Night racing returns to Canterbury this Friday. Weather is fine, track is soft (5) and the rail is out two metres for the entire circuit.

Race 1. (18:00) Chandon Mdn Hcp 1550m
8 Saytara (Bet Now: $SP.00) for me in the opener. GaiBott trained filly that attempted to lead throughout over 1400m at Warwick Farm last start and gave a strong kick from the front but just felt the pinch late in the piece. Think she will get front end control and takes running down.
3 Defendant (Bet Now: $SP.00) is knocking on the door. He ran two weeks ago at this track/distance when off speed and kept chasing in the straight but found one better in So Rebellious. Hard fit, J Mac aboard, ideal map, he rates highly.
5 Willie Or Wong (Bet Now: $SP.00) He comes back to 1550m after racing over the mile at Kembla last start when just off speed and tried hard but couldn’t quite see it through when fourth. Tick over trial was good, he’ll do no work from the gate and be effective at the end.
Race 2. (18:30) Asahi Super Dry (Bm64) 1250m
3 Maybe Moet (Bet Now: $SP.00)…I am stunned she opened around $4. I can mark her odds on. She was the run of the night when resuming at this track/distance two weeks ago, with the track pattern beating her when a fast finishing second to Monte Kate. Better for the run and with natural upside, I think it is a case of good luck beating her.
7 Manaajem (Bet Now: $SP.00) is a Tassort mare that resumes for Peter Snowden. She had a two run Winter prep and didn’t fire a shot each time she stepped out. Given a really good break and has looked to trial well for the return. I’d watch betting.
6 Lady Yarrow (Bet Now: $SP.00) is a very genuine mare for Theresa Bateup. Dominant win over 1200m at the Sapphire Coast last start, leading throughout and she gave nothing else a look in to win well. Good racing style, she’ll give cheek.
Race 3. (19:00) Yarraman Park (Bm64) 1250m
Looks a lovely race for 4 Caesar (Bet Now: $SP.00). Peter Snowden trained gelding that returns to racing after the ultimate operation. He has showed good promise in the three start career and after a decent break, gelded, his trial work has ben very strong, with the grounding well and truly there to win first up.
2 Bryant (Bet Now: $SP.00) steps up to 1250m after a first up win over 1100m at Warwick Farm, giving them a start and a beating in an impressive performance, knuckling down late. Fitter and up to 1250m, he’s one of the leading contenders.
1 Reflect (Bet Now: $SP.00) is a Joe Pride trained filly that resumes. She did some nice things when last in work, winning the maiden at Kembla before a solid enough effort in the Flight Stakes. She will likely spot them a start but be strong late, so watch betting.
Race 4. (19:30) Toyota Forklifts (Bm78) 1900m
2 Captain Fenkel (Bet Now: $SP.00) each way for me. He ran over this track/distance three weeks ago, attempting to lead throughout and he gave a decent sight from the front but just couldn’t quite see it through when third to Allegro Miss. Front end control, in well after the claim, he’ll take running down at odds.
6 Suit Of Armour (Bet Now: $SP.00) should appreciate a rise to 1900m after resuming over 1550m here a fortnight back. He got a fair way out of his ground and while he was never threatening, he kept chasing and was pretty good late behind Ivan’s Hero. Better set up here, good upside, he’s in the mix.
7 Mirra Impact (Bet Now: $SP.00) steps up to 1900m after a solid effort over 1800m on the Kenso when off speed and was a bit one paced when asked for the effort but kept chasing and was far from disgraced in defeat. Tricky draw, but with luck, he’s dangerous.
Race 5. (20:00) Petaluma (Bm72) 1100m
2 Shaggy (Bet Now: $SP.00) will jump on the bunny and take running down, as seen two weeks ago at this track/distance. He attempted to lead throughout and gave a strong kick from the front but was nabbed late. He’ll find the top and if the track is playing up/in, he takes running down.
12 Strada Varenna… (Bet Now: $SP.00) it’s nearly D Day for her I think. This time last year, she was being touted as a Golden Slipper contender, but she hasn’t gone on with it since at all. That said, she was good in defeat at Rosehill behind Eagle Express and back to 1100m, this level, J Mac, it’s kitchen sink time.
14 Bengal (Bet Now: $SP.00) ran fifth to Kingdom Undersiege a few weeks back in the Highway at Randwick. He got near the speed, doing work, and tried hard, but just couldn’t quite see it through. His best is clearly good enough so don’t dismiss.
Race 6. (20:30) Schweppes (Bm72) 1550m
4 Oakfield Mamselle (Bet Now: $SP.00) has returned really well for Kris Lees and confident she can measure up against these. Loved the way she let down and sustained the run to get the job done at Newcastle last time, lifting late when required under Bullock to score. Hard to knock the way she has returned.
3 Pillow Fight (Bet Now: $SP.00) is a few weeks between runs since racing over 1400m at Randwick where she attempted to lead throughout and tried hard but had no answers late for Cinsault. 1550m is the slight query but she gets front end control and the form does read well.
11 Shanoni (Bet Now: $SP.00) steps up to 1550m after racing over 1400m at Warwick Farm last time. She got dragged back to find cover and was never really a factor. Think with a more positive ride, she can run a much improved race.
Race 7. (21:00) Kia Evening Star (Bm78) 1250m
10 Starboard (Bet Now: $SP.00) should prove hard to beat for Team Freedman. He ran over this trip at Newcastle last start when off speed and worked home quite well late in the piece when third to impressive winner Monte Veebee. Hard fit, maps to settle more handy and be effective late.
7 Ringarosa (Bet Now: $SP.00) doesn’t have the best of racing patterns but she is flying I feel. Ran a fortnight back at this track/distance when off speed and kept chasing with purpose in a pretty good effort in defeat behind Monte Kate. She’ll get back but launch late.
3 Silentstar (Bet Now: $SP.00) was a total forgive from the Class 6 on Magic Millions Day. He got off speed and was never really a factor when down the track behind Hawker Hall. Back to this level, he’s a big improver at odds.
Race 8. (21:30) The Agency Real Estate (Bm64) 1550m
Can’t find her in any markets yet, but I reckon 10 Soverato (Bet Now: $SP.00) could be the Oaks filly for Chris Waller. Better suited over further I reckon but 1550m signals clear intent and have loved the way she has trialled in readiness for the return. Great each way gamble.
4 Sister Daae (Bet Now: $SP.00) steps up to 1550m after racing over 1400m at Randwick last start. She got into a decent spot off speed and tried hard but in a race dominated on speed, she was never really a factor. Much better suited here, she can bounce back.
9 Throttle Response (Bet Now: $SP.00) comes back to 1550m after racing over the mile at Newcastle behind Oakfield Mamselle. He got too far back off speed and was good late without threatening. Small field helps his cause…he’s a knockout hope.
