Ten races have been set down for Randwick this Saturday where it is Winter Stakes Day. The weather forecast is for showers, the track is heavy (8) and the rail is out four metres from the 2000m-1600m; Out six metres for the remainder.
Winter Stakes 🏆: View the Field and Odds for the Winter Stakes
Race 1. (11:00) Acy Securities Hcp 1100m
I think 10 Sky Command (Bet Now: $4.60 TOP ODDS) can make it 2/2 to start her career. Met with strong market support at odds when debuting last Wednesday at Warwick Farm and she was a real professional, leading throughout and doing everything right. Tricky draw, but has early toe and will give a bold sight.
A truly run 1100m should suit 4 Dragonstone (Bet Now: $3.90 TOP ODDS). He won the boys division of the 2YO races at the same meeting Sky Command won at. He was strong late and impressive to the line, running quicker overall time. If they overdo it in front, he’ll be strong late.
I want to give 7 Vianello (Bet Now: $7.50 TOP ODDS) another look. Paraded quite big in condition when resuming at Caulfield two weeks ago and with that, she drifted significantly in betting. Had her chance and was far from disgraced in defeat behind Jigsaw, a Stakes class youngster. She’ll improve for the run and is a key chance on her earlier form.
Race 2. (11:35) Ranvet (bm72) 1500m
9 Allinthistogether (Bet Now: $4.00 TOP ODDS) looks a very much progressive filly for Mark Newnham that comes straight to town after spanking them to win the maiden at Gosford, albeit it was a pretty thin and the horse she beat, Kiterro, is limited, but it was a strong effort and she’s in the right camp for a progressive filly over a trip.
3 Go Troppo (Bet Now: $5.50 TOP ODDS) is heading in the right direction for Matty Dunn. He was seven weeks between runs when bolting up over 1400m at Newcastle, coming back from the mile the start prior. The form around is riddled with subsequent winners, so he’s very likeable here.
2 Major Artie (Bet Now: $9.50 TOP ODDS) is the watch horse. Nice type for the WaterBott camp but he didn’t fire a shot at all fresh at Rosehill. He didn’t seem to stretch out from the outset and was quite plain. Had trialled well prior to that and his form from the Summer does read pretty well for this.
Race 3. (12:10) Tab Highway Hcp (c3) 1400m
15 Saintly Sunrise (Bet Now: $34.00 TOP ODDS) is worth a throw at the stumps. Comes through the Zoo Station Highway from a fortnight ago at Rosehill. He was back near last in the run and never really a winning threat but I did like the way he finished his race off. He is a wet tracker and was six weeks between runs, so he’s got improvement.
10 Zoo Station (Bet Now: $9.00 TOP ODDS) is a progressive mare for Gayna Williams who does look a classic case of get the wins on the board early, have a good spell and get ready for the Country Championships. She has won three of five, her latest start being a Highway win at Rosehill two weeks ago in impressive fashion. That was first up, so you’d like to think there is room for improvement.
18 Dream Runner (Bet Now: $5.50 TOP ODDS) has the quality to measure up in a race like this. Resumed in an open handicap at Moruya fresh and didn’t seem to handle the wet track initially when asked but picked up and surged hard late, just missing out on the win. Draws to do no work and will be advantaged if it’s fence in run bias.
Race 4. (12:45) Hyland Race Colours (bm78) 1100m
I’ll take a chance with 3 Misteed (Bet Now: $8.00 TOP ODDS), a former Team Snowden mare that now finds herself with Kim Waugh. This mare has had eight weeks off since running a pretty strong fourth in the Bright Shadow at Doomben during the Winter Carnival behind the Group l performed Outback Barbie. Few gear changes, nice tick over trial and lands in a plum spot from the draw.
7 Van Giz (Bet Now: $2.70 TOP ODDS) is racing really well at the moment for Bjorn Baker. Got a mile out of her ground last Wednesday at Warwick Farm but she closed off her race really well when second to Seleque. Smaller field helps her cause, she’s hard fit and likes wet ground.
6 Dame Kiri (Bet Now: $12.00 TOP ODDS) is an Allan Denham trained mare that resumes. This mare hasn’t raced since Feb 27 when down the track and at the end of her prep when down the track behind Yonkers. She’s a mare who can sprint well fresh and has trialled well leading in, so watch the market.
Race 5. (13:20) Schweppes (bm78) 2000m
8 Our Intrigue (Bet Now: $3.90) is the one with upside and progression. Former Kiwi mare who had her first run for Chris Waller over 1800m at Rosehill two weeks ago and I thought she closed off quite well from the back when fourth to Zing. Has shown good quality when racing in NZ and as a three year old in Queensland, so fitter and up to 2000m, she appeals.
3 Harpo Marx (Bet Now: $2.25) is flying for Bjorn Baker. Whether he needs one more run, not entirely sure, but his two runs back from a break have been outstanding. Ran over 1800m last Saturday at Rosehill and I loved the way he closed off behind Steely, producing the best late splits of the race. Hard fit up to 2000m, he’s a clear threat.
