heavily backed when racing at this track/distance a fortnight back but he just didn’t seem to let down like normal on the firm ground and had to settle for third to stablemate Snapper. Should be a bit more give in the track this time, which will help big time, and I can’t ignore the support he had.
1 Mercurian (Bet Now: $5.50) could be the sneaky improver here at odds. This bloke comes through the Snapper race at this track/distance a fortnight back where he got off the pace in the run and worked home with purpose late to run fourth. been a while since he has won, but he draws a sweet gate and gets Lloyd steering.
9 Hotel Coste (Bet Now: $7.50) could be a potential improver here up to the mile. He is three weeks between runs for the Bruce Hill team since racing over the 1350m here where he got off the pace and worked home well late behind a very good horse in Freddie Fox Trot. The mile should suit, he has upside and will be strong late.
Race 7. (16:32) IBIS Brisbane Airport Plate (Class 6) 1350m
4 Bourbon Road (Bet Now: $16.00) is racing so well at the moment yet continues to go around at decent odds. Lot to like about his effort here a fortnight back on the firm surface when working to the line with purpose from the back to run second to Spring Tycoon. Form around him does read well, he’s hard fit and in form.
9 Desert General (Bet Now: $10.00) is a Liam Birchley trained gelding who looks hard to beat here after resuming over the 1200m here three weeks back where he sat off the pace and worked home strongly late to run second to the heavily backed Fiery Heights. Second up at 1350m looks ideal and he can run well after a fresh effort.
11 First Crush (Bet Now: $51.00) is an interesting one here. Stayer resuming for the Chris Munce team but this horse can pull out a decent run fresh. Hasn’t raced since the Grafton Cup when finishing down the track behind Supply And Demand. Has run in two fast trials to prepare for his return and he has placed two from four first up.
Race 8. (17:12) Keith Noud Handicap 1200m
8 Hi I’m Back (Bet Now: $4.20) rises sharply in grade here, but he’s the hard fit/in form horse. He could not have been more impressive at this track/distance three weeks when spanking a quality field by three lengths and was powerful to the line and through it. He generally does perform better early on in a prep, but how can you ignore last start.
7 Bidii Babe (Bet Now: $9.00) looks massive overs in this race. She has a very good second up record and handles the wet conditions which she will get on Saturday. She goes up in class but she gets in very well with the weights and they should be coming wide by this time of the day which will suit. big watch
11 In His Stride (Bet Now: $18.00) is a talented galloper for the Rex Lipp team. He resumed over this track/distance three weeks back and while he never really looked a winning chance, I thought he closed off quite well late behind Fiery Heights, who did run poorly last week to put a question mark on the form, but this horse is too talented to ignore.
Race 9. (17:48) Redy2go Handicap (85) 1615m
3 Zahspeed (Bet Now: $2.20) has been pretty good in three runs for the Edmonds camp. He landed some big bets when winning at this track/distance two weeks back, leading all the way to win under Jeff Lloyd and was dominant in winning. Creeping up in the weights, but maps well again, hard fit, in form…rates highly.
1 Urban Night (Bet Now: $10.00) looks a very good each way bet in the last on the card. He handles the heavy conditions having won a good quality race on the rain affected ground in May. He may need some luck from the barrier by the end of the day but should be included at the price.
7 Lord Coconuts (Bet Now: $19.00) comes through the Zahspeed race here two weeks ago and his effort from the back against the bias was excellent. Closed off with real purpose and despite never being a winning threat, he was a real eye catcher to run fourth. Very well in the weights despite dropping in grade and has to go close on what he has done in recent times.
