Racing continues at Rosehill Gardens this Saturday and while there are no feature races, the depth once again looks very strong on paper. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out six metres for the entire circuit.

Race One (12:40) : Schweppes Handicap 1100m:
Back Me: 6 Falconic (Bet Now: $3.20) is a Nicconi youngster trained by Gary Portelli. I am with him based on the fact he had two trials in preparation for his debut in late September/October, and both times he has looked pretty solid. Then freshened up with an eye on qualifying for the Magic Millions and bolted up in a trial last week. Good grounding for his debut so I’m happy to be with him.
Big Danger: 5 Coorg (Bet Now: $1.90) is a well bred colt that debuts for Godolphin and John O’Shea. His lone public appearance came in a trial here last week where he won it and won by a decent margin, plus ran smart time for the morning. Stable have had a fab start to their juvenile assault in the new season and this bloke that looks another that will be winning races. Could well start here.
Long Shot: 8 Terwilliker (Bet Now: $51.00) debuted in the Golden Gift (1100m) here a fortnight back and ran up to his bolters odds when finishing down the track behind Serena Bay, but his final 100m and through the line was solid enough. He has the race experience on his side, draws the soft gate and he is bred in the purple, so I wouldn’t discount him at all here.
Race Two (13:20) : #theraces Plate 1400m:
Back Me: 1 Zumbelina (Bet Now: $1.90) looks the obvious here. She has been outstanding in recent times for Chris Waller, winning three on the bounce and really, on each occasion she has things go against her but she has been too good. Beautifully suited at set weights and 1400m is perfect and again she meets a small field. Bit more depth to it, but I am confident she can get the job done.
Big Danger: 3 Achi Baba (Bet Now: $3.20) was hard in the market when resuming at Beaumont-Newcastle a tick over three weeks back and gee he looked impressive to the eye, winning by over four lengths and running really sharp time on the soft track and the time did rate well for the meeting. Trialled last week to blow the cobwebs and was very good there. Looks the only threat to Zumbelina.
Long Shot: 6 How Sweet It Is (Bet Now: $8.50) rises in grade but she is hard fit and does boast a win over the older horses, which came over the mile on Goulburn Cup Day in a small field where she was heavily in the red and despite looking beat several times down the straight, she fought back to win. Should lead here or get the box seat, and while I doubt she can win, she can definitely fill a place.
Race Three (13:55) : TAB Highway Handicap (Class 2) 1400m:
Back Me: Might only be a Highway but I think 11 Backless (Bet Now: $9.00) is just about a good thing. Looked to trial really well at Canberra prior to debuting at Wagga in a maiden which had a bit of a depth to it and despite sitting wide no cover for the trip, she just powered to the line and was strong in a very impressive win. Her time was sharp and just about better than any of these have done at 1200m. 1400m is no issue, draws well and with the claim, she is only carrying 51kg. Just wins I think. $8 and better is outstanding.
Big Danger: 8 Artistic Beauty (Bet Now: $10.00) is a stablemate of Mar Nero who kicked off her prep with a couple of solid efforts in Highways before going to the Warwick Farm mile where she was a touch disappointing behind Bettabed Red. This looks more her level and O’Hara jumps back on, and she rode the horse a treat first up when narrowly beaten.
Long Shot: 7 Al Cubana (Bet Now: $12.00) was solid in the market when racing in a Highway over 1500m here a fortnight back where he chased hard down the entire straight but was no match for those nearer the speed, who dominated, when fifth to Delightful Feeling. I think back to 1400m suits and now a senior rider takes over, which is when the horse does race best. Sharp improver.
Race Four (14:30) : Electro Mechanical Services Handicap (78) 1400m:
Big Danger: 5 Dixie Chick (Bet Now: $3.60), on face value, was disappointing to some give she didn’t pick up the leader Girl Sunday over this track/distance three weeks ago, albeit beaten a lip. But as the day went on, we realised leaders and horses near the fence were near impossible to beat, so her effort to get as close as she did was very good. Looks ready to win and she gets her chance here for a stable which is in form.
Big Danger: 2 Girl Sunday Bet Now: $3.40) is a Gerald Ryan trained mare who deserves a crack at Blacktype after winning two from two this time in. She kicked off the prep with an all the way win at Warwick Farm, aided by a lovely steer from Andrew Adkins, before coming here where she was somewhat aided by the on speed bias yet still fought off the Stakes performed Dixie Chick to get the job done. Not sure she’ll lead these with ease, but she has shown in the past she can take a sit and still race well.
Long Shot: 6 Heartlings (Bet Now: $8.00) resumed over 1200m here three weeks back and was one of the runs of the day given she was off the pace and had to come wide on the turn, and it was a day where on speed/inside horses dominated and it was very hard to make ground out wide and that was the case for this mare. Should take improvement off that and with no bias and a clear run, she’ll give this a shake.
Race Five (15:05) : TAB Rewards Sprint Handicap (85) 1100m:
Back Me: Not really a race I’m keen to invest money in, but on top for me is 8 Awasita (Bet Now: $9.00). She, like some here, come through the Skellatar on Muswellbrook Cup Day and I thought her effort in defeat was pretty good considering she was three and four wide no cover for the trip on a day where horses were really prominent near the rail and on speed. Draws much better here, tidy second up record and performs well second up.
