A bumper eleven race program has been set down for the Gold Coast on Saturday for Magic Millions Day. Weather is fine, track is soft (5) and the rail is out two metres from the 900m-400m; True for the remainder.

Race 1. (12:20) Magic Millions Country Cup 1200m
15 Party Spirit (Bet Now: $4.80) is absolutely flying for Rob Heathcoate and commands respect. 3/3 this prep, the latest win coming at Warwick where she got a dream sit behind the speed before angling clear and finishing best for a narrow but impressive win. Good test here against some likely types but hard to knock a mare racing as well as she is.
11 Brocky (Bet Now: $7.50) is a son of Stratum for Liam Birchley that resumes. He is first up, having not raced since October 21 at Eagle Farm when near the speed throughout and battled away really well in defeat behind the then in form Sha Of Gomer. He is a horse who can sprint well on the fresh side and this stable has a great record on this raceday, so watch the market.
9 Velvet Haze (Bet Now: $9.00) has a tricky draw to overcome but she is racing really well at the moment for Kris Lees and commands respect. She has won her past two, those wins coming in November, with the latest being at Coffs Harbour on Nov 30. Tick over trial was sharp and with luck from the gate, I think she’ll be around the mark.
Race 2. (12:55) Magic Millions The Debut 2Yo Fillies 1000m
2 Champagne River (Bet Now: $12.00) looks a good each way gamble for mine. David Vandyke trains and she won a two horse trial at the Gold Coast. Overall time, as expected, was nothing flash, but she did dash home nicely and had something in reserve. She’ll be strong at the end of 1000m and maps ideally. Happy to be with her each way.
9 Too Darn Lizzie (Bet Now: $1.85) is the short priced favourite and understandably so really given her trial win at Warwick Farm where she led all the way, spanked them, and ran time. Stable is flying with their juveniles, she seemingly looks like she has a good racing style and will look the winner for a long way. Just the last 100m may be her test.
3 Divine Di (Bet Now: $51.00) is a Divine Prophet filly for Jay Bellamy. She ran second to Champagne River in the trial mentioned above. She was asked for an effort and was comfortably held but perhaps she wasn’t suited by the shape of the trial where they walked and only dashed the last 400m or so. Perhaps with a more genuine tempo here, she’ll be better off.
Race 3. (13:30) Magic Millions The Debut 2Yo C&G 1000m
10 The Hamo (Bet Now: $4.80) seems the most obvious for Team Hulbert. This gelding trialled at Doomben a few weeks ago where he led throughout and what I liked is that when he was pushed out, there was a response and he won well in good time. Should find the front comfortably here and on a track that looks like it could be leader friendly, he’ll be hard to get past.
2 Barracuda (Bet Now: $3.20) is a GaiBott son of Trapeze Artist that is on debut. He trialled at Rosehill a couple of weeks back where he was near the speed throughout and he kept on in a pretty good effort behind Wyong Magic Millions winner Highness, so that form reads well for this and the stable is absolutely flying with their juveniles.
6 Indecisive (Bet Now: $9.50) is a son of Brazen Beau for John Thompson. He’s had two trials to get ready, winning a trial at Kembla in good style before going to Rosehill where he was well held but didn’t move too bad in defeat when fourth. He maps to get a suck run in transit and if they overdo it on speed, he’s dangerous at odds.
Race 4. (14:05) Magic Millions Open 1300m
9 Boom Torque (Bet Now: $7.50) is an each way speck for mine. Matty Dunn trained gelding that resumed two weeks ago at Doomben where he lumped 62.5kg and he should have bolted in. He just had no luck at all and it ended up being a horrendous watch when third to Inasec. He is eligible for much easier but he gets massive weight relief, he likes firm, he’ll be strong late…I think he’s worth a throw at the stumps at the odds.
1 Rothfire (Bet Now: $3.60) is the class of the field, by a mile, and that will carry him a long way towards victory. He was outstanding when winning the King Of The Mountain at Toowoomba, sitting on speed throughout and credit to him, he was there to be beaten, but he found and his class came to the fore to win. The end of 1300m is a query, but class carries him a long, long way.
