Race 1. (11:48) Tab Hcp 1350m
3 Prince Shalaa (Bet Now: $3.00) is unknown at 1350m but is a quality animal for the O’Dea/Hoysted camp. Both starts this time in have come at Eagle Farm, bolting up fresh at the midweeks before going to Saturday grade and running a solid second to Spiritualised. Keen to see how he goes at 1350m.
1 Cocobrew Express (Bet Now: $8.50) has the class factor to prove hard to beat against these. Resumed last Wednesday at the midweeks at Ipswich where I am not sure the track suited him but class came to the fore and he was much too good. Fitter, with good upside, he rates highly.
8 The Missionary (Bet Now: $9.00), I think, will be okay here. She ran second to Cool N Ready a few weeks back over 1350m here where they rode her with a sit and it seemed to work as she found the line nicely. I think if those tactics are maintained here, he is a threat in a winnable race.
Race 2. (12:23) Racecourse Village (Bm90) 2200m
5 Corncrake (Bet Now: $6.50) may want one more but I reckon he’s knocking on the door to win one and this looks a lovely race. Just needed the run fresh behind Raging Bull before a good effort behind Born A King two weeks back. When he was up and running a couple of years ago, he was beating up subsequent Stakes winners, so he’s right in the mix.
1 Barade (Bet Now: $3.20) can bounce back. He got a mile out of his ground in the Gold Coast Cup two weeks ago and was never a winning threat but didn’t mind he finished the race off with the big weight in a good effort. Form prior was strong and confident he can get back into the winners list.
7 Southern Stock (Bet Now: $6.00) is certainly capable with his best. He looked to track up nicely in the Gold Coast Cup but had to make a sustained run and he was a beaten horse 300m out, paddling late. He showed really good promise during the Winter Carnival, so you’d think this is D-Day.
Race 3. (12:58) Eureka Stud (Bm72) 1200m
7 Philly Special (Bet Now: $4.80) looks the map horse. Team Edmonds trains this mare and she deserves a crack at Saturday grade after bolting up on the home deck at the Gold Coast, sitting on speed before being clicked up, taking the lead and she went through the motions like a nice horse. Ideal map, Jimmy Orman aboard, she’ll do me.
1 Ingear (Bet Now: $7.00) is a Tony Gollan trained mare that is second up here and can be dangerous. Resumed at this track/distance where she had the suck run behind the speed and was there to win but couldn’t quite finish it off when third to Miss Divine Em. Fitter, with a touch of class, she commands respect.
8 Self Indulgent (Bet Now: $4.40) was impressive in her lone third up run so she deserves a look. Attempted to lead throughout in the Miss Divine Em race from two weeks back and she gave a sight but just felt the pinch late. Hard fit now and perhaps with a bunny to chase, she’ll be more effective.
Race 4. (13:33) Brc Membership (Bm72) 1200m
9 Birriecart (Bet Now: $2.70) looks the winner if he’s ready to go. O’Dea/Hoysted trained gelding that resumes, having not raced since the 3YO Jewel at the Gold Coast when far from disgraced behind Prince Of Boom. Trial leading in was sharp and he’s 3/3 at the Doomben 1200,, so he’s clearly likeable.
3 Smart Image (Bet Now: $10.00) looks the one to beat I feel. Couple of negative rides to start the prep, the latest being at Eagle Farm two weeks ago when back in a race not run to suit, and while he ran last, the effort had merit given the race shape. Hard fit now, I think this is D-Day.
8 Adonisea (Bet Now: $8.00) looks ready to win for Jack Duncan. Narrow third two back to Dynamic Duo before racing at Eagle Farm again two weeks ago when back in the run but really liked the way he closed his race off when second to Tara Jasmine. 1200m looks ideal, just needs luck from the draw.
Race 5. (14:12) Sky Racing (Rs0mw) 1350m
Very tough race. 12 The Tyler (Bet Now: $12.00) looks the map horse and each way, he’ll do me. Just looked in need of the run fresh at Toowoomba before going to Dalby where he was on speed and fought hard when a narrow second to Rapido Gris. Get good weight relief, the box seat and with upside, he appeals.
