The two day Oakbank Carnival concludes on Monday with eight races set down. The weather is fine, the track is soft (5) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.

Race 1. (13:13) Adel. Hills Ins. Brokers Mdn 1100m
13 Roulette Queen (Bet Now:Β $SP.00) on top for me in the opener. Michael Hickmott trained filly that comes here for start two after debuting over 1050m at Balaklava where she got a mile out of his ground but was very good late in the piece when fourth to dominant winner Floral Oasis, producing some of the better late splits of the meeting. Should get decent cover from the gate, a drag into the race and be strong at the end.
9 Fun Forever (Bet Now:Β $SP.00) should appreciate a rise to 1100m. He debuted just over two weeks ago on the Parks track at Morphettville and I thought was a pass mark in defeat in the small field behind impressive winner I Am Unstoppable, who won at Sandown on Saturday in a Stakes race, so the form clearly reads well and the depth here is nowhere near as strong.
8 Even Sharper (Bet Now:Β $SP.00) is a More Than Ready colt for the Macdonald/Gluyas camp that is on debut. He trialled here on March 30 to get familiar with the track and I thought he moved well enough when running a narrow second. Time was nothing flash but he has had a look around the track and that is a big advantage.
Race 2. (13:48) Sugar Finance Services Hcp-C1 1900m
2 Flight Deck (Bet Now:Β $SP.00) is knocking on the door to win again and I think he gets his chance here. He is just over two weeks between runs since racing over 1800m at Murray Bridge where he got back in the run and spotted those in front a decent start but liked the way he found the line when third to a proven Saturday metro horse, Getouttheway. Drops miles in grade/depth here and if he’s within range on the downhill slope, think he’ll round them up and win.
5 Perlubie Beach (Bet Now:Β $SP.00) will jump on the bunny, lead, and run a bold race. He did that in a solid 58 at Strathalbyn over the mile last time and gave a sight but couldn’t quite finish it off and felt the pinch late when fourth to Li’l Hank. The rise to 1900m interests me but if he gets a soft lead, he’ll take running down I am sure in a race lacking depth.
4 Pick Me (Bet Now:Β $SP.00) is a stablemate of Pocket Raider that is capable with his best. He ran in the Getouttheway race mentioned above where he seemingly had his chance, getting the suck run behind the speed and just whacked away to the line. That was his first run in a month so you’d like to think there is good room for improvement. Knockout hope.
Race 3. (14:23) Neutrog Battler's Bolt Mdn 1400m
2 Bywaters Road (Bet Now:Β $SP.00) on top but it’s a nothing maiden. Too bad to be true fresh behind Thirsty Guest at Gawler before having a mini break and racing on the Parks track where he ran a much improved race behind Fiorada Lad, who won here on Saturday, so the form clearly reads well for this and he should just about be at peak fitness.
10 Grey Folly (Bet Now:Β $SP.00) doesn’t have the best of racing patterns but has the potential to settle much closer in the run from the good draw. Good effort two back at Strathalbyn before going to Gawler where he again got back in the run and couldn’t get involved. Livesay rode at Strathalbyn and she is back on here, so I think this mare can be dangerous if the Hickmott horse is off his game.
13 Niskie Latanie (Bet Now:Β $SP.00) can be an improver up in trip with added fitness. He was eight weeks between runs when racing over 1200m at Strathalbyn where she was a bit ring rusty, getting back in the run, and while she was never a threat, I liked the way she found the line. Not sure she is the type of horse you could back to win, but I reckon include her in exotics.
Race 4. (14:58) Coopers Brewery (Bm64) 2900m
1 Smiling Assassin (Bet Now:Β $SP.00) is a proven weight carrier and is the best stayer in the race so I am happy to be in his corner. He ran last Sunday at Gawler over 2100m where he gave them an absolute belting, helped by a good ride from Rochelle Milnes, who had the horse within range on the turn and with his staying prowess, it came to the fore and he gapped them. Has won at 2500m comfortably so 2900m here is fine and the depth is thin.
2 Wolf Prince (Bet Now:Β $SP.00) has to be respected despite the last start. That was the Adelaide Cup where he did too much work to land on speed and was a beaten horse 1000m out, finishing last behind Rebel Racer. Prior efforts were solid enough for a race like this and provided there is petrol left in the tank, he’ll take beating I am sure against these.
7 Finney (Bet Now:Β $SP.00) is a slight query at the trip but likely gets a cheap run on speed. He ran over 2500m at Murray Bridge last start where he seemingly had every run in transit near the speed and was there to win but couldn’t finish it off, tiring late behind Campobasso. If it becomes a sit/sprint, he is suited, so ideally he’d like to find the front and get some level of control.
