16/2/2024 Horse Racing Tips and Best Bets – Canterbury

11 Hell Of A Fox (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is the each way play for me in the opener. John Thompson trained filly that debuted over 1100m here two weeks ago where she had a suck run on the fence and was building into the race nicely but late, she got held up and went to the line under a hold when third to Mellifluent. Better for the run, up in trip and with clear air earlier, she can finish over the top.

1 Excelindeed (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is a handy colt for GaiBott that appeals. He ran second in the Mellifluent race mentioned above. He attempted to lead throughout and looked all over a winner when kicking clear but was run down late. 1200m is a query but with front end control, he’ll take running down.

10 Cinsault (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is a well bred filly that is one of the key chances. She debuted on the Kenso where she had a suck run on the fence and had her chance but was solid to the line late in the piece when third to Getafix. Has the inside gate to do no work in the run and if the breaks go her way, she can threaten.

4 Invader Zim (Bet Now:  $SP.00) looks a really good prospect for Chris Waller and I think he can resume with a win. He debuted at Gosford in October where he was a real eye catcher in defeat from off the speed when a closing fifth to Yankee One. Given a good break and his trial work to get ready has been very encouraging. Keen on his prospects in a very winnable maiden.

3 Gaylord (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is a key threat. Team Snowden gelding that debuted over 1100m here two weeks ago where he got into a decent spot just off the speed and kept finding the line but was clearly no match for Amoreux. Like him up in trip and with good upside to come, rates highly.

6 Life Coach (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is a coming maiden winner. Whether it comes here, not sure, but he is racing well and should be around the mark, which was the case two weeks back here when on speed and fought on gamely but was no match late for Seton Hall. Maps to get an ideal run in transit and third up from a spell, he should be hard fit.

6 Zarrose (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is the best on the card. Team Snowden trained filly that has been strong in two runs this time in, letting down with real purpose to win fresh at Kembla before going to Warwick Farm where she wasn’t suited by the race shape but I really liked the way she found the line late in the piece. Hard fit, has a gate to settle closer and gets a jockey upgrade with Tommy back on.

3 Dulcet (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is a son of Eminent that resumes for Chris Waller. This guy is first up, having not raced since Oct 25 when midfield in the Geelong Classic and was spelled. He has eyes on longer races but 1550m fresh tells me there is some level of intent and with two trials under the belt, he’s ready to go.

9 Little Baia (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is on the seven day back up after racing over 1250m here last Saturday…well, I say ran, but it was pretty much a barrier trial. She didn’t get clear air at any stage, so forget she went around. Like her up in trip and with clear air throughout, I think she’s going well enough to take this out.

7 Field Wiri (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is a model of consistency for Team Freedman and is one of the leading chances in an open race. This mare got a fair way out of her ground at Newcastle last time but she got clear air late and charged to the line, just missing out on the win when a narrow second to Bindi’s Choice. Blinkers on, fast run 1100m, she’ll sit off the good speed and finish off strong.

2 Elegant Empress (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is a very interesting runner. Formerly with Annabel Neasham, she now finds herself with Jarrod Austin off the back of two wins, bolting up at Goulburn last time which followed a narrow but strong win at Muswellbrook. Good racing style, gets Nash, genuine…she’s likeable.

8 Angel Fund (Bet Now:  $SP.00) comes here with fresh legs for David Pfieffer, having not raced since her resumption on Australia Day at Warwick Farm where she got back in the run and failed to make up any ground behind Shezanalister, who won last Saturday at Randwick, so the form reads super and her best is good enough to be dangerous here.

11 Hanau (Bet Now:  $SP.00) for me. James Cummings trained three year old that gets Blinkers for the first time after racing on the Kenso last time where he got a dream run in transit and looked all over a winner but couldn’t finish the job when a narrow second to Desiah. He gets Blinkers on to sharpen him up and I do think he finds a winnable race here.

2 Gallant Star (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is the best horse in the race, by some distance. Just a matter of how much intent there will be given there is a Country Championships Qualifier around the corner. His last run was Jan 13 at Rosehill when placing over 1300m in a solid benchmark race won by High Blue Sea. Maps perfect, he’s very genuine…just watch the market.

1 Ebony King (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is capable with his best. Grahame Begg trained gelding that was luckless at Sandown last time. He had a suck run behind the speed but when it came to getting clear, it didn’t eventuate, so forgive and forget. He is a capable horse, he’ll press forward, gets Nash…definite winning chance.

5 Cosmic Lad (Bet Now:  $SP.00) looks to have a bit on these. Ed Cummings has another nice prospect on his hands I feel. He was a real eye catcher here on debut before going to Newcastle where he stepped up to 1500m and gave them an absolute spanking in a very sharp display. The rise to 1900m I find interesting but he’s bred to eat it up and has more upside/progression than most.

9 Parabellum (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is racing like she will appreciate a rise to 1900m. Ciaron Maher trained mare that has been solid in two runs back from a spell, winning fresh at Newcastle before going to the Gosford mile where she got back off the speed and kept finding the line in a solid effort behind Apollo Mission. Hard fit and up to 1900m, she is in here as a threat.

10 Wecansay Dun (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is the knockout hope. John O’Shea trained mare that resumed over the Gosford mile where she gave them a start and a beating, launching late from the back for a big win. Maps to do no work in the run, she’ll eat up 1900m and has good upside. Dangerous for sure.

6 Ita (Bet Now:  $SP.00) seems a big price here I feel. Bjorn Baker trained mare that ran just under two weeks ago at Rosehill when near the speed throughout and tried her guts out but just lacked the quality to go with them late behind stablemate Estadio Mestalla. She has a good record at Canterbury, she maps to do no work in the run and be dangerous at the end. I think she’s a great bet at odds.

10 Arale (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is a ripping mare for Ben Smith that has to be respected. Tough on speed win at this track/distance last time, just getting the bob in a driving go, albeit she was suited by the race shape where those on speed dominated. Harder here but hard to knock the way she’s racing.

2 Special Envoy (Bet Now:  $SP.00) hasn’t really set the world on fire since arriving in Australia but he finds a winnable race. His last run came at Rosehill on Jan 20 when attempting to lead throughout and was found wanting late in the piece when down the track behind Buillt. Tick over trial was good, he’ll land on speed and give cheek.

6 Border Control (Bet Now:  $SP.00) will do me in the get out. Adam Duggan trains this son of Brazen Beau, who ran at Warwick Farm on Jan 10 when just off the speed and while he had his chance, he was far from disgraced in defeat behind Mr Kennedy. Fresh legs I find interesting and Blinkers first time, kind map, he’s likeable.

7 Mr Kennedy (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is an improver for Richard Litt. Be forgiving of the last start effort given he was wide no cover throughout and just felt the pinch late. Gets a more economical run this time around and gets Blinkers on again. He can run an improved race and take this out.

2 Liberty Sun (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is a short course specialist so he’s suited at 1100m here I feel. Greg McFarlane trained veteran that was plain in two runs at Saturday metro level to start the prep before going to Canterbury where he ran an improved race but still was a bit on the plain side. Against this lot, he is one of the leading contenders.

BEST BET: Race Three Number 6 Zarrose

NEXT BEST: Race Six Number 5 Cosmic Lad

LONG SHOT: Race Seven Number 6 Ita