8 Better Get Set (Bet Now: $26.00) is dangerous with her best. O’Dea/Hoysted mare that ran two weeks back in the Nudgee where she got back off the speed and made up minor headway without threatening behind Lady Laguna. Maps to do no work, better suited on firmer footing and I think is drawn the right part of the track.
Race 5. (14:40) Magic Millions Subzero 2200m
There was this theory once upon a time that 2 Warning (Bet Now: $13.00) was a swimmer but I reckon as he is getting older, he is a dry tracker. He was excellent on a dry deck first up at Flemington before racing at Randwick in the Summer Cup where he found wet ground and was never a factor, albeit he was just under two months between runs. Better set up for him here, hopefully this track can dry out, upside…I think he’s worth a gamble.
3 Zennzella (Bet Now: $4.80) is a quality mare for Maher/Eustace on the up that should appreciate a rise in trip. She won the Lord Stakes at Caulfield on Boxing Day where she looked a good thing in transit and under Jamie Kah, class got her home in a nice display. The rise in distance is ideal, she has more upside than most and is in the right camp.
6 So United (Bet Now: $5.50) will jump on the bunny and prove hard to get past. That’s how he won three weeks back at Randwick, sitting on speed before taking the front and hr was there to be beaten but he found under pressure and was strong to the line in winning. Has won up to 2140m and placed at 2400m so 2200m here will be no issue, good racing style…hard to get past.
Race 6. (15:15) Magic Millions The Syndicate 1100m
3 Contemptuous (Bet Now: $46.00) was poor in this race last year but I reckon he is bang on to run well here first up. He hasn’t raced since August 26 at Doomben when near the speed throughout and seemingly had his chance but was close up in defeat behind Spaceboy. He trialled behind Golden Boom and for mine, he went much better so IMO, he’s the value and the each way bet.
5 Derry Grove (Bet Now: $7.50) is a talented animal for Matty Dunn that resumes. This guy is first up, having not raced since The Kosciuszko where he got too far back in an on speed dominated affair and was never a winning factor, finishing down the track behind Front Page. Loved the way he trucked in a recent trial win at Murwillumbah and he has lethal change up speed when cuddled.
10 Reliable Ruby (Bet Now: $41.00) is eligible for easier but she has good change up speed and is flying for Chris Munce. She ran over 1000m at the Sunny Coast on Boxing Day where she gave them a start and beating, sitting back and launching over the top for a dynamic win. Harder here, clearly, but she is a very genuine mare that can launch at them late.
Race 7. (15:50) Magic Millions Snippets 1200m
I reckon the value lies with 1 Baller (Bet Now: $11.00) for Tony Gollan. I reckon he’s back after being in the wilderness. He resumed in the George Moore where the market said he had three legs but he was one of the runs in defeat behind Zoustyle in what was an on speed dominated race. Tick over trial at Deagon was great, he’ll love a good speed, firm deck…think he only runs well.
3 King Of Sparta (Bet Now: $1.55) won this race last year and he looks to be humming towards it again. He hasn’t raced since The Hunter at Newcastle when back and closing off strongly against the race shape when second to all the way winner Coal Crusher. Tick over trial was a nice piece of work, he’ll get back, he loves a dry track…clearly hard to beat.
8 Hard To Say (Bet Now: $14.00) is a son of Exceed And Excel that resumes for Jason Deamer and is dangerous. He is first up, having not raced since Big Dance Day at Randwick when a strong winner of the Choisir. Looked electric in a trial win on Friday and he is a proven performer in Queensland. Hard assignment first up but he looks a likely type.
Race 8. (16:35) Magic Millions 2Yo Classic 1200m
I think the favourite is a bet at $2.50+, and of course I speak of 1 Storm Boy (Bet Now: $2.50). He has been electric in two starts/wins and there I just can’t see anything beating him, especially the way he arrogantly put them away to win with such ease last time out at Eagle Farm. I think all things equal, Storm Boy is a good thing and happy to take $2.50+.
