Sandown Lakeside will play host to an eight race card on Monday. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out four metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (12:50) Ive Print Hcp 1300m
1 Miss Dunsford (Bet Now: $2.70) gets the nod in the opener. Daughter of Dissident that debuted over 1200m at Pakenham where she was specked at odds but was trucking in the run. Just a matter of getting clear air and once she got it, she exploded and surged hard late to win. Off that, she’ll eat up 1300m and be strong late.
2 Born Hustler (Bet Now: $5.00) is an interesting runner. With the colours and name, you’d assume she’s related to Brooklyn Hustle and that she is, being a half sister. Jumpouts have been pretty good. Debuting at 1300m I find interesting but being out of Tarzino, it’s understandable. Market will be the guide.
5 Merchelle (Bet Now: $5.00) returns to Victoria for Team Kav after debuting on the Parks track at Morphettville when wide with cover and worked to the line okay but was no match for a sharp filly in Aitch Two Oh. Fitter and up to 1300m, I think she’s in the ball game for sure.
Race 2. (13:25) Tile Importer Mdn Plate 1200m
12 Shohei (Bet Now: $1.90) on top but even money is too short. Well bred filly that debuted at Newcastle and tried hard from near the speed but had to settle for a game second to Sabino, with a gap to third. Has been accepted a few times in NSW but has been scratched in waiting for a dry deck and she gets it here.
2 Fuller (Bet Now: $3.70) is a son of Pierro for Chris Waller that resumes. Hasn’t raced since his debut at Yarra Valley back in December when on speed and tried hard but no match late for the finale of Ain’tsheserious. Form out of the maiden has been strong, liked a recent jumpout and maps super on speed.
3 Galaxy Ruler (Bet Now: $13.00) is one for wider multiples. Resumed at Geelong when off the pace and was there to threaten. He did make ground but was never a threat when fifth to Hongbao. Fitter and up to 1200m are two big ticks, plus the stable is in form. Including in exotics.
Race 3. (14:00) Thoroughbred Club (bm70) 1400m
6 Lady Court (Bet Now: $3.40) looks ready to rock and roll first up for Peter Moody. Had a two run Spring prep, debuting with an impressive on speed win at Pakenham before being smashed in betting at The Valley and for mine, she just didn’t handle the tight track. Two jumpouts to get ready and fresh at 1400m tells me she’s ready to go, potentially with an eye towards Brisbane.
4 Versilia (Bet Now: $2.60) is the hard fit/in form horse but I am surprised she is favourite. Last two starts/wins have come over 1400m at Pakenham. Visually, they have been impressive wins, but she has been blessed each time with perfect rides/runs. But, at least she took advantage, maps well again and stable is flying.
5 Succeed Indeed (Bet Now: $15.00) is the one at odds I could speck. Ran over this track/distance last time out when dragged back from a wide gate and was never a threat, but liked the way she finished off. If the inside gate is used to advantage, I think she could be dangerous at a price.
Race 4. (14:40) Behind The Barriers 14/5-bm64 1300m
5 Lafargue (Bet Now: $4.20) on top but not really a race I want to get involved in. Danny O’Brien trained three year old that spanked them in a maiden two back at Echuca before going to Sandown when back off the speed and chased strongly when a close up third to Black Bolt. Should get into a sweet spot from the gate and he has the hard fitness.
Market will be fascinating with 1 Arran Bay (Bet Now: $4.40), who resumes for Phillip Stokes. This guy has been kept on ice since the Spring/Summer, where he won a couple of races on the bounce before ending the prep with a third at Flemington. Two jumpouts and a trial suggest he’s ready to go here, but market will be the guide.
7 Defrosted (Bet Now: $16.00) has done little wrong this time in for Grahame Begg and commands respect in a race like this. She ran over 1400m last time out at Sandown and tried hard from on speed but was clearly no match for Rebel’s Choice. She’ll put herself near the front and give her all.
Race 5. (15:20) Ladbroke It (bm70) 1200m
9 D’jumbuck (Bet Now: $4.40) on top. Brian McGrath trained gelding that attempted to lead throughout over this track/distance last start and got control, trucked and gave a strong kick, but couldn’t quite hold out a handy one, Rockribbed. Should lead these for fun and I think on speed will be the spot for this meeting.
8 No Quarantine (Bet Now: $3.40) had been knocking on the door to win a race this prep and it finally came last time out at Pakenham, leading throughout in a Class 1 and giving nothing else a look in, winning quite impressively. Tricky draw to overcome, but has found form and gets J Kah.
3 He’s Xceptional (Bet Now: $11.00) comes here with fresh legs, having not raced since William Reid Night at The Valley where the race shape wasn’t to his liking and he couldn’t get involved when down the track behind Ice Pick Nick. Overall form reads very well for this and gets in nicely after the claim.
Race 6. (16:00) Ladbrokes Mega Multi (bm78) 2100m
17 Detonator Jack (Bet Now: $2.50) is heading towards a Derby path you would assume with a win here and this should be winning. He’s a very progressive animal for the Maher/Eustace camp, winning 2/2. Bolted up over the mile last time out where he got completely lost when hitting the front and really, the margin flattered his rivals. With a bunny to chase, he’ll be far more effective.
13 Austrata (Bet Now: $3.90) has found winning form for Chris Waller. Can he hold it? Peach from J Kah saw this well bred galloper win over 1800m at Sandown last start. He was there to be beaten but had the ideal sit and was strong to the line. Like him up to 2100m and is the only threat.
12 Lunatic Fringe (Bet Now: $8.50) might want one more but the stable is going well and her return was quite encouraging, which came over the mile at Sandown when a solid fourth to a pretty classy filly I feel in My Whisper. I think that form is good enough to measure up here. Just whether she wants one more, not sure.
Race 7. (16:40) Ladbrokes Live Betting (bm70) 1400m
16 Oriental Legend (Bet Now: $4.20) for me. John Sadler trained three year old that comes back to 1400m after racing over 1800m last time out when on speed and tried hard, but just wanted to lay in under pressure and tired late when fourth to Deepstrike. Back to 1400m I like and Zahra is a strong left handed whip rider so the laying in should be negated.
15 Princess Rhaenys (Bet Now: $5.50) is a quality mare for Peter Moody that makes her long awaited return to racing. She did a good job when last in work, which was around this time last year. Had the two runs, winning fresh before a fourth to Hungry Heart in the Vinery Stud at Rosehill. Market will tell you if she’s ready to go.
12 Zerelle (Bet Now: $9.00) is a Busuttin/Young trained three year old that was outclassed in the Australian Guineas. He then went to the Mornington Guineas when ridden positively and tired late behind Jungle Magnate. Better suited at this level and his best is clearly good enough.
Race 8. (17:15) Ladbrokes Same Race Multi-bm78 1600m
I’ll take a chance with 1 Hosier (Bet Now: $3.20), who resumes for Team Williams. Created such a good impression during the Winter/Spring before a howler on Stakes Day at Flemington, but was found to be sore behind, so he had excuses. If he’s right to go, he’s better than these. Market will be key.
9 Saint Of Katowice (Bet Now: $3.00) has found winning form…can he hold it? Ran over 1500m on the Hillside track here last time out when leading throughout under J Kah and he drew right away late, suggesting an extra 100m here should be no issue and on speed is no disadvantage for this track.
2 Trosettee (Bet Now: $8.00) looks set up for a Warrnambool assault big time I feel, potentially the Cup. Australian debut came over the mile at Mornington where he was given the suck run out the back and worked to the line strongly when fourth to It’s Tornado Storm. Staying at the mile tells me this is a prep run for the Bool but he has plenty of ability.