8 Caffrey (Bet Now: $4.40) looks to be in for a good prep. Trialled up quite well prior to resuming at this track/distance where he paraded like he would need the run but he actually didn’t do a bad job in defeat behind Sir Rocket in a good effort. Good second up record…may want further, but the return was encouraging.
6 Bean Dancing (Bet Now: $14.00) is a knockout chance. He was good from off the speed two weeks back at Eagle Farm behind Tara Jasmine, working home okay without threatening. The win prior at Toowoomba was dominant and stable is having a good run, so I am not penning him.
Race 6. (14:48) Doomben Mile 1600m
Leaning towards 3 Puntura (Bet Now: $3.20) in a tricky race. This gelding is four weeks between runs since racing over the mile at Eagle Farm where he led and fought on really well, only getting nabbed late by Tokoriki Lad. Gets a 4.5kg weight pull on that horse, a likely soft lead and he’ll be hard to run down.
2 Tumbler Ridge (Bet Now: $6.50) is a pretty good horse when he’s right and he showcased that three weeks ago over 1350m here, spanking them after getting a cheap run on speed. He always looked in control and was much too good for them. If he can hold that, he’ll take beating against these.
4 Sir Barnabus (Bet Now: $26.00) can be an improver. He was solid without threatening two back in the Mackay Cup at 2000m before going to the mile a few weeks ago and it looked a prep run for 2000m next time, so staying at the mile I find interesting, but he is good enough when at his best.
Race 7. (15:27) Rural Aid (Bm75) 1600m
12 Loveplanet (Bet Now: $12.00) deserves another look. He ran a few weeks back at Rosehill and was a total forgive after sitting wide no cover for the trip, a horrible spot to be for the meeting. The run prior behind Yukon was sound at Randwick, and he is a horse who is Saturday class when right.
10 Relucent (Bet Now: $5.50) needs luck from the gate but he’s flying for an in form Paul Shailer camp. He ran in an 1800m Highway at Randwick last time out and worked to the line strongly when second to Sumdeel. Fresh legs back to the mile, he’ll be strong late if he gets luck from the draw.
2 Sneak Preview (Bet Now: $8.50) commands respect. Dominant win from him three weeks back over this track/distance in what looked a strong 80, coming with a well timed run under Thornton to score. Back to 75 looks ideal, and with the claim for the Jones, he gets in really well.
Race 8. (16:07) Spring Carnival On Sale Now 1110m
7 Legal Esprit (Bet Now: $4.20) is an absolute beauty for Donald Baker. He’s a genuine animal that is looking to make it three wins from his last four outings, his latest start being a strong win over 1200m at Eagle Farm two weeks ago when wearing down Matowatakpe to get the win. I reckon 1200m sees him right out so back to 1110m is ideal and he clearly rates highly.
6 Weona Smartone (Bet Now: $2.60) is a David Vandyke trained gelding that resumes. He hasn’t raced since Jan 29 at the Sunny Coast where he was too bad to be true behind Niedorp. Has been given a good break and with two trials to get ready, from a soft gate, I think he’ll only run well.
1 Bandipur (Bet Now: $15.00) commands respect. To say it was a throw at the stumps would be an understatement when it came to last start in the Show County at Randwick but he ran a beauty, sitting on speed and fighting on well when fourth to Showmanship. Hard to beat if he brings that form here.
Race 9. (16:43) Xxxx Hcp (C6) 1200m
Have to be with 12 Manhood (Bet Now: $2.80) for Annabel Neasham in the get out. It was essentially a barrier trial he won last start at the Gold Coast, but he rocketed to the line late from the front, clocking 32.65 for the last 600m. He’s got Stakes class ability and potentially a trip south is on the cards if he wins this, which I think he will.
8 Arentee (Bet Now: $4.60) will need luck from the gate but he’s a horse with really good talent for Chris Meagher that resumes. He resumes after a strong Winter Carnival, which ended with a second to Athelric at Stakes grade. Trial was good…not sure Doomben is his track, but he’ll be winning races this prep.
7 Desert Dreamer (Bet Now: $7.00) to bounce back into the winners list. Both runs this time in have come over 1200m here, winning first up in good fashion before racing a few weeks ago where he had zero luck in the straight and I think with clear air, he wins the race instead of a fourth. Hard fit, he’ll take beating.