6 Monsieur Sisu (Bet Now: $10.00) will put himself on speed and run an honest race. Just found the set up not to his liking three weeks ago at Rosehill when leading in a truly run race, copping pressure. He tired late and finished down the track behind No Compromise. If he leads and gets control, he’ll take beating.
Race 6. (13:55) Geohex Sprint (bm78) 1100m
Apologies for bringing up the nightmare that was 3 Hulk (Bet Now: $2.10) from two weeks ago. Plain and simple, he should have won. Comfortably. Just had no luck at all in the straight when bolting and by the time he got out, it was race over. He’s flying, bursting to win a race. Gets another chance.
1 Lancaster Bomber (Bet Now: $4.20) is a beauty for Richard Litt. Four weeks between runs since his resumption over 1000m here when back off the speed, a slow speed, but still finished his race off with purpose when third to Malkovich (Hulk second). Tick over trial was a nice piece of work and rarely runs a bad race.
7 Accelerato (Bet Now: $8.00) is a swimmer who is hard fit and in form so he commands respect. He was strong late when winning last time out on the Kenso track, albeit did find the best part of the track. But he’s a wet track specialist and should run an honest race.
Race 7. (14:35) Midway (bm72) 1300m
12 Zorocat (Bet Now: $6.50), in the fair dinkum stakes, has been slaughtered her past two but gee she has run well despite that. Close up behind Nicci’s Fling here before going to Rosehill when leading and run down late by Patino Ruby, who had the suck run behind the speed. If she leads and gets control, she’ll take beating.
4 Royal Banquet (Bet Now: $5.50) is a talented animal for Nathan Doyle that should prove hard to beat in a race like this. Was good late fresh behind Shadow Crush before racing at Rosehill again where the rub of the green didn’t go his way behind Papal Warrior. Back to this sort of level, he appeals.
6 Ashim (Bet Now: $6.50) is a former French galloper for Matty Smith that made his Australian debut over 1300m at Rosehill a few weeks back and stuck to the task pretty well in defeat I thought given he trialled like a donkey prior. Staying at 1300m is the query but he’s got enormous upside.
Race 8. (15:15) Winter Stakes 1400m
6 Rubisaki (Bet Now: $3.50) is a Patrick Payne trained mare who is back on track I feel. Can make a case to say she should have won three weeks back at Flemington. Just had to cut back to the inside, which wasn’t the A1 ground, and had momentum stopped whereas Dice Roll was out in the better ground with full momentum. Hard to beat here back at Randwick with Nash steering.
7 Tricky Gal (Bet Now: $8.50) is bursting to win a Stakes race and she gets another great chance. Loomed to be the case a fortnight back in the Civic but couldn’t quite get past Bandersnatch. She is now third up from a break and should be hard fit, so she gets another golden opportunity.
I want to give 11 Threeood (Bet Now: $23.00) another chance. Joe Pride trained mare that was a real eye catcher fresh in the Helen Coughlan at Eagle Farm. She then was freshened up with eyes towards the Civic but she didn’t fire a shot. Got back in the run and failed to come on;. She’s better than that and deserves another look.
Race 9. (15:55) Heineken (bm88) 1200m
12 Madam Legend (Bet Now: $3.70) on top but not a great deal of confidence. Trialled up like a bomb prior to resuming at Rosehill where she was well supported throughout the day and the bets were landed, finishing best to get the job done. Gets right down in the weights and you’d think has improvement to come.
11 Zakat (Bet Now: $8.50) certainly has the talent under the hood to give this a shake. James Cummings trained gelding that was close up without winning in three runs during the Autumn. Rarely runs a bad race fresh and looked to trial like an absolute bomb at Canterbury, so keen to see how he resumes.
Best version of 13 Handspun (Bet Now: $10.00) is certainly capable. This mare hasn’t really fire a shot in 12 months. Two Summer runs were plain which followed a couple of runs from around this time last year where she did zero. Her best is more than good enough and has trialled well leading in.
Race 10. (16:30) The Agency Real Estate (bm78) 1400m
5 Matowatakpe (Bet Now: $4.60) is flying this time in for Bjorn Baker. Looked a good thing on paper last time out at Warwick Farm and surprisingly he got to $4+ at one stage before being backed in late and despite being off the bit before the turn, he powered to the line and was too good. Now he has a win on the board, he can go on with it.
9 Off Shaw (Bet Now: $3.10) is a wet track specialist who will be likely leading and proving very hard to get past. He ran second in the race mentioned above. He was on speed throughout and looked the winner when Clark pushed the button, but was nabbed late. He’ll be near the front and looking the winner.
2 Ulysses (Bet Now: $6.50) has a good third up record and can be a definite improver here. Ran over 1400m at Rosehill two weeks ago where he didn’t exactly get the rub of the green and was entitled to finish closer behind Mirra Vision. Should land in a plum spot from the draw and is hard fit now.
