The Grafton Cup Carnival continues in Wednesday where it is Ramornie Handicap Day. The weather is fine, the track is soft (7) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
Ramornie Handicap 🏆: View the Field and Odds for the Ramornie Handicap
Race 1. (12:29) Pay Rise For The Pub.Sector-C6 2200m
5 Our Candidate (Bet Now: $1.50) looks to pick himself. Not sure he has many winning days left, but this does look a race he should win. He stuck on really well in a slog at Rosehill last time when third to Yggdrasil after making a midrace move. I think as he gets older, he is better on firmer footing, and he’ll get that here.
4 Olympic Class (Bet Now: $3.70) tried to force his way into the Grafton Cup via the Prelud and for the most part, he looked the winner, but he had no answers late for Bold Contender, who is the most improved horse in this part of the world. Looks a race in one but outside Our Candidate, he’s clearly the best of the rest.
8 El Lago (Bet Now: $5.50) is a distant third pick for mine. Was just a win over 2000m at Moruya last time but what it did tell me is that he will stay all day so 2200m here should be fine for him. Class factor is a concern, but he’s hard fit, in form, and should be on speed, so he commands some level of respect.
Race 2. (13:04) Grafton Taxis - 6642 362 Mdn 1000m
12 Wakatipu (Bet Now: $2.30) gets the nod in this Country Maiden. Cav trains and he gets J Collett to steer, a combo that rarely misfires. This filly debuted at Tamworth back in February when a close up third and was found to have bled. Given a good break, trialled well at Muswellbrook, gets a soft trip from the gate and finds a thin race.
8 Moskeeta (Bet Now: $5.00) looks a horse with talent. Just staying at 1000m is the knock. Both runs have come over the trip at Coffs Harbour where each time she has got back in the run and found the line strongly. If they overdo it in front, look for her to be strong at the end.
14 Rossy’s Typa Girl (Bet Now: $26.00) is one I can entertain for wider multiples. 2YO against the older horses is always a good recipe and I thought she was okay on debut over 900m at Newcastle when run off her legs but was good late. If the inside gate is used to advantage, she could be dangerous at a price.
Race 3. (13:39) Grafton Gas & Plumbing Hcp-C2 1100m
The gate is awful for 7 Zaru (Bet Now: $21.00) but have to speck each way because if he’s ready to go, he’s just about better than these. Formerly with Matty Robinson, he now finds himself with Joseph Burges and go back through his form last prep. He ran third in a Country Championship Qualifier, run prior he was 1.8L off a Stakes class horse in Flying Crazy…if he’s ready, and gets a drag into the race, he can easily finish over the top.
3 Oakfield Duke (Bet Now: $2.90) is a promising horse for Kristen Buchanan. He was given a peach by Bullock to bolt up at Muswellbrook last start, with his change up speed when let down there to see, and his late splits were strong. With luck from the gate, he’s hard to beat.
10 Our Fox (Bet Now: $26.00) can be an improver at odds. He resumed on a very testing track at Moruya and he was off the bit on the turn. Entitled to spit the dummy out but he stayed on and was sound in defeat. Back on firmer footing and fitter, I am expecting improvement from this gelding.
Race 4. (14:14) Black Type Feeds Hcp (C2) 1100m
If 2 Le Melody (Bet Now: $1.25) can stretch her brilliance to 1100m, good luck beating her. Promising filly for Cody Morgan that is 2/2 to start her career, both wins coming over 1000m on her home track at Tamworth. Needs to produce it on the road but all signs say she goes very good.
3 Licciardi (Bet Now: $10.00) is a very interesting runner. Formerly with Team Corstens, she now finds herself with Cav and has gate one. Her form reads solid enough for a Class 2 and looked to move well in a recent Muswellbrook trial. The negative is that she is bumping into a smart one but gets the ideal map.