4 Highness (Bet Now: $4.50) is the Wyong Magic Millions winner and has to be given some level of respect. Was he lucky to win? Given the work Spywire did and subsequently pulled up lame, you can argue he was lucky, but he still had to take advantage of the situation and that he did. Tick over trial was strong and both stable/rider love these big 2YO races.
11 Erno’s Cube (Bet Now: $11.00) is a knockout hope. There was a lot of quality about his win over 900m at Newcastle on Hunter Day in the Max Lees before going to Randwick where he was there for a trial it seemed like, getting back and making up good ground behind Straight Charge. Up to 1200m, good speed, he’ll be strong late.
Race 9. (17:20) Magic Millions 3Yo Guineas 1400m
15 Trifling (Bet Now: $18.00) won’t be a query at 1400m given she won over the mile last time in the City To Surf, beating a very much in form Weigall Tiger. Home track advantage, and she maps to do work from the gate. She has versatility re racing pattern as well, so for mine, she’s an easy each way speck in an open race.
10 Sydney Bowler… (Bet Now: $SP.00) beware the unbeaten horse. 3/3 to start his career for John O’Shea and each time, he has been quite dynamic and impressive. The win two weeks ago at Randwick was dominant, sitting on speed before being clicked up and he drew clear late to win and win well. 1400m should be no issue and rates as one of the leading contenders.
7 Weigall Tiger (Bet Now: $17.00) has been up a little while but is holding his form superbly and has a good racing style. He ran in the City To Surf where he was near the speed throughout and was there to win but just didn’t have the finale of the eventual winner Trifling. I think he’ll press forward and with that 1600m run under the belt, he should be strong at the end of 1400m.
Race 10. (17:55) Magic Millions Cup 1400m
10 Battleton (Bet Now: $26.00) is on the seven day back up for Bjorn Baker after racing last Saturday at Randwick over 1400m where he got back in a very fast run race and spotted them too much head start but I really liked the way he found the line late in the piece when third to Excelladus. On the back up, I think, will be fine, and he should be strong at the end.
2 Far Too Easy (Bet Now: $5.00) has to be rated as one of the leading contenders. He has run well on this day previously and looks cherry ripe for this off the back of a dominant win four weeks ago in the Lough Neagh, lapping up the 1400m at Eagle Farm to win by a space. Didn’t beat a great deal but he ticked the 1400m box and he has a fab record at the Gold Coast.
9 King Of Hastings (Bet Now: $19.00) is one I can entertain for wider multiples. He ran on New Years Day at Canterbury in the Canterbury Classic and while he was never a threat, I didn’t mind the way he finished his race off in defeat behind Insurrection, running 1.2L third. He’s a talented horse in his own right…good enough to win this? I am saying no, but a must for exotics.
Race 11. (18:30) Magic Millions Fillies & Mares 1300m
13 Junqueira (Bet Now: $3.70) was a sharp winner last Saturday and I see no reason why she can’t measure up. That win on the weekend came in a Class 4 but the arrogance of the win was something else and she won with plenty in hand. Maps to get a perfect run in transit and if the track isn’t too crap come race eleven, she’s the gamble for me in the race.
1 Royal Merchant (Bet Now: $5.50) is a slight query at 1300m IMO but she is the class of the field and class will carry her a long way. She won the Wyong 3&4YO Magic Millions where she was backed as if she was Winx but she won as if she was a provincial horse, so that is my doubt with her, but she was several weeks between runs and had Blinkers first time so with improvement to come, she has to be respected.
4 Extremist (Bet Now: $11.00) will land near the front and give a sight. She was on speed throughout two weeks back in the Nudgee and she gave a strong kick but couldn’t quite finish it off but that said, she was far from disgraced in defeat when fourth to Lady Laguna. The end of 1300m is the query but she’ll give a great sight.