Big Danger: 3 Voilier (Bet Now: $8.50) is the interesting runner here. He probably has the class to knock this field off but he is such a hard horse to trust, and his record of one win from 14 outings justifies that. In saying that, he has contested some strong races throughout his career and this is one of the easiest. No trials, so fitness levels are unknown, but if he is anywhere near right, he’ll go close.
Long Shot: 4 Kudero (Bet Now: $41.00) is back with Clarry Conners after a mixed stint up north with Barry Lockwood. He ran here four weeks back where he surprisingly led at a strong tempo and faded late about Lunar Rise. He is best ridden with cover and ambushing late and they should go hard in front here, so I think he will get his chance to run on, and looks a silly price.
Race Six (15:45) : ATC Members Christmas Handicap (77) 2000m:
Back Me: 4 Trafalgar (Bet Now: $4.80) is a horse I am keen on here. He ran over 1500m here a fortnight back and really had no right to finish as close as he did given the tempo was set up to suit the leader and eventual winner, and a stablemate in Hogamany, but his final 150m out wide was very good for a horse clearly looking for further, which he gets here. Most of these are just scrubbers and he is the one with the upside and class.
Big Danger: 8 Hunter Jack (Bet Now: $6.00) ran over 1800m here two weeks ago and gee he was gallant in defeat. He did all the donkey work on speed and really had every right to drop out given the other speed horses did yet he kicked and fought, only to be nabbed right on the peg by The Rumour File. Up to 2000m will suit this Tim Martin trained galloper and he is a definite threat.
Long Shot: 1 The Rumour File (Bet Now: $16.00) was completely unwanted in betting when racing here a fortnight ago over 1800m, with some betting agencies having him at around $101. But aided by a strong tempo and a lovely ride from Josh Parr, the galloper weaved his way through the field and surged late to nab Hunter Jack on the line. Can he repeat the dose? I doubt it, but he will only be suited up to 2000m.
Race Seven (16:20) : TAB Handicap (91) 1400m:
Back Me: Going to give 8 Painte (Bet Now: $5.50) another look at a price. He is on the back up after racing last Saturday here over 1200m where he had a soft trip nearer the speed and though he looked to travel well, he just couldn’t quicken with them, but his last 75m was very good. Some of his best efforts have come at the 1400m and he should be hard fit and ready to go here.
Big Danger: 4 Believe Yourself (Bet Now: $5.50) beat home a couple of subsequent winners at a Cranbourne trial before resuming on Ballarat Cup Day where the on speed bias was clearly against her yet despite being a beaten horse 250m out, she stuck to the task really well to be beaten a length by all the way winner Gallant Harmony. Used to be trained here by Gerald Ryan and her lone Rosehill run resulted in a fourth in the 2014 Golden Slipper.
Long Shot: I think the watch horse here is 6 All Cerise (Bet Now: $13.00). I was quite keen on her last prep off the back of some impressive Flemington jump outs but when it came to race day, she was awful. Back in Sydney, and gee I liked the way she trialled recently, sitting back before rounding them up comfortably under no pressure. I could certainly entertain her at a price.
Race Eight (17:00) : Pluck @ Vinery Handicap (78) 1500m:
Back Me: 7 Unbiased (Bet Now: $5.50) looks one of the better bets on the program. He ran over this track/distance a fortnight back and was afforded every chance in the run by Tommy Berry but he just found the eventual leader/winner with the lightweight too tough to get past. Third up now, so he should be ready to show his best, looks a winnable race, has more upside than most…just needs normal luck to take care of these I think.
Big Danger: 13 Kandinsky (Bet Now: $6.00) ran over 1400m here three weeks ago and really, the way he looked to travel in the run it was no betting and when he dashed to the front, that was the case, but he turned it up in the straight and didn’t finish it off when fourth to Choice We Had. He is a quirky horse and hard to trust and follow, but if he puts it all together, he will strongly challenge to win this race.
Long Shot: 1 Gold Ambition (Bet Now: $13.00) was heavily backed to win when resuming over 1400m here two weeks back but after receiving a nice sit just off the speed, he faltered late to finish sixth to Snoppy. That was 1400m, and I think he will only be better suited with the run under the belt and up to 1800m. Drops in depth and you’re getting $12. Great price.
Race Nine (17.00) : Tab.com.au Sprint (78) 1200m:
Back Me: 14 Thelittleracketeer (Bet Now: $11.00) was confidently backed when resuming in a Highway over 1100m here three weeks back where she had the charmed run nearer the tempo and once she got the split, she burst through to win and was quite impressive on the line. Not sure how strong that field was, but credit where credit is due and you go back to her Autumn, she did run well behind a couple of subsequent city performers. Prepared to take the gamble with her.
Big Danger: 10 Sonic Swish (Bet Now: $11.00) had his first run for Chris Waller on Cup Day at Randwick where he produced a brilliant finishing burst from the back to get the job done before racing over over this track/distance three weeks where like most backmarkers that afternoon, he really had no hope, especially out wide, which is quicksand when the track is firm. Convinced he is going well and just needs some luck to be in the finish.
Long Shot: Big watch on 11 What Could Be (Bet Now: $6.50). Above average four year old for Alan Scorse who ran some cracking races during the Winter, notably a fourth at Randwick behind Badajoz. Trialled at Gosford before resuming at Beaumont-Newcastle where he was just far too good for them. Race didn’t look flash on paper so he was entitled to spank them but the time was lethal, something close to two seconds quicker than the other three 1200m races that afternoon. He’s in this for sure if he brings his best.