Race 5. (15:33) Festival Hire Hcp (C2) 1100m
1 Sixfootone (Bet Now:Β $SP.00) looks one of a couple of good things on the program. John Macmillan trained four year old that has been strong in two runs back from a spell, the latest run being over a month ago at Strathalbyn where he was given every chance in the run and tried his guts out but was no match late for Run And Tell. Should be hard fit now and back somewhat in depth, he rates highly.
9 Prance D Dance (Bet Now:Β $SP.00) is first up here for John Croucher. She hasn’t raced since Jan 28 at Morphettville when producing an end of prep run behind Dunmaghlas, getting back in the run and failing to come on. She is a filly who races best on the fresh side and with Neindorf booked, she is certainly likeable against this lot.
4 Celestial Illusion (Bet Now:Β $SP.00) is a David Jolly trained gelding that resumes. He hasn’t raced since September 14 at Balaklava when back in the run and failing to make up any real headway behind Ready Or Bust. He is a horse who can sprint well fresh and thought his trial here last week was a decent piece of work. Likely concedes a start but should be strong at the end.
Race 6. (16:13) Stateliner Hills Com. Cup-Bm60 1050m
Happy to take a chance on 10 Disco Tilmorn (Bet Now:Β $SP.00), a Darryl Dodson trained mare that resumes. This girl last raced on January 12 when an odds on favourite at Penola but failed to fire and was very much on the plain side behind Effortkat, who has measured up at a higher level than this previously. Can’t find a jumpout for her, but she sprints well fresh and can boom home from off the speed when right.
12 Dantree (Bet Now:Β $SP.00) is knocking on the door to win for Andrew Clarken. This mare ran over 900m at Murray Bridge where she got stuck in a bad spot, five wide for the trip, and fought on courageously in defeat when second to Lancelotto. Maps to get a much better run in transit and with the claim for Munro, she does get in really well and appeals.
1 Ranger Frank (Bet Now:Β $SP.00) hasn’t been too bad in three runs back from a spell and rates as one of the knockout chances for me. Runner up in the opening two runs for the prep before going to Mount Gambier where he got a mile out of his ground and was never a factor behind Ornamental Lady. Like him back to the sprint trip and he does drop a fair bit in depth. Can bounce back hard.
Race 7. (16:53) Ray White Mt Barker (Bm54) 1400m
3 Little Rich Boy (Bet Now:Β $SP.00) is worth a throw at the stumps for Grant Young. Game third two back at Strathalbyn before going to Balaklava when wide no cover for the trip and that hard run just told late when down the track behind Master At Arms in a race where they went hard in front, so be forgiving of that effort. Maps to get a much better run in transit and is a proven Saturday performer, something that can’t be said about the vast majority.
5 The Ladies Man (Bet Now:Β $SP.00) has found a purple patch and can maintain. Dominant win two back at a Non TAB meet at Broken Hill before going to Mount Gambier where he attempted to lead throughout and gave a strong kick but couldn’t quite finish it off when a narrow second to Thanasi, who would be odds on against these. Last bit will test but he’ll give a good sight.
6 Fight For Freedom (Bet Now:Β $SP.00) can fill a first four spot. He was specked at a price when resuming at the midweeks at Balaklava where he got back to near last in the run and failed to come on when tailed off last behind Master Of Arms. He has a much better second up record and with his racing style of getting back and running on, that is suited here.
Race 8. (17:33) Magain Real Estate (Bm54) 1400m
1 Chosen Miss (Bet Now:Β $SP.00) will do me in the get out. David Jolly trains this mare, who hasn’t been too far away of late, but she has been contesting much stronger races than this. Latest run came last Saturday at Morphettville where she was wide throughout and that run just told late, finishing a few lengths away from Prairie Fire. Gets in really well after the claim and you look at her form lines, she has a bit on these surely.
9 Belcrest Belle (Bet Now:Β $SP.00) has home track advantage and that is always a big tick when it comes to Oakbank. She attempted to lead throughout at Balaklava last time and she gave a good kick but just found them a bit sharp late, but was far from disgraced in defeat behind Lianne, a proven Saturday metro horse. Think she’ll get a good run in transit and prove to be a leading contender.
5 Just Jazz (Bet Now:Β $SP.00) resumes for John Macmillan. This mare hasn’t raced since December 16 when okay from off the speed without threatening behind Aitch D’Amico. Not the best of fresh records but has trialled up well for her return, including here. Whether she is good enough to beat Chosen Miss, not sure, but a must for exotics.
