Nine races will be run and won at Doomben this Saturday. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out six metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (11:32) Help Enterprises Handicap 2040m
I think 2 Anton En Avant (Bet Now: $9.00) can be the each way play here. He comes through the race won by Mr Epic here a fortnight back and I thought his effort was quite good. Got back in a race dominated by those near the pace and though he never really looked likely, he was making ground. He has the upside and I think he can turn the tables.
I think it was more so the ride from McGillvray that got 1 Mr Epic (Bet Now: $2.15) home in that race mentioned above. He whizzed around them midrace to get up near the lead and that was the winning move because this horse doesn’t really have a turn of foot, but he will keep on. Expect him to be in a similar spot and fighting.
5 Viva Espana (Bet Now: $31.00) is on the quick back up after racing here last Saturday in what looked a pretty solid staying contest and she was far from disgraced I thought behind Devil Hawk. She has run well on the seven day back up before, and overall, this isn’t a strong race. Knockout hope.
Race 2. (12:07) Elite Portables Plate (Class 3) 2040m
3 Bronzegate (Bet Now: $7.50) is in ripping form at the moment after racing on his home track at the Sunny Coast a couple of Sundays back where he was crunched in betting to start deep in the end and despite a few hairy moments, he eventually got the bob in to win. He is the up and comer/fresh blood here and this is a thin race.
10 Pinolino (Bet Now: $3.70) is a consistent mare for the Liam Birchley yard who has had a couple of runs over the mile here recently, winning two back before racing here two weeks ago and running a game second to Ingeegoodbe. Looking for more ground, she gets it here, hard fit and in form.
1 Binary (Bet Now: $9.50) is racing very well at the moment for the Kelly Schweida camp at the moment. Problem is he doesn’t win. Looked the winner last Wednesday over 1800m at the Gold Coast but couldn’t quite get past Thermal Unit, who did have a 4kg weight swing. Hard to trust, but he is racing well and is a must for exotics.
Race 3. (12:42) Caltex Bellbowrie Handicap (70) 1050m
3 Navua Mist (Bet Now: $7.00) is a nippy mare for the Kris Lees who has been working on her craft at the NSW country tracks and has done a really good job for stable and connections, doing her thing on speed, showing great early toe and then fighting hard at the business end. Harder here, but she deserves a crack.
2 Madame Lily (Bet Now: $8.50) is a former Team Snowden mare that makes her Queensland debut for the Matty Dunn yard. She was going okay for the Snowdens in NSW but just couldn’t quite measure up in town. Sent to Dunn and she looked very good to my eye in a recent Ballina trial. Keen to see what the market does.
11 Bonsho (Bet Now: $4.60) is the map horse here. She hasn’t raced since July 22 where she raced over this track/distance and weakened late behind Khalama. Should get the lovely sit off Jest Excel here and have last say, especially with the claim for McGillvray. Can definitely see her winning this.
Race 4. (13:17) Chris Munce Racing Handicap (90) 1050m
5 Hanwritten (Bet Now: $2.35) is a sparingly raced seven year old that resumes for the Matty Dunn. This bloke has only had 11 career outings but has shown above average ability during that time, more than holding his own in Sydney. Given a nice quiet trial last Monday at the Gold Coast but he doesn’t appear to need much work to fire.
1 Stella Ombra (Bet Now: $3.80) is a tough, tough campaigner for Kelly Schweida who should take some beating here. Won here last Saturday when toughing it out strongly near the speed and fending off the well performed Tumbler. Should get every chance from the rails draw with the claim.
The blinkers first time well and truly backfired with 7 Tailevent (Bet Now: $9.50) last time out at Randwick. He fired up big time on speed, running fast sectionals in front and rightfully faded late behind Kings Of Leon. With better racing manners, and cover, he can bounce back hard in a winnable race.
Race 5. (13:52) Mcintyre Centre Riding For Disabled Handicap (75) 1640m
11 Meet And Greet (Bet Now: $4.60) gets the nod for me. He was backed as if unbeatable when racing at this track/distance a fortnight back and aided by a gun ride from Brad Stewart, he peeled off their backs at the right time and eventually wore them down for the win. Looks to have upside also, so I’ll stick with him.
10 Kubis (Bet Now: $4.80) did a very good job in defeat at this track/distance two weeks ago. Did some work to get up near the speed before taking the lead and fighting hard but couldn’t hold out Meet And Greet, who had the softer run in transit. With a more economical run here, he can go one better.