11 My Girona (Bet Now: $26.00) will appreciate a fast run 1100m. Neil Osborne trained mare that ran over 1250m at Taree last time out where she got held up for a few strides and should have finished closer, but overall, she had her chance. Fast run 1100m, I can see her sitting back and being strong late.
Race 5. (14:49) Winning Edge Presentations-C2 1600m
2 Contreras (Bet Now: $4.20) is heading in the right direction. He is looking to make it three wins on the bounce, his latest win being a spank job win over 1800m at the Sunny Coast. Back to the mile I find interesting, but he is a horse in form and should be strong at the end.
8 Oakfield Warpaint (Bet Now: $4.80) gets an ideal map and can bounce back. He bolted up two back at Coonamble prior to going to Gunnedah where they rode him a bit warm and he was weak late. From the gate, he should get a lovely run in transit and can bounce back for sure.
14 Salty Rain (Bet Now: $10.00) hasn’t been too bad in two runs back from a spell. Good from off the speed fresh at Taree before going to Port Macquariie where he got a mile out of his ground but loved the way he finished his race off behind Exolay, a handy horse, so the form looks solid enough and the rise to 1600m is a tick.
Race 6. (15:24) Grafton Guineas 1600m
6 Aramis (Bet Now: $4.80) looks a promising three year old for Mark Newnham. He comes into this off the back of a spank job win at Gosford where he didn’t take on much but made a mess of them, winning by a space and clearly clocked the best late splits of the meeting. He’ll slide forward and take beating.
Hard to knock the way 9 Bootscooter (Bet Now: $5.50) is going this time in. Tough win from the filly at Randwick a few weeks ago, coming from off the speed and 150m out she looked like she would spank them but she just got there. If the 1600m is okay, she’ll be around the mark once again.
18 Evocator (Bet Now: $12.00) commands respect at odds for Jenny Graham. Progressive three year old that has been racing in this part of the world and has caught the eye pretty much each time he has stepped out, the latest a closing second over 1500m at Port Macquarie. If he can settle closer in the run, he’ll be dangerous.
Race 7. (15:59) Ramornie Handicap 1200m
1 Gem Song (Bet Now: $9.00) has class and it will carry him a long way. He tried to force his way into the Stradbroke via the BRC Sprint but couldn’t quite get there, far from disgraced in defeat behind Soxagon. Tick over trial was a good piece of work and he is quite a good horse on the fresh side.
3 Desert Lord (Bet Now: $6.00) should be primed for this assignment. He ran several weeks ago in the Eye Liner and worked home very well from the back when second to dominant all the way winner Holyfield, who was given a peach in front and gave nothing else a look in. Bigger track helps his cause, a fast run 1200m…can see him finishing over the top.
4 Hard Empire (Bet Now: $9.00) looks ready to rock and roll for Team Edmonds. This rising nine year old seems to have a healthy zest for racing still despite getting on in years. He hasn’t raced since the Sunshine Coast Cup in January when down the track behind Scallopini. Great fresh record and his trials leading in have been sharp.
Race 8. (16:34) Crown Hotel Motel (Bm58) 1400m
2 Think High (Bet Now: $12.00) looks the one to beat in a two horse race IMO. Matty Dunn trains and he comes here third up with a rise in trip. Both runs this time in have come over 1200m, the latest run seeing him beat one home at Newcastle, but he didn’t have much luck in the straight. Hopefully gets a firmer deck and I do think up to 1400m is a big tick.
9 Rupertson (Bet Now: $4.00) is bursting to win a race for Bjorn Baker. Son of Winning Rupert that has only won the one race, but he does have talent. Last couple of runs have come at Scone where he has done work on speed and fought hard to place. If the 1400m is okay, he’s hard to beat.
7 Viking Power (Bet Now: $8.50) is a very interesting runner for Paul Murray. He’s on the back up from Sunday here where he was a well tried favourite but was very plain when asked for an effort in the straight behind Moyassar. I will say the track has been fence in run/on speed so far this Carnival and with Blinkers first time, I am expecting improvement.