17 Rogali (Bet Now: $27.00) is on the seven day back up here after racing last Saturday at the track/distance and really, if you backed him, just forget it. Sorry I brought it up. He went around as if it was a barrier trial, so he really hasn’t had the hard run to query the back up. Right in this for sure IMHO.
Race 6. (14:27) Pillow Talk Plate (Class 6) 1350m
12 Oink (Bet Now: $2.00) is a talented four year old for Kelly Schweida who looks the clear horse to beat here. Ran over 1200m here a fortnight back where he got slightly held up behind runners before eventually getting clear but he was never going to get past impressive winner Prioritise. Strikes a thin race here and should be hard fit, ready to go.
9 Cornrow (Bet Now: $6.00) got a much needed confidence boosting win three weeks ago here. Market support said he’d run very well and aided by a peach from Stewart, the Team Hulbert trained galloper sprinted away when clear of a pocket. Now he has a win on the board, he can go right on with it.
7 Bells Of War (Bet Now: $26.00) looks ready to win to my eye. Smart mare on her day who bounced back to really good form here a fortnight back. Got back and wide for the trip but still kept coming and really attacked the line to just miss out on picking up Jadedfox in a thrilling finish. She can definitely win this.
Race 7. (15:07) Eureka Camboya Stud Handicap (0MW) 1200m
8 Always Sacred (Bet Now: $5.00) is a talented galloper that resumes for the Toby Edmonds yard. He can be quite hot and cold at times, but when he is on, he is comfortably up to these, probably better than these. Loved what I have seen from him at the trials and he does go very well fresh. Happy to be in his corner.
11 Rhyme Nor Rhythm (Bet Now: $4.40) is a Lindsay Hatch trained gelding that resumes here. He ran really well in four runs during the Summer/Autumn, ending the prep with a midfield effort on Toowoomba Cup Day behind Tailevent. Unbeaten in three runs fresh and his overall form reads very well for this.
12 Jackpot (Bet Now: $11.00) is a handy type for the Gary Duncan yard who gave them a galloping lesson two back over 1300m at the Gold Coast before coming here where he did a bit too much work in the run and it was a total forgive behind Cornrow. I think with better luck here, he can bounce back hard.
Race 8. (15:47) VCV Brisbane Handicap 1200m
9 Whypeeo (Bet Now: $2.80) comes here with great interest for mine. Toby Edmonds trained youngster who toyed with them on debut at Ballina, winning by a space, running time and Jeff Lloyd made the trip to Ballina to ride the horse. Has a nomination for the Golden Rose, which is a good endorsement for a horse who hadn’t raced, and was nominated for the Rosebud. Keen to see what he does.
10 I Am Impinge (Bet Now: $4.80) is a high quality type for Toby Edmonds who was backed as if unbeatable when debuting during the Coffs Cup Carnival and despite a few hairy moments on the turn, he never looked in trouble and went on to spank them. Comes straight to town in a hot race, but I think he has the upside/brilliance to measure up.
8 Too Easy Bro (Bet Now: $12.00) is a Helen Page trained three year old who spanked them on debut at the Gold Coast in what has turned out to be a decent form race before being freshened and racing over the 1050m here a fortnight back where he did a power of work on speed but kicked clear and looked home, only to be nabbed late by Basara. Should get the 1200m and is one at odds to include in exotics.
Race 9. (16:27) Gollan Racing Handicap (0MW) 1200m
Dartboard job this. Landed with 4 Magnus Cor (Bet Now: $9.00). Handy mare for the O’Dea camp who has been okay in two runs back from a break. Just ran out of puff here two back behind Queenofthepixies before having not much luck next time out behind Khaleesi. Can be hot and cold, but when she is on, she’s up to these.
8 Capetown Hussey (Bet Now: $23.00) is a smart mare that resumes for the O’Dea stable. She ran some really good races during the Summer/Autumn, including a win in town and a placing behind Sheiswhatsheis. Trials have been good and though suited over further, she can sprint well fresh.
11 Bel Selene (Bet Now: $23.00) is a talented mare resuming for the Toby Edmonds yard. She is making her QLD debut after formerly being trained by Gary Portelli where she ran okay but couldn’t quite measure up. Has only had the one trial leading in, which looked quite sharp to the eye at Deagon.
